Planning the next project.

sueisallaboutquilts 09-18-2011 04:18 AM

I find cutting very relaxing. Same with piecing, if it's all going well :D
I hate binding and basting.

Lavada 09-18-2011 04:18 AM

i love the whole process of quilting i hate not having the time to do it all

mtnmama 09-18-2011 04:27 AM

I love shopping for the fabric, cutting, and piecing. I love putting on the binding because I love the handwork and the fact that the quilt is finished by this time. I dislike the "sandwiching" process. I have tried spray basting, crawling around on the floor, but usually end up using my dining room table and pinning and pinning and pinning! Yuk

pineneedles4 09-18-2011 04:29 AM

I know exactly how you feel! I bought an ironing board cover by I think...Judy Taylor?...it was at Hancocks. But, anyway it is printed with a grid, measuring tape etc. It's ideal for spraying squares and pinning them down with the grid to press and help square up those rascals that tend to want to curve. I buy the old fashioned starch at Walmart that comes in a gallon jug and mix my own starch, a weak starch that I prefer to pray the fabric down with. Once I discovered this method I was so much happier with the results. Then, after pressing, it's a breeze to trim up the square using my various sizes of square rulers from Omigrid. Hope this helps!

I love the whole process - the designing/pickout of a pattern, the choosing of the fabric, then cutting and sewing. What I hate is not having TIME. Or any uninterrupted time. But somehow I complete it. (just not in a timely manner - ha)

quiltbuddy 09-18-2011 05:00 AM

Ironing large pieces of fabric.

Love it all! Each step is a process to the end...

I really gave this some thought. Every stage of a project is enjoyable to me. Except cleaning the sewingroom. Now there's a business for someone to start....sewingroom cleaning. A gal who quilts would be the perfect person to look at a room, understand how you set it up and where things belong and dig in. Where can I hire her???

Rose Bagwell 09-18-2011 05:53 AM

I am the same as you, not so much that I dislike to square up, it's that sometimes, they turn out wonky.

cat-on-a-mac 09-18-2011 05:56 AM

One of my favorite things is trimming off the excess batting and backing after finishing machine quilting. It goes from looking sloppy and ragged to being neat and straight. It's so satisfying!

At that point, you know there's only one more step to go!

I am 100% with you on this one, HSTs. I avoid them like the plague if I can. Since all my work is charity work, it's not a huge problem but once in awhile I like to try it again for myself. I guess I'm just not patient!!

I don't mind cutting the fabric. I enjoy sewing the pieces together and watching it come alive and take the shape that I envisioned.

But I really really dislike squaring up the blocks. I'm making a Friendship Star. It's going to have 42 blocks (I think). Each block has 1 solid square and 8 HST. I detest squaring up those HST's before I sew them all together to form the block. And it's putting a damper on my quilting this weekend. I keep taking breaks. I wish I could hire someone to square my squares!

quiltmau 09-18-2011 06:16 AM

love the design and fabric search-not fond of the actual quilting process. I need to practice and get better at it.

LyndaK 09-18-2011 06:22 AM

I don't like cutting so I bought an Accuquilt Go to help with that. I don't mind pressing, but don't like pre washing and ironing those big pieces of fabric.

I do not, absolutely do not like measuring and putting on borders.

I really really enjoy the machine quilting and the binding. Unfortunately for me, there are more parts of quilting that I dislike than I like. But the parts that I like I enjoy so much I put up with the rest.

I don't like piecing either. It's tedious and repetitive. I am going to be making machine embroidered quilts I think after I get all the projects I have kitted up finished. I find I like that a whole lot more than piecing.

And I'm going to try machine appliqué. I have a feeling that may be something I'll enjoy as well.

Me too. It allows me to be creative in every part of the quilt. When it's done, I have something that is unique.

Wow.. Great website! Thanks for mentioning her.

wuv2quilt 09-18-2011 06:37 AM

I LOVE quilting...who do I want to make something for, picking out the pattern, the fabrics...but, I HATE quilting by myself. I'm self taught...thru online tutes, books, etc. But so far I've not found anyone / or a group to quilt with. I'd like to have a little "in person" interaction. :(

Beth33 09-18-2011 06:38 AM

I love planning projects, don't mind cutting (but need to get myself in a certain frame of mind first), I enjoy sewing. I hate shopping for fabric.

Iraxy 09-18-2011 06:42 AM

I hate doing the bindings. I have about 8 finished quilts that need binding just because I can't get myself motivated to do it. Hope to take a trip this fall with DH and am going to put at least 2 of those quilts that need bindings in the car with me. I figure I can do that while he drives.

hikingquilter 09-18-2011 06:45 AM

I feel your pain. I am currently working on a Carpenter's Wheel and having to square up those HST squares. I thought I would never get to actually sewing some rows together yesterday!

I think I have the answer for you: when I was at the Long Beach show last month I bought some new square-up rulers that work almost like magic! The brand is Bloc_Loc and you can go to www.blocloc.com and see the products. What is special about these rulers is that they have a routed curved line on the underside that locks onto the seam in your block. When you place this ruler on top of your block it feels almost like it's magnetic. Once this ruler is locked in place, you can square up any sides that are "off." I like to use them with my Olfa rotating mat. They come in HST and Flying Geese styles. The rulers are pricey but if you buy sets you save a little. They are well worth it, especially if you get the job done faster and better. (BTW, I am not affiliated with Bloc_Loc in any way.)

I like all parts of quilting, I guess I am strange!

Rose Marie 09-18-2011 07:18 AM

Please watch El Burns demonstrat her triangle square up ruler, it is revolutionary. I like doing HST now, so easy to square up with, get this, ONE cut.

Joanns carries this ruler and with a coupon it goes for $9.00. It is my favorite besides my basic ones.

shnnn 09-18-2011 07:25 AM

I don't hate doing bindings, but I don't love it either. All the fun stuff is done, and it's down to the HAVE to do.

Landers 09-18-2011 07:29 AM

I love patterns, I don't mind the cutting & sewing but I don't want to design my own quilt patterns.

Judi in Ohio 09-18-2011 07:52 AM

If I have to offer up something I don't like about quilting, it would be frog stitching. I hate to RIP out. I'm fussy about my seams and sometimes I cannot get them to match the way I want!!!!
I am a true fabriholic - love, love, love it. Just found Moda Bella solids and love them. Also love sewing machines. Just found Juki's and I'm thrilled I did. So, I am happy with everything I do in the sewing arena - just not the unsewing.

I really like planning and joing the blocks...I don't enjoy cutting/measuring

EagarBeez 09-18-2011 07:58 AM

I love quilting, it's quite relaxing to me. I am a quilter about 6 yrs now. Each quilt I plan and make is a little harder then the first. I am now working on a queen sized log cabin. I love the blocks. I am doing strip, and a lot of squaring up. It's been mentioned here numerous times how easy log cabins are. They are and are not.. It's an easy pattern to make, but, squaring as you go is not

I hear you! I'm finishing up on a baby quilt for a friend and have a pinwheel block in each corner. The first two I did not square up the HST. The 2nd two, I did square up the HST. The first two, my seems and points matched up pretty good. The 2nd two turned out awful, in spite of the extra time taken to square them up!

I think you have got something there! I try to cut accurately and sew with a careful seam, and I just sew it all together without squaring or pressing and it all goes together easily with good points and all!
I only iron it after the top is finished.
( I have a suspicion that "squaring" takes off fabric I need to have there!)

gramquilter2 09-18-2011 08:23 AM

I love everything about the quilting process from the planning, buying fabric, cutting, sewing----binding. The thing I hate is not having a longarm so I can do my own quilting!

scrappy2 09-18-2011 09:08 AM

I dislike picking fabric. I know what I like but getting the right lights, med. & darks is stressfull. Next time I going to get the pks. were that is done for me then all I have to do is get the boarders & backing. I hope someday I can shop stress free.

Love the rest of the process

I love planning, cutting, sewing, binding, hand quilting,
binding. Maybe not so much squaring off everthing but it is necessary I guess, and maybe not always having to do a scant 1/4" seam. It's hard to remember now. When I first started quilting we didn't have to worry.

Pat G 09-18-2011 09:45 AM

I love every step but when it's time to make parts fit for the sandwiching, it's a pain to me. Can't lay it out on the floor or my little 6# Peke plops right in the middle. Move her? She finds another spot. I haven't gotten into buying backing fabrics so I always have to pc. the back.

ShabbyTabby 09-18-2011 11:12 AM

I love piecing the blocks. Hate cutting as it's hard on my back and legs. Can't sandwich on the floor (artificial knees and one hip) but sewing it together and finishing are no problem. I think what I love most though is buying the fabrics! I would probably have to live another 50 years to quilt what I already have but can't resist looking and looking always leads to buying....LOL

Glenda m 09-18-2011 12:27 PM

Basting, but maybe thats because I don't have a place to lay it all out. But as long as my family keeps having children, I won't have to worry about a larger quilt for a while. LOL

Beachbound 09-18-2011 12:40 PM

I love finding just the right fabric for the pattern. I would never even consider a kit~ would even take it apart & use the fabric a different projects if I was given one, lol. I hate making "that first cut" after the first slice, I'm okay. I very worse part for me is making the sandwich. I crawl on the carpeted floor & never get as smooth a fit as I would like.
