What do you stay away from?

Got to thinking today (dangerous I know) about the designers I don't like because their patterns are so confusing to me. Or the fabric designers with all the large wild bright prints. Ladies that will only purchase from brick and mortar stores because they can't feel the fabric they view online. Those of us who prefer not to shop garage sales because of smells etc.
Or those ladies who only shop certain online stores. Does this hit home with anyone besides me? Not wanting to bash anyone or any place, just wondering.....

Onebyone 06-26-2022 11:52 AM

There are one of each of those ladies you listed at my guild. LOL I'm the one that doesn't like certain designers because I think their quilt designs are tedious to make.

sewingpup 06-26-2022 11:57 AM

I have some designers that making one of their quilts is enough for me. For a number of various reasons, directions too hard to understand, patterns requiring special techniques that are tedious, patterns that are mainly for wall hangings especially in a larger size. think square or round quilts. What am I supposed to do with those in a small house?

Tartan 06-26-2022 11:59 AM

I don’t really follow trends in fabric. I have favourites but I don’t really discount any designers because there is usually something in their fabric lines I can use.

bearisgray 06-26-2022 12:47 PM

I love sewing bargains at yard/garage sales. I have never noticed or been bothered by "smells."

As far as the fabric being "clean" - think about how many people have probably touched the fabric in a brick and mortar store.

Besides, I soak and wash my fabrics before cutting them now, anyway.

I will not bring anything that smells like mothballs home, though.

quiltsfor 06-26-2022 12:58 PM

I've come to the conclusion that I need to stay away from online quilting shops! Ohhhhhhh shiney! I need to stop buying! I want to use up stash and stop buying 'new' rulers. Just got another one today, after watching a youtube video at Missouri Quilting!

I'm going to limit myself from here on out! I am..... really!

SusieQOH 06-26-2022 01:20 PM

Your first sentence about thinking made me laugh!!! :)
I don't like garage sales/thrift shops so if they have bargains I don't get them and that's okay with me.
The fabrics I stay away from for the most part are directional prints because no matter how hard I've tried I get the pieces wrong when assembling blocks.

Julienm1 06-26-2022 01:48 PM

I sew primarily for Project Linus w/a focus on boy quilts. Older, younger. I like to look at fabric on line especially precuts but I've noticed almost all the precuts have lots of floral fab...not what I want for boys. So I shop my stash for the free table at our meeting.
I really don't like the large bold fab of K. Fassett (sp). Just too loud for me no matter how small I cut it.

If I can be so bold...donations accepted for PL quilts. My chapter donated 300 quilts who were displaced this summer due to the wild fires so we are sewing fast and furiously to replenish our quilts.

toverly 06-26-2022 02:44 PM

I stay far far away from Civil War reproduction fabrics and sewing with black fabric. Love history but hate the dark colors.

ThreadHead 06-26-2022 03:36 PM

I'm with you. I hate working with dark browns and black colors. I know it's because I can't see that well.
I have glasses all over my sewing room, and lights that are so bright that it will knock your eyes out. lol

Railroadersbrat 06-26-2022 05:15 PM

Very bright colors. Because of my headache disorder, neon or near neon colors tend to bring up a nasty migraine, so I have to steer clear of those. I actually can't use any of the MSQC rulers or templates because the migraines I get from them are exceptional. That said, as far as designers are concerned, I stay as far away from Tula Pink as I can, which seriously depresses me because she has fabulous fabric lines, they're positively gorgeous, but there's no way I can work with her fabrics.

I'm not picky about where I get my fabric, if it's something that I like, naturally I'll comparison shop and try to find the best price for it. But if I'm lucky enough to go to a thrift store or garage sale and they have fabric and it's something that I like, I pick it up. The way I see it, our hobby is an expensive one to have, so any cost cutting measures I can take, I'll take them.

Reader1 06-26-2022 05:37 PM

I stay away from scrappy quilts. I really like a lot of them when I see patterns or completed quilts that friends do, but I just can't make myself be comfortable not trying to match all the fabrics up. I think I am a little OCD.
I also have never, and probably will never make a quilt with Y seams. I have watched several videos but think they must be way too difficult.

Quiltah Mama 06-26-2022 05:52 PM

I have never been drawn to civil war/reproduction fabric. I tend to think of my sewing/quilting style as more modern style.
I have tried to like scrappy quilting, scraps to me translate to $, but after a few scrappy blocks/quilts, I finally had to admit, I was not enjoying the process. So I now offer up scraps on here or donate to the local thrift shop.

Stitchnripper 06-26-2022 07:05 PM

Too funny. My first thought from the topic was Snakes! My phobia. As far as quilting - I guess I don’t do much appliqué.

SueZQ from MN 06-26-2022 07:48 PM

I have to admit I don't care for Kaffe Fassett fabric either. I have seen some beautiful things made with it, but for me, the colors and prints are just too busy and bold. I don't buy digital prints as I don't like the texture of them. I will buy "previously owned" fabrics but only after I have sniffed them out or questioned their origins as I am very sensitive to odors.

quiltingcandy 06-26-2022 08:06 PM

I don't know much about manufactures or designers because I either like something or I don't. If a pattern is too complicated I probably will not complete it. So I may buy the pattern if I really like it, but hold off buying the fabric until I test it out. I really like the color green but it really takes a toll on me, and end up avoiding it as a dominant color in a quilt.

zennia 06-27-2022 04:16 AM

I cannot do scrappy quilts. Wish I could I would use a lot more of my stash. I like the patterns that look complicated but are not.

SuzSLO 06-27-2022 05:23 AM

I have a hard time with the idea that I need to go out and buy a lot of fabric to make a quilt, particularly a mystery quilt. When I saw the supplies needed for the Summer Mystery Quilt from Laundry Basket Quilts (fabrics and 1 background, total 10 yards), I balked. I like to use my stash and just buy a little fabric at a time to fill in the missing parts. I think it is probably like fooling yourself that snacking means fewer calories consumed than big meals.

GingerK 06-27-2022 07:02 AM

Another Kaffe Fassett hater here. Especially when all those crazy prints are put together with no place for my eyes to rest. Tula Pink is also pretty low on my 'like' list. I do mostly scrappies because I am usually working with donated fabric. I love optical illusion type patterns and simple patterns that look monstrously hard--like 9 patch and pinwheels. The secondary pattern fools your eyes.

SusieQOH 06-27-2022 07:12 AM

I like Kaffe Fassett but never know how to incorporate them into anything. My KF fabrics are just sitting on a shelf. I don't care for Tula fabrics for the most part but I do find them interesting.

joe'smom 06-27-2022 07:26 AM

I can't relate to Tula Pink fabrics. Not that I question her brilliance as a designer, but my brain just freezes up when I try to think how I would use her fabrics (other than buying a kit, of course).

Chasing Hawk 06-27-2022 07:36 AM

I try to stay away from plaids and stripes. Worked with so many plaids and stripes when I was upholstering. I do have a few of those prints in my stash I use them in places you can't see, like pillow inserts. When I need a few hot pads for the counters or potholders I will use those prints..

bj 06-27-2022 08:36 AM

I get a little frustrated trying to use precuts with pinked edges. I love that they offer such a nice variety of fabrics though. So I do buy them occasionally.

petthefabric 06-27-2022 10:40 AM

Got quite a few chuckles. Moving required very selective packing. Finally made some definite decisions about what I wanted to work with. Someone else can love and enjoy machine computerized embroidery. ‘No’ is a complete sentence. Been there, done that, had the stash to prove it.

Yesterday, one more UFO finished and clutter reduced. Today, plan to finish another and more clutter gone. Look’s good. Only 1 crate with UFO’s. Then I will stay current. Like having a credit card and paying today for what I wanted yesterday.

So, what am I avoiding? Temptation to do what other’s love. That’s great for them. For me? I’ll be my unique me.

Anniedeb 06-27-2022 03:02 PM

I honestly don't pay a lot of attention to designer names. I see something I like, and go in search of it. I do know that I like deep earthy colors, rust, sage green, brown hues, and everything autumn colored. Just finished a quilt top that is beautiful metallics which I've not been fond of before.Loud, modern, abstract is not my wheelhouse. I love civil war, but not 30's.Love applique, but not piecing small strips, or squares. I've ordered online, but not very often. I love to touch, feel and pet the fabric. I love stopping at any LQS that I see. Have never stopped for fabric at a garage/estate sale, or thrift store. My BFF and I do shop each other's stash, and she often will buy me fabric that she "knows" I will love. I'm visiting her next week, and will be going to Sisters, Oregon, so planning on some purchases out there and will be shipping those home.

quiltedsunshine 06-27-2022 03:29 PM

I just love it all! I like the challenge of a difficult pattern. I like bright, wild prints -- especially Kaffe! I like Civil War and 30's repos! I want to put a stripe or plaid in every quilt. Scrappy is great, but so is a classic 2-color quilt! I love a lot of fabric designers! My favorites are probably William Morris and Robin Pickins.

copycat 06-28-2022 02:11 AM

I stay away from:
Quilt patterns that require a lot of tiny pieces to create 1 block. My reason is my time is limited with working full time.
I also like less piecing in a quilt so I don't have to deal with so many seams when I quilt on my domestic machine.

Mkotch 06-28-2022 02:40 AM

I don't like to watch You Tube videos and would rather read directions either online or in a book (I'm a retired librarian!).

I like the look of KFassett and TPink fabrics but don't buy them. Perhaps they're a little intimidating to me - can't figure out how to incorporate them with the scraps I already have.

I avoid making patterns that require me to make the same segments or blocks over and over again - prefer samplers or medallions. I lose interest after making just a few blocks, thus creating more UFOs.

This so much! I find quilting over a four way seam not my cup of tea, especially if it is repeated all over the same block.

A stellar example of the differences in quilters "taste". :) I love the Civil War reproduction prints both the darker color pallet and the lighter shirting and dress prints on light backgrounds. But CW does not dominate my quilting efforts. I stay away from modern colors, specifically gray, and patterns that have strong geometric patterns. The many patterns dominated by a "billion" little pieces don't catch my interest or needle. That said, I admire the quilts that use a modern palette and the work put into the quilts is admirable with all of those little pieces, I just choose not to make them.

Good question that made me think and consider what I avoid and what draws my eye and interest.

bkay 06-28-2022 04:27 AM

No question - I hate making half square triangles. I have a stack of 3" trimmed HSTs and another 1" stack of untrimmed HSTs I started with the late DH's shirts (he passed 2 years ago). I only have another million to go. It's like you already made them and now you have to do it all over again when you start trimming. D9P strikes me the same way. When I make a D9P pattern, I make the sashed blocks instead of cutting up the 9 patch.

Civil War repros. I do not like dark, muddy colors and they don't go with my decor. That said, I have seen some beautiful quilts made with these fabrics. They are just not me. Although I love her bright colors, I avoid Tula Pink. I find her prints rather bizarre. To each her own.

Karamarie 06-28-2022 07:17 AM

I try to stay away from people who always seem so negative about things.

MaryKa 06-28-2022 08:24 AM

Well as for my tastes--I like most everything except when the price out weighs the person doing the sewing. I can Not get myself to pay more than $6/yard and many times I can get it less from the stash pile at the senior center when I get the vibes to go check out the pile. We do a take some/leave some but once every week (Thursdays usually) I go and get what is left over as on Friday it is tossed into the dumpster or it gets to be too much. The group meets on Wednesday so they have already picked it over. This time I found Pink Elephants on flannel. I liked it but am not certain what I will be doing with it. It can sit im my ???? box for a while. I use the fabric that is large enough for girls clothing (5, 6, 6x, 7, & 8) No zippers used. I like to use buttons in the front so the girls can do it themselves. Then I make 18-inch doll clothes and give the packs to my church and Salvation Army to be given with the dolls. Once I've done those 2 things with the fabric everything left goes into my stash piles for doing quilts. These are given to the homeless shelters around the area. I was homeless for 3 years as Momma was confined to a nursing home and we lost our home (and all my everything I couldn't fit in my van.) Still I sewed by basting everything together and took those items to the local high school for the kids to learn how to sew at the first of the year. The only rule was they gave everything to the one homeless shelter and kept nothing. I have received a call from the teacher asking for more items for this next year. It will be her last and she wants to give the good feeling to the kids this year as well. I told her to come pick up their load. I had already finished what I planned to give the school.

One thing I don't take is the fabric that looks like it should be used for furniture. I have a lot of upholestery fabric but haven't found anyone to get it to. God will provide the right person to get it soon. Sooner would be nice as it is taking up space.

sewbizgirl 06-28-2022 09:01 AM

What a great thread!

I stay away from tiny hexagons that have to be hand connected (EPP?). Also anything with repeating spikey points like New York Beauty style. To me it's no beauty. And I stay away from machine embroidery like the plague. I just don't care for the look of it, especially on quilts. I do love beautiful hand embroidery tho, and I'm working on a state birds and flowers quilt now, from old Aunt Martha transfers.

Love the colors in Kaffe and Tula fabrcs, but they are hard to work with because they are mostly all "mediums" in value. All mediums offers no contrast, unless you contrast them with solid black (or white). Kaffe has come out with some pastels now, which you can use for contrast with his brights.

L'il Chickadee 06-29-2022 07:27 AM

My husband is always teasing me by looking over my shoulder and saying "Oh, lots of spikey things!" Men.

I don't know what I walk away from. Maybe repetitive boring stuff. Really gaudy fabric. But I don't consider Kaffe Fassett as gaudy. Maybe his newer collections lack the sophistication of earlier ones. Pocka dots and button images...maybe he's lost interest?

Excellent comment!!

bearisgray 06-29-2022 09:05 AM

Some days it is my husband. He used to be an over-the-road truckdriver - now he is full-time at home retired.

Although there may be days he would like to have the house to himself, too. Fortunately, when push comes to shove, he can go to the garage or I can go to the basement.

Peckish 06-29-2022 09:22 AM

Hmmm interesting question, hadn't really thought about this til now.... apparently I'm not fond of brown, because recently I needed some for a project and I discovered that my very well-endowed stash was lacking. 😁

I have 2 quilting friends who avoid certain things - one will not do applique. The other refuses to touch anything she thinks looks too hard. I like to be challenged, so I will always attempt things that other people won't. However, there is one pattern I bought that scares me! It's Judy Niemeyer's "Vintage Rose" pattern, and the only reason it scares me is because a third friend, who is an excellent quilter with 50 years quilting experience, made it and had sooooo much trouble with it!

Someday.... 😬😜

AngelaS 06-29-2022 04:27 PM

I avoid patterns that were written for one particular fabric line or that require a certain template. Am I going to love it enough nake it worth investing in an expensive ruler to make the pattern?

civil war fabric aren’t my style.

and appliqué isn’t my thing.

but give me all the bright colors and scraps and I’m a happy girl. :)
