I say do it! If you have that much high quality fabric in your stash, and an inclination to buy more, now seems a good time to sell some of the older choices. You might consider offering one or two choices. I like the idea of flat rate boxes but the postage alone on that would be over $10, plus the price of the fabric. You could offer a 1 lb. envelope for a lower price. Anyway, good idea and I would be your first customer as I love LQS quality surprises!

quiltingranny 10-12-2010 06:08 AM

I would definitely be interested in a "surprise package". Could you do something in all naturals like white on white, creams and tans? Of course I love large florals too! Reds, purples, blues and on and on. Please pm me when you've got it figured out. I'm definitely in.

Our local quilt shop has wonderful quality fabric on sale as low as $2.80 a yard AND she even has a website. Here's the web address: https://www.quiltsrjewels.com/store/]https://www.quiltsrjewels.com/store/[/url]

I really think pictures are a must when buying fabric.
I want to see what I am buying. With the digital cameras it only takes a few minutes to layout a stack of fabric and take a picture. And I want to know the yardage as well.
Think of this as a "fun" project, you get to play with your fabric!
Instead of as a chore.

Dani 10-12-2010 07:51 AM

Could you weigh how much fabric you can get in the flat rate box and then figure out how much fabric that is....so they would know closely how much fabric they are getting. And know that you are including only LQS quality fabric. I think that would be great! Dani

Aunt Retta 10-12-2010 07:59 AM

It would be fun to get the surprise if the boxes weren't too expensive so I would not loose out too much if I couldn't use a piecs or two.

LovinMySoldier 10-12-2010 08:26 AM

I say do the surprise boxes. You are getting enough responses that I would go for it. then whatever doesn't sell you can go ahead and take pictures of

KaterTot 10-12-2010 08:52 AM

you *are* going to lose no matter how you sell it. I've wanted to sell my stuff that I'm no longer into, and realized that I'd probably get 1/4 for it. Had to accept that and re-focus my mind that I'd have "X number of dollars for new fabric that I *would* use." My husband isn't so easily re-focused!

Olivia's Grammy 10-12-2010 09:05 AM

Just my 2cents. I like to see and feel my fabric. Sometimes LQS fabric is not always the best at a high price. I like to see how much a fabric will ravel.

amokcanuck 10-12-2010 09:51 AM

Being canadian, I know you have bags that seal, they hold 12-15 meters of material and cost very little to post. This might be an option for you to look into instead of the more costly boxes.
If you go this route, I would be very interested, but not with the boxes.

Everything here costs a lot to post unless it it media mail.

PM me when you're ready to start clearing out and come up with a price and an approximation of yardage.

Same here.
I'm starting to collect scraps for a couple of crumb quilts.

jprusky 10-12-2010 11:09 AM

I wouldn't buy fabric without seeing a picture first. Just my thought anyway.

lgc 10-12-2010 12:23 PM

Depending on the price, I could be talked into a box/package of "warm" colored fabrics sight unseen.

ree-nee 10-12-2010 12:40 PM

Great idea! I have been wanting to get my hands on some of your stash since you announced the reduction. Please just fill one up with various florals for me and let me know when you are ready for me to pay.

brendadawg 10-12-2010 12:57 PM

Maybe you could do it by weight, but still in a one-rate box or envelope. That's what the online store does on the "scrap" bags, even though the pieces are certainly not scraps. I'm not a purist quilter, so I'd be excited to buy a package unseen. Kinda like the lottery (LOL). Just my 2 cents worth.

createquilt 10-12-2010 01:18 PM

what part of ohio you from? Maybe the quilters from the charity groups would like to buy a great deal of material.

createquilt 10-12-2010 01:22 PM

I would also be interested in a surprize box of flowered material and pinks for little girls quilts. PM when you know the price.

desertrose 10-12-2010 02:23 PM

When you are posting your ad perhaps you could show a sample array of the fabric in one or two boxes, tell what colors arrays you have and tell interested buyers to contact you for any questions they have about the specific colors they're interested in. This way you wouldn't have to post all the colors initally. Once people see the color samples in the posted pics they should have an idea as to the quality and quantity you're offering for the price, per box or lb,you decide to charge.

Good luck down sizing...Andie

carolaug 10-12-2010 03:31 PM

isn't there a flat rate box with the post office...does not go by weight.

I agree but I am thinking a large amount will fit into the flat rate boxes and it wouldn't be 4.00 per yard. I know I would take a loss on the fabric but want to clear it out quick and am willing to do so.

Here is what I do on eBay

I stand the fabrics up sideways in the box and take one picture. Then I put the fabric on the bathroom scale and tell how many pounds it is. For cotton fabric, 4 yards is about a pound. This is acceptable for a bargain box. The picture shows the colors/prints and the weight gives an approximate yardage. If you want a better price, you will need to measure it.

There are documented bad experiences on eBay, but I don't think that kind of issue will come up with the quilters on this board. We are all willing to help you.....we get fabric!!!!

Okay, I tried filling a large flat rate box and it is 10 pounds. So, according to your figures that would be maybe 40 yards? What would be considered a good price to you for this? 100% cotton, LQS quality.

That will be high. For $2 a yard, the fabric would be $80 and the shipping another $14.95. And I don't know if that is enough money for you per yard. $3 per yard would be $120 plus shipping.

Why don't you try 20-25 yards in the medium box which would take it down to around $40-$50 plus $10.95 shipping? (If you want $3 per yard, it will be higher) You would get more takers.

hawaiilove 10-12-2010 03:46 PM

I wouldn't buy fabric sight unseen - if you want to clear out all of your stash you will probably have to take pictures for the majority of the board members - I'm not speaking for the members in general but think that is what most of us would like.

Thanks Katie for understanding my request.

I completely agree with you !!! :-)

I think this is a great idea and if I'm not too late I'd be interested in buying fabric sight unseen if I have some control over what I'm getting. I'm looking for rainbow colored fabrics to go with a pattern I'm collecting for to make a rainbow colored quilt. Also, I'm looking for background fabrics, white on white, cream, and black. PM me if you have anything like these you want to stuff in a box for one flat price. Not too much tho, because funds is an issue. Thanks!!!!

Hi katied772, have been seeing your ideas on selling your fabrics. When you decide what sizes and prices for surprise boxes, please pm me. I esp. like brights, florals, calicos, about the only thing I don't care too much for is large prints. Thanks!

I'm near Canton. Thinking about having a two day sale from my home, advertise on Craig's list and contact some quilt guilds. Anyone have good contact info. for Ohio Guilds? Tried to contact some at one time and received no reply, so don't know if they got the emails or not.

I think I emailed you back in July when I first was thinking about selling. See my post just above about a possible sale at my home. Maybe you could come and save on shipping.

PJO 10-12-2010 04:12 PM

I think that's a great idea.

maryquartapella 10-12-2010 04:20 PM

Our Guild had a fabric sale and some of the ladies put fabric in a box and had a look see sale. I bought quite a lot and really was very pleased with my purchases. In fact 2 other ladies and myself split the cost. A real bargain.

annette1952 10-12-2010 04:45 PM

I would be interested too when you are ready with the prices & the shipping. I would be interested in Fall colors, Civil War fabrics, tone on tone white & beige. Also asst colors of marbled. Please let me know! Thanks

KarenBarnes 10-12-2010 05:14 PM

I like surprises! It's like Christmas or a birthday! I would buy sight unseen as long as I knew that it was reputable fabric.

quiltingbea 10-12-2010 05:56 PM

I would like novelty fabrics, if you have any of them. Either boy or girl.

mburdell 10-12-2010 06:09 PM

I would be interested when you are ready. I am looking for pale pinks, blues, greens floral prints (think shabby chic) and white on white.

lasews 10-12-2010 06:20 PM

This is a good idea I think as long as you're specific about the contents & the amount that's in there. Please check your private messages when you have time.

I think you can get 5 yards in a flat rate box

I am finding 20-24 yards fits into a med. flat rate. I've got these listed at 50.00 which comes to 2.08-2.50 per yard depending on the yardage. Haven't checked the flat rate envelope but they are awfully flat and don't seem to expand much. I've been able to get 11 fat quarters in a small flat rate box but have to squeeze it tight and tape.

jitkaau 10-12-2010 07:39 PM

I sold sequined material this way - had heaps of boxes - left overs from stage productions. They went like hot cakes. The value was about 30% off retail price as the fabric was donated to us by the producers and it was a school fund - raiser. I think you would have to make it an attractive price, but don't give it away. Personally, I would not sort out all the colours as every quilt or project looks better with a variety, and it will be less work for you.
Another way would be to tie them into attractive colour packs as they do in quilt shops, with tape tied around the bundle. That way, everyone can see what they are getting before making a purchase. If you are really clever, you could make up a few jelly rolls or charm packs to display the material. It will look more attractive if you have a market stall.

pc1camp 10-12-2010 07:50 PM

I sent a flt rate box from PA last week and you would be amazed what you can get in it if it is rolled. I bet I had10-12 yards plus 3 large like 10-12" squares --cake squares maybe. so watch out and do not charge too little. These are beautiful MODA for 3.95 yards or so.

Peggy

pc1camp 10-12-2010 07:55 PM

I can't imagine having a LQS that has fabric for $.00 yard. I checked with mine last week before going to PA(haven't been there in awhile) and they had gone up to $11.95. They can keep it for that. That is here in Houston, too. Most of the other ones are $9.25 to $10.25. That is why it is so much fun to go to Amish country.

Let me know when you are ready. I think a surprise box would be fun. Kinda like Christmas or my birthday, except I am sure to love the gift! I collect B&W, Florals, and Pinks & Greens.

Yes, I vaguely remember talking to you about it back then. I'd be interested and a penny saved on postage is a penny I can spend on fabric. Just let me know when. I don't check Craigslist often, but I will try to be more frequent if that's where you're advertising. PM me your address when you're ready and I will come by. Also, a good way to give everyone on here a first hand second opinion as to what you have and that could always help boost sales.
