What do you think?

These aren't ideal viewing conditions but what do you think of this granite-like fabric as sashing for my funny lotteria card blocks? I sort of like it but I don't trust myself!

tezell0801 06-21-2013 09:36 AM

Well, since you asked I will be honest, I don't care for it. I think something more colorful in the colors in the blocks would look nicer. Something red, blue, yellow or green. Love the blocks too!

Sarah in Brooklyn 06-21-2013 09:39 AM

Thanks. My initial thought was going with something dark that would pick up a color in the blocks. I just came across this and wondered....I appreciate your honesty!

Look great! If it looks good to you then it is good! I took classes a few years back from Freddy Moran. She is all about color and not do much about quilting. One thing she taught that I have done many times, and probably more than I should have, is to use something that gives your a rest between colorful blocks. In her quilts I noticed she used lots of black and white. I have used lots of black and white polka dots to break up the colors. Last year I made a Dios deLos Muertos quilt. Very colorful fabric broken up with the polka dots. Wish I had kept a picture of it.

quilt addict 06-21-2013 09:51 AM

I am not familiar with that line and if they have different colorways. I think it tones down your nice card blocks. I think I agree with trying to find something either brighter or very dark neutral.

Tartan 06-21-2013 09:52 AM

I like the swirly granite fabric! It picks up the blue and white well and anything brighter I think would over shadow the blocks.

Sarah in Brooklyn 06-21-2013 09:53 AM

It's a good idea to use something restful to balance out the color. I'm going to play around with that.

I think I would use a green the color in one of the blocks. Just my opinion. Your quilt do as you like.

I agree with Tartan. This fabric seems perfect as the background fabric.

gale 06-21-2013 10:57 AM

The fabric looks like a totally different style to me. The print in the blocks is very distinct. The marble-y fabric is more subtle.

HillCountryGal 06-21-2013 11:09 AM

The fabric you have for the sashing is fine... however, I'd add that blue/turquoise color too. Maybe "frame" your squares in that color, then add the granite looking fabric.

MaryAnnMc 06-21-2013 11:17 AM

Oh, I'm terrible at this. I'm about to post a similar question! But here's my 2¢: The blocks have a modern, wonky feel to them. The colors are clear and nearly primary, whereas the marble fabric is muddy and indistinct. It doesn't play well with the blue geometric fabric. If it were me, I'd keep looking. That fabric will change the whole feel of the quilt. Having said that, maybe that's what you're after! If so, I'll just take my pins and go home. :p

This is what I think. Match the "feel" of the blocks.

Sarah in Brooklyn 06-21-2013 12:27 PM

Yeah, I'm leaning toward something more geometric or another batik. I love all these responses. It really makes me think!

DogHouseMom 06-21-2013 12:33 PM

I think you're close ... the colors are just a smidge off, and the organic feel of the mottle doens't play well with the abstract art work.

Here's a couple you might consider

Oooh ... I think this one would be awesome with your blocks. Perhaps a slightly larger white border, then this print with a wonky mitered corner.

Those are amazing! Thanks so much!

Personally, I like it - wouldn't like a real busy print between your blocks.

cmw0829 06-21-2013 03:55 PM

Love your blocks but agree that the fabric proposed for the sashing is distracting.

JustAbitCrazy 06-22-2013 03:07 AM

To me, it's not the right fabric.

QuiltnNan 06-22-2013 04:19 AM

i'm with tezell... the two styles are just too different for my taste.

jetayre 06-22-2013 04:48 AM

Like the material fine - just not a lot of it. Putting a medium band width around the blocks would work without overwhelming them. Just my thoughts.

tessagin 06-22-2013 04:57 AM

I'm not crazy about the granite. Maybe use it for the backside of the quilt.

Citigirl12020 06-23-2013 03:03 AM

Not a fan, is that Stonehenge? Some form of a black I think would look nice

piepatch 06-23-2013 04:52 AM

Sorry, but I think I would search for another fabric for the sashing. The colorful blocks are from a different "family" than the granite fabric. I love the granite fabric, and I love the blocks, but not together. I hope you will show us the finished product, because it will surely be a winner!

mom-6 06-23-2013 05:00 AM

Ok I'm going to go against the flow here and say I love the fabric as sashing. I wouldn't have it very wide - no more than 2"- but I think it picks up the colors and still makes you look at the cards.

DJinSC 06-23-2013 05:03 AM

The colors are perfect! I think with the white sashing separating the blocks from the background, it's all good.

Steady Stiching 06-23-2013 05:07 AM

I agree....the styles of the two fabrics don't compilment each other. I'd try and find a fabric that pics up the rust(red) color in the cartoon block and sash with tha, then perhaps a black border that matches those dots in the yellow fabric.

Annie68 06-23-2013 05:27 AM

Keep the granite fabric, it's perfect for what you are doing!

justflyingin 06-23-2013 05:38 AM

I agree that the styles of fabrics don't work/play well together.

cpcarolyn 06-23-2013 05:59 AM

I like it. Great blocks.

jbj137 06-23-2013 06:19 AM

I like it.

Friday1961 06-23-2013 06:41 AM

The colors are right but somehow the fabric is not.....now that you asked. ;) The pictures are pretty busy so I think I'd go with a solid, perhaps one that matches that yellow with the dots....or maybe the green/blue behind it.

wishfulthinking 06-23-2013 06:44 AM

I think it works & looks good! Not sure though, if the style of fabric is right for the blocks. That being said, I think it's best to go with your first reaction so if you love it, do it!

AZ Jane 06-23-2013 06:58 AM

I love it. Blends very well with the funny lotteria card blocks. Now, just don't ask my opinion of the funny lotteria card blocks! LOL!!!

I agree with piepatch - the blocks are colorful and I would look for something that makes them pop! Perhaps a turquoise, red, or black? I think you need a good contrast between the white and the sashing. Look for a color or pattern that picks up those in the blocks. You will know when you have the right combo :) Please post your final selection.

IMHO This is what I would do too. :) It is what you like that counts!

roserips 06-23-2013 07:45 AM

After looking at others responses I guess I am the odd ball but my first reaction was GREAT! The muted colors add texture and put the emphasis on your blocks which are great the two in the middle look like they have been folded open and I would try to continue that in your rows. You have a very interesting quilt going and I look forward to seeing it finished with however you decide. I guess I like the unusual and unpredictable.

Rose Bagwell 06-23-2013 08:35 AM

I love the blocks, where did you buy the lotteria blocks ? I sure would love to make my sister one as she is always play this game back home in Texas.

As for your color scheme, ( background fabric ) I myself love it, however, you might do a narrow border around each block in a dark solid color.

FroggyinTexas 06-23-2013 10:41 AM

I don't know why that granite doesn't go, but I just don't think it does. If I were doing this, I would find find a red like the one each of the characters is wearing. The fabric you are auditioning will be terrific in some other quilt sometime. froggyintexas

Latrinka 06-23-2013 11:02 AM

I think it's perfect!
