I just finished my DNP scrappy quilt. It was a lot of cutting, sewing, cutting, sewing, but so fascinating to watch the final blocks come together. It was really fun to do. I think that because there is so much color to it, and so many seams, I would like to tie it. It is for my studio couch. I tied one quilt with embroidery floss, but know some people use yarn, cotton perle, other? What do you like to use? Thanks.

I have used both embrodiery thread and pearl cotton. I think I prefer the pearl cotton to work with.

Floss and yarn

perle cotton.

Perle cotton.

Another vote for Perle Cotton.

Perle Cotton. I would use embroidery floss but my friend swipes it to finish off fleece throws with or my daughter to make friendship bracelets. They don't seem to like the perle cotton unless my friend is making wash cloths--then she prefers the white or natural color & just sniffs at my pastels and variegateds--LOL. I don't like plain white anything so I never buy that, even in embroidery floss.

I use yarn. That's what my DGM used when I was a child and the quilts are still holding together.

Thank you for asking this question, Shamrock. I want to tie my Daughter's Bday quilt she asked me to make for her. I was wondering what everyone thinks holds up the best too?
|
Floss or yarn mostly
|
Perle Cotton for me, too. I make the tie part on the back, and the front just shows a little x where I cross it over before I tie.

The only quilts that I have tied have been for little girls and I used very narrow ribbon which I double knotted, then tied in a small bow. It really added an extra feminine touch and they loved them. I spaced the bows so that they would enhance the pattern of the quilt...either in the center of a block or at the intersection of corners of blocks or block sections.

I usually use floss.

Perle cotton, too. I'm doing a country style bed quilt that way now.

I have a full size quilt, hand pieced and tied that was made in 1912 and it was tied with yarn and is still holding together.

I use worsted weight yarn. My daughters have the quilts my mother made them 26 years ago using this method and they are still together, but the flannel is wearing a little thin.

perle cotton for me too. lets see pics you know we love to see them

Thanks for asking this question.I'd like to tie a sofa throw, because it'll be used a lot & also because of LA cost.
What kind of tie/knot is best? I also love the ribbon ties idea for a girls quilt. Thanks all for sharing.

I use crochet thread if it's to be something for "year round". If it's a winter only or Christmas only type throw then I like to use yarn. The yarn gives it a more "I'm warm" look.

I use floss because quilts that I tie are scrappy, and I use a color of floss that matches each "scrap" You can hardly see the ties that way. I have LOTS of floss!
|
humbird, what kind of knot do you prefer using? Thanks for the color idea
|
If having the knot on the top, how long do you leave the tails?

I use yarn, square knot, leave the ends about 1 - 1 1/2 inches long.
|
Thanks to all who posted in this thread.Have learned from it & will try tying a small wall hanging 1st.

I will post my picure tomorrow, then make the big decision. You people have been a real help, so much information!
|
yarn or crochet or cotton, I have never used floss. Some of my best memories are tying quilts.
|
I prefer the pearl cotton. It is easy to tie and doesn't fray. congrats on the quilt, sounds lovely
|
#3 Perle Cotton would work best. I love the ribbon idea. I have a red, white, and blue top my Mother made of poly knit material. I'm going to tie it and may try the ribbon. Wonder if I could find a red, white, blue ribbon???
|
I think I use Perle Cotton--is that the crochet thread? That's what I use. It comes in lots of colors. I've used it for decades, and it really holds up.
|
I've used embroidery floss, square knots, and left the ties about an inch long. After repeated washings the knots untied and the floss came out.
If you use ribbon... the cut edges will shred, so you'd have to use fray-check or something similar. |
Am I right in thinking that later if I want too, I could snip out the ties and machine quilt the project?
|
I use fine crochet cotton. I can usually get partially used up balls at the thrift shop in all kinds of colors. It is great for that Japanese style of quilting with big stitches to make a pattern, I can't spell the name but it sounds like "shashico". I also put a dot of fabric glue on each knot to keep it strong.

Thanks for asking this question, I was wondering too what to use.
