My next project will be a "10 minute block" quilt and I need to know an easy, simple, etc. way of quilting one. I've just started out on quilting so no free motion just yet, lol. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Deb did a great one http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-81908-1.htm Enjoy. :P

Welcome to the board from Southern California!!
That's a good tut.I watched a video on youtube on how to make the squares but my question is after making the blanket. Once I have all the blocks made, how would one quilt the blanket? For instance, "stitch-n-the-ditch"?
Thanks Gayle! :)
I looked at the quilt directions and since I am still a beginner, I am having trouble understanding this. Umm, is it on u-tube now? thanks.

Surely someone knows how to quilt one of these blankets? Lol.
I did look over the pictures and then I get confused when it goes down each one. I am a little slow at times, sorry.
Butterjoy, here's a video on how to make the squares. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbTHlGGKMPM

I understand that, I sometimes have a problem with pictures too. I'm still trying to figure out how to quilt the blanket once I have all the squares together.... I guess I'll have to improvise once I get there....

Your welcome! Your welcome to share pics of your finished products here if you want. I welcome ideas. :D
I had a problem machine quilting one. The center piece was left loose and I kept catching it. I finally sewed it down with a decorative stitch. There was no sashing, so I just did a meander in the main part of the blocks letting the quilting continue from one block to the next. I did a loopy flower in the center block. I had problems with this area also because the block wasn't pressed really flat. You need to make sure your blocks are pressed as flat as possible, especially in that center intersection.
LOL, didn't mean to say "welcome" so many times, lol.

I have done a simple stipple/meander stitch and it looks good....thread color will depend on it you have printed fabric or just solid colors.....I didn't want too much of a quilting design to take away from the quilt itself....I am a "less is more" kind of girl
I've done 2 of these now and loved the look but they were a little challenging to quilt. The most helpful thing was using a walking foot. I did the first without it and it made a huge difference the second time. I just do straight stitching, haven't moved up to FMQ yet so not that skilled a quilter (skilled seamstress though). If you look at my posting history, I've labeled both posts and you can see my examples.

You might stitch the middle square of each block down like the cathedral window and make bigger diamond shapes around that, so the window stands out.

Forgive this next question but has anyone ever made a blanket using the 10 minute blocks and just tied embroidery floss in the corners? I'm not sure how that would look  but could that be a possibility instead of quilting it? Lol. If not, then I like the idea of stitching the middle square. :-D |
I consider myself a newbie, but I tye most of my quilts, using the Decatur Knot..you can search for it under quilting knots, I have the pages and can PM them to you if you want to see how it looks...my page says tying by Caroline Reardon....I love this knot...you can hide it if done with thread or show it if done with yarn...does real good in corners...

I have done about 10 of these for charity quilts and edge stitch the middle block down and free motion around it. You could edge stitch the middle block and stitch in the ditch or sew diagonal lines through the all the blocks quilt edge to quilt edge. Good luck.

I have quilted 2--both on the diagonal, but in different spots. One was from the center seam in each block to the next center seam, etc. The other i just missed the center little block. Both worked well.

I made one as a charity quilt...as you can see from the quilting, I'm not too great (LOL) at FMQing.
What I did was, quilt in the ditch and around the block in the middle, then I quilted a square on point between the center block and the edge of the block. Easy & quick. Only straight lines.
I have a KS one I started but haven't sewen together yet. I experimented with QAYG on one block and I think I'll do that. I just did SITD on the bigger squares and a decorative stitch around the center. Since it's too big the try to quilt on my Brother and have it LAQ is too expensive I think this will work out OK.
I just finished all the blocks for the 10 minute block. I think I will do a QAYG but I'm still not sure how I will quilt it!
I am the worlds worst for quilting ideas...as I was looking at the u-tube video it looks like she used feathers, feathered circles...it really depends on what look you're going for...sorry I couldn't be of more help...post it when you are finished..would love to see what you decide to do...

Stitch in straight lines a half inch inside the seams - around the inside of each of the four pieces of fabric the block is made of. You can use tape as a guide, and this avoids sewing the extra thickness of any of the seams.
Works for both hand sewing and machine sewing. It is a simple easy echo quilting. |
