I don't remember how old I was, but it was by hand - a denim jacket for my cabbage patch doll.

The first thing I ever made was an A line dress. I was about 14 and in Home Ec. The following year I made a powder blue pleated skirt. After that I was good to go to make my mini skirts :-)

My Mom taught me some hand embroidery techniques when I was in grade school. Took a sewing class in high school - first thing I made was a skirt & matching top. Sewed clothes for my daughter when she was a baby & toddler. After that I sewed sporadically until I got into quilting. I love all handwork - knit and needlepoint.

The first thing I ever sewed was a T-Shirt quilt with Fleece two years ago so I can't remember how old I am...  I was about ready to give up until I found this board :)

Doll clothes with scrapes my Mom gave me ,and neddle and thread. Then on to 4H ,a skirt and tea towel. My firts machine was a treadle. :-D
|
I am so jealous by how many of you had or have a treadle! I'd love to have one but don't have the room for a carton of milk much less another machine.

We had home ec. in Jr. High School. Had to make a dress. Let's just say, it was less than perfect.
|
i was 9 , and i made barbie clothes. :D
|
When I was six or seven my mom taught me to sew by hand, and my first project was a little doll, looked kind of like a gingerbread man, just two pieces of fabric stitched together around the edges (raw edges left on the outside), buttons for eyes. I loved that doll, until I went to a summer camp and another little girl had a preemie cabbage patch. She made fun of my doll.

I have to laugh at how many of you started by making doll clothes. Not that doll clothes are funny, but I didn't care if my dolls were naked or in rags etc. Luckily I wasn't that careless with my children.
