quiltlady37 11-09-2010 10:21 PM

I was told by a woman from Winterset(that is where Liz and Mary Ann have their shop)that they had sold out to Keepsake Quilting and that Liz was moving to Texas. She had asked Liz if it bothered her to leave the show. She said if it bothers me I just look at my bank account from the sale and then I am okay with it. This woman said she knew them both very well. I don't know if this is true or not.

cmclaren7 11-10-2010 03:02 PM

Both of them have been at this for many, many years. I would not be surprised if a retirement was happening. It was the way it happened that is bothersome. I just cannot believe that Liz Porter would have walked away for money or grandchildren or anything else without saying goodbye to her fans if things had been going well. They obviously were not.
I'm happy that she is happy...if that is the case.

quilterguy27 11-10-2010 04:24 PM

With all this chatter about Liz Porter now you have my curiosity peaked. I was all content thinking she was happy down in Texas. Now I don't know what to believe. It does sound fiesable now that she left under unfavorable circumstances. I enjoyed watching their program and am not too thrilled with the new format, but I'm going to give it a chance. I hope we find out what really happened soon. Curiosity is getting the best of me.

cmclaren7 11-10-2010 10:23 PM

I believe Liz is too much of a lady to engage in a public display. I don't think we'll ever see that and I don't personally want to. I do want to see better quality quilting shows. Liz was a wonderful teacher and I will miss her.
Whatever happend to Simply Quilts. I just loved that show. It was always interesting and very different from the other shows (some of which are a bit plodding for me).

Laura3 11-11-2010 03:59 AM

I also miss Simply Quilts!! Anyone know where it went?

reader 0129 11-11-2010 04:10 AM

I saw one of the earlier programs this fall. They just said that she wanted to spend more time with grandkids.
Implied she was only getting out of the TV part of the business.

quilter on the eastern edge 11-11-2010 05:11 AM

Their TV show used to be on at 9:00 am here and then it was suddenly moved to 2:30 pm. The 9 o'clock show was on at a good time for me but I hardly ever see it now. The few shows I was able to catch at the new time were repeats.

I don't mind the daughter - maybe they are trying to attract a younger audience - a new generation of quilters.

quilterguy27 11-11-2010 10:21 AM

Simply Quilts went off the air a couple of years ago. You can find Alex Anderson hosting a new show these days online. Check it out: TheQuiltShow.com

Donna P 11-11-2010 05:23 PM

Yes...sheis taking some time off to spend with her grandchildren. From what they said she will return.

Wondering if Mary (daughter) is for the purpose of luring the younger generations into quilting.

That would be good though (luring the younger generation). I never watched the show but I just found it on my TV so I'm going to watch it.

jdiane318 02-23-2011 10:22 AM

Liz has another love called 'knitting' and she has been working on some patterns and magazine showcasing her talents there, too.

blossom808 02-23-2011 10:28 AM

Mary said her daughter will be with her in this series. the 1600 hundred series. Thats all I know.

I recently purchased a babylock machine and the saleslady told me this also.

Rann 02-23-2011 10:29 AM

I read that Liz retired.

B Jane 02-24-2011 01:30 AM

They have said that Liz is retired - or semi-retired so she can spend time with the grandkids. I think I read that she has moved or is spending part of her time in Texas.
I think Mary is trying to appeal to new quilters.

redmadder 02-24-2011 03:23 AM

Simply Quilts went off the air because the ^%$&%$# at HGTV decided we all wanted to see more shopping for homes, selling homes, improving the back yard, etc. Kinda like WM getting rid of fabric so they can sell more makeup.

If the daughter lures more youngsters into quilting, that's great! Wouldn't their decisions be different if the CEOs of WM and HGTV had loved a quilt as a child?

Melinda in Tulsa 02-24-2011 05:53 AM

At least F & P is still on the air! What are we going to do for quilting shows when all these ladies retire if we don't have new blood coming in.

Julie in NM 02-24-2011 06:05 AM

Alex Anderson and Ricky Timm now have there own show on the internet but must JOIN in order to view their segments. I too really miss Simply Quilts. Saw it every morining and was a great way to start my day.

Only show I watch now is Eleanor. Noticed she's updating her techniques and incorporating precut fab. Last Sat she was using jelly rolls!

We no longer get F&P and only saw a couple shows with the daughter and not impressed at all. Sometimes change is good and sometimes things should be left alone.

erinsluck 03-21-2011 08:36 AM

I really dislike the daughter. She just turns me completely off. Because I am a beginning quilter I will continue to watch but they sure messed up. I liked the Bernina sponsorship. I love my Bernina. My dealer had both Bernina and Babylock and for me there was no choice but Bernina for a number of reasons. I had a lot of trouble with made in China, Taiwan with a D1 years back and I was determined never to deal with that again. Don't most of the sewing machine companies make similar attachments

BellaBoo 03-21-2011 08:54 AM

My way of thinking is Hey they have a tv quilt show and I don't so I'm watching it. I wouldn't want to make a tv show with my DD so kuddos to both of them for the effort.

ckcowl 03-21-2011 10:05 AM

POOR LIZ...she retired over a year ago...just wants to do other things with her family
seems like every week...for something like 60+weeks now someone gets all UP IN ARMS over it...What happened to Liz???...
she is enjoying her life! she does not have to work any more!!!
give the woman a break she paid her dues and deserves time for herself.

quilter1943 03-21-2011 10:46 AM

I think Liz is editing the knitting magazine. Check out Fons and Porter Love of Knitting.

quilter1943 03-21-2011 10:47 AM

Just read a post that must have come in right before mine. Guess she's not editing the knitting magazine. . . . .

Liz wants to spend more time with her family. I give her a lot of credit by putting family first! I'm pretty sure her grandchildren are quite young and she is cherishing these times. Good for her!

capemay 03-24-2011 05:21 PM

Bernina quit sponsoring F&P a couple times. When I last saw them Babylock was sponsoring them. I now just started seeing them on BYU and BabyLock is sponsoring them again.

Bernina is well known for dropping shows. They were the first to sponsor the Martha Pullen show, then dropped it. Then when I started watching quilt shows on PBS I purchased my first Bernina because they sponored it. Now they must have dropped it too. So, my next machine will be a babylock because they at least pay to put the machine on the air.

I so agree with you! This thread has gone on forever (since last June). It is amazing it keeps coming up over and over again.

klawrence37 04-15-2011 02:49 PM

I have wondered the same thing. What happened to Liz. I'm also disappointed to see their not sponsoring Bernina. I have a Bernina and think it's a perfect machine. The daughter is friendly enough but just not Liz. KGIRL

masmipa 04-16-2011 08:22 AM

i was at the International Quilt Festival in Cincinnati last week.... one of the people there told me that Liz is ill and that is the reason she has not been on the show recently..... hope she recovers soon and returns.... wish her well... and miss her on the show. Mary does not fill her shoes!

dabbler312 04-16-2011 08:30 AM

I was watching the local PBS pledge program and Marianne said that Liz had retired and that her daughter Mary would be stepping up and filling in that spot. I think she does a wonderful job. People seem a little reserved with change - I welcome it for it offers a different perspective. I will continue to watch FP Love of Quilting.

quilter1943 04-16-2011 08:54 AM

I have heard that, but haven't looked for the magazine.

I can understand so many years on the road and working, that a little time off could be a nice thing. I hope Liz is just off having some fun time. I'm thankful for all Fons & Porter have done for the quilting world. Their quilting book is the standard I use when ever I have questions.

Julie in NM 04-16-2011 12:30 PM

done with this

IreneCM 05-31-2011 01:33 PM

Ok, so she retired to be with her grandchildren. I don't begrudge her that - but I would have loved to hear it from her lips, that's all. Just watched another episode with the daughter and almost fell asleep. In case you read this Liz Porter, we love you, we miss you and we wish you the very best!

MelodyWB 05-31-2011 02:04 PM

That's what I heard too..it happened quickly,,I live where we get them on PBS on Wed..suffered through 4 shows with the daughter..just not the same!!

cny_sewer39 05-31-2011 05:27 PM

Liz Porter has retired and moved to Austin, Texas. She was a speaker at a quilt guild meeting ours in April(Wildflower Quilt Guild). I was able to meet her in person & get her autograph. She had said that she retired when they sold the Fons & Porter franchise in 2006. They told Liz & Marianne that they had to work for 3 years (I believe)after the sale. She was so nice. She is the first famous person that I have ever met.

They have been doing this too long for the abrupt off the cuff remark made by Marianne Fons by way of introducing her daughter.
Of course we all welcome new quilters. However, I am not interested in watching a show hosted by one. I want to watch experts and learn from them.
I am very upset that Eleanor Burns and Liz Porter are not going to be helping me along with my quilting. To tell you the truth, Marianne Fons never did.

Very well stated.....and I agree on all points.

Now that's a perspective I hadn't thought of!

tyoung 05-31-2011 06:33 PM

When the daughter first appeared on that show, Marianne said Liz was not going to be on the show now. Liz wanted to spend more time with her family and grandchildren.

I did like the show better when Liz was on it. It definately has changed since she's been gone.

beckalou 05-31-2011 06:46 PM

Liz Porter is a wonderful person. I had the pleasure of taking a few classes taught by her many years ago through a quilt guild in Iowa. She is an awesome teacher with a great sense of humor. I think it's great that she is taking time off to spend with her family, heaven knows she deserves it! I am not all that pleased with the new format of the show either, but still watch it and learn something new every episode.
