What the heck were these meant to be?
2 Attachment(s)
I bought these pieces, 17 of them, at an estate sale months ago. Just dug them out and they were totally nasty, stored in a garage for decades. I washed them in Borax and pressed them, and this is what I got. They are all the same shape, narrowly hemmed on 3 sides by hand. What were they supposed to be? Please dont tell me these were Sunbonnet Sue dresses.... YUCK. I will not be making a sunbonnet sue quilt. Worse come to worse I can cut as big a triangle from them and do whatever I want with them. But first I wanted to float the question in case someone recognizes the shape and can tell me what quilt they were cut for. (I'm afraid it might be Sunbonnet Sue... :hunf: ).
I love the fabrics. Some are feedsacks but some also look like late 50's, early 60's, so that's probably when these were cut. I want to make some sort of small wall hanging just to be able to look at the prints. Thanks! |
Looks like Sue to me. Beautiful fabrics!
Looks like Sunbonnet Sue to me also. You could re-cut them into wedges and do a grandmother's fan.
I hate to be the second bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure those are SBS dresses. That's why they are only hemmed on three sides, and the notch in the top is where her elbow covers that area. Doesn't mean that's what you have to do with them. You could overlap them, arranging them them into a circle and applique a center over all. Maybe you could overlap them into an "S" shape. Play with them.
I suppose you can arrange them sort of like a Dresden plate or a fan, or flower petals. Doesn't matter that the shapes are not symmetrical. Make 3 groupings of six. Find a fabric to cover the notched centers. Then appliqué the 3 units onto a white background. The units don't have to be lined up vertically or horizontally, just some kind of artful and modern way.
yep, SBS. sorry that you don'e want to do one of them.
Yep, SBS. Since the bottom edge is turned, I would get out a degree ruler and see if I could get 2 blades cut from each. I would sew them into a circle and applique the turned edge unto a background square and applique a center circle.
Sue dresses. But you could be politically correct and put Sam in them.
If you don't want to do SBS -
they kind of made me think of bell-type flowers or desk lamp shades. |

Yes, they look like Sunbonnet Sue dresses. But the Sunbonnet Sue quilt I made had much prettier dresses:) They flowed:) |

Some good ideas, friends! Thank you. I'm really liking the Grandmother's Fan idea. Might make a great small wall hanging.
The thing I can't stand about SBS is the big stupid hat in lieu of a face! It's always bugged me, like a cheap way out to depict a person without a face. I don't like faceless Amish dolls either. The "person" is in the face. Yes, I can tend to overthink things! |
Sewbizgirl - I'm with you on the SBS quilt, although I do have a SBS book that I've tried to pass along to quilting friends to no avail. It's yours if you change your mind :o)
Sorry but, I love Sunbonnet Sue. I love her bonnet and a face would not look good on her. Faces would and are hard to make for us people that can't make them. I would be lucky to have them.

My 1st thought would be to try to sell, then I thought - HEARTS... Would be soooo cute cut in hearts & appliqued to light background block...
It is great to start your day off with a laugh! So funny! lol I really like the Sunbonnet Sue quilts but I have never made one. I have a couple books & several single patterns too but seems there is just so many others that get in the way. Someday though!
I think you would get the most out of the fabric by cutting wedges. You should be able to get 3 per dress. Please post a pic of what you decide to use them for.
Oh man had to laugh. There are many people who aren't fond of sunbonnet sue. I happen to be part of that group. My daughter in law is an old soul. Loves sun bonnet sue. Has asked me to make 2 !! Yikes! What is one to say when it's for my 2 darling grand daughters.

Sewbizgirl, I am with you abut Sun Bonnet Sue. The only SBS I even look at are the "How many ways to kill Sun Bonnet Sue". Now that is inspiring!!!
Because you are appliquéing them, you could lay these out in a curved way, switching directions across the quilt top (like a chevron). Because they are stitched on the edges, you could even overlap them a bit to make them fit whatever you decide. Hope I don't miss it when you post the finished quilt. :-) |

I don't care for Sun Bonnet Sue or Sam but I have no idea why. Have fun with your creativity!
Yep, SBS to me also. I would use them in a dresden or a fan quilt.

I also don't care for Grandmother's Flower Garden. Guess we all have our faves and least faves. I think I'll try the wedges and make some Grandmother's Fan blocks. It won't be a whole quilt. I'll be lucky to be able to make a half dozen blocks, or maybe just four! |
They are pretty fabrics! Good luck using them!!
I am like you when it comes to Sue, lol. That being said, I am afraid I agree with others that these were meant to be her dresses. I really like the suggestion of cutting them into wedges for a fan pattern. You could also use them cut in half for the petals of a flower/flowers in a wall hanging.
I agree they are SBS dresses, they do make cute quilt blocks
What about keeping them as dresses, but cutting them across the top, putting straps on them, and making them into dresses hanging on a clothesline?
I'm with you on not caring for SBS much or Amish dolls. I like faces! |
zozee, I like this idea. You could also do the "clothes line" in a Z like the pennat(sp) pattern I have seen.
I too am not overly fond of sbs, but have to say the Abbey Road block I made is an exception, that one I really liked.
Hm, Overall Sam as a cross-dresser. Now there's a new idea. lol
I have made more than 1 5 It's the most favourite quilt I'm ASK for.some people call them Dutch dolls.but they mean Sun BONNET .Sue.I have made three this yr., ANd two parasol girls'with 18in blocks. Me too! Never thought of them as SBS', Kass... LOL.

Could they be the main part of a pieced tulip block, with different soft solids in the center?
hugs, Charlotte |
I;ll take them!!! I would love to make a SBS quilt.
