Seems like every week I logon and see a thread titled "what I did this weekend" and it shows an entire quilt (or more!) started and finished in a weekend.

Every time I look at these "weekend" projects I think ... how?

You want to know what *I* accomplished over this whole 3 day weekend?

20" of binding hand sewn to the back the quilt.

BUT ... my stitches are really really tiny :)

When I finish the other 100+ inches and get the label sewn on I'll post a pic of "what I've been doing since FEBRUARY".

How do some of you work so quickly?? I'm humbled.

quilt addict 09-06-2011 11:29 AM

Don't worry as we all have different speeds. It is great you are almost half way to finish your binding.

I never have anything to post that I did on the weekend.

feline fanatic 09-06-2011 11:32 AM

I so hear you on this! I thought I worked at a reasonable pace but not when I see what some here whip out! I managed to get half of one border hand quilted this weekend. So I handquilted 8" x 45" of quilt.

In my defense I also went to my local farm co-op, picked half bushel of tomatoes which I put up 5 quarts of sauce , 24 Poblano chilis of which I turned into chili rellanos for the freezer, 5 eggplants which became a huge dish of eggplant parm, 2 quarts of pole beans, blanched and in the freezer. And I wonder why I am so dog tired after these long weekends!

Flying_V_Goddess 09-06-2011 11:34 AM

I'm kind of curious of that myself. If I'm not procrastinating and getting something done it takes me a while. It took me about a week to cut out the clover parts for a Winding Ways quilt I'm working on. And I was bringing the fabric into work and cutting them out during my breaks and spent at least 3 hours every night after work. Took another two days just to cut the leftover fabric into strips for the piano key border. Took another hour or so to straighten, iron, and cut one of the background fabrics into strips. Don't get me started on how long it took to give all those fabrics a Retayne bath. And I haven't made a single stitch yet!

So I want to know how anyne can get a quilt done in a weekend. What's your secret?

Hattie Frances 09-06-2011 11:40 AM

It took me all of yesterday and until I went to bed to cut and sew together (16) 14 1/2 x 16 1/2 with the first border around it. I was so proud. Now will I ever Finish it.

lee_stitches 09-06-2011 11:42 AM

I am certainly envious of those that produce so many beautiful projects in such a short period of time. (If I knew how to put that little green with envy face here I would) lol! I will never be able to contribute to the "what I did this weekend" topic like them. Kudos to you ladies and gents!!!!!

Gramie bj 09-06-2011 11:44 AM

Don't ask me! It takes me days just to get fabric cut and start piecing. If I'm real lucky and the pattern is really simple I maybe can get a top done in a week, more like 2 weeks. All this after I have washed an Ironed fabric, changed my mind about a gazillion times on color placement in quilt. Shoped my stash, and made at least one trip to LQS for just that one extra color I know I just have to have only to get home and discover I really do like the color I fount in my stash a lot better. LOL

I think they are just finishing up something they've been working on for weeks or months. So it looks like they did it in one weekend.

When I finally get into a finishing mood, I'll be posting 10-20 tops that will get done in 1 weekend. Because I have most of the square done it's just a matter of getting my behind in gear and putting them together...but I have to finish studying. So it won't be any time soon.

Stitchnripper 09-06-2011 12:54 PM

I think I have self diagnosed ADD when it comes to quilting. I get so easily distracted. Get the fabric out, take a break. Iron, take a break, fold to cut, take a break. I don't get much done, but, that's the way it is.

wuv2quilt 09-06-2011 01:17 PM

I'm with you sister...I can't figure out how to make time for it all.

jljack 09-06-2011 01:39 PM

I am known by my friends as "Speed Quilter". I work very fast, and sometimes I get things done much faster than I would even guess. But everyone has their own speed. I hand sewed the binding on a 99x105 quilt in about 5 hours. That's over 400" of binding, stitches about 1/8" apart. I have a system.

Mariposa 09-06-2011 01:53 PM

Wish I'd have gotten more sewing done over the weekend. Family is good at distractions! But I am tackling some UFO's and getting some LA-ing done! :)

Me too! Me too! Imagine how little we would get done if we worked together! :!:

Wow! We would be three times nonproductive. Now I am distracted by words with friends and hanging with friends.

Diannia 09-06-2011 02:05 PM

The only thing quilting related I got done was to finish 2 name badges for the quilt guild I just joined. On the other hand I spent 1 day with my DDIL's and 3 DGD's (ages 6 and 4) starting to make a Fairy House. I can quilt when these girls are teens and don't want to spend time at Nana's. Gotta make memories and enjoy them while I can.

I suspect the majority of people on these boards are similar to you. Some are super achievers, perhaps have neat sewing rooms where they can leave everything out. I am constantly putting things away in other rooms. Then I have to drag it back out. I spend most of my quilting time getting out or putting away my machines, and tools, etc. So you are not alone, plus I don't seem to get any quilting done in the summer/warm weather. Add in husbands, children, ageing parents and poor health-so I estimate I finish one large (queen or king) size quilt a year, plus odd donation sewing, kids quilts and wallhangings. Some people are able to sew from morning till late at night-they get quilts made quickly. Don't worry if you don't get alot done-there are lots of us who are the same way.
Just enjoy doing what you can and don't compare yourself to anyone else. This is supposed to be fun!!!

I'm a ditherer. I stare and stare at the fabric and pattern before I cut it. then I make several blocks, one ata time, to see what the most efficient way for me to put them together. Usually after this I get pretty productive, but it takes me a while to get to that point. I'm also very careful about my seam allowance and which way to press. I like a really flat quilt top!

SharBear 09-06-2011 04:49 PM

"I am what I am and that's all that I am" ---and that is fast enough for me ... If it's good enough for Popeye it's good enough for me!

looks like I'm getting about 1 throw size top pieced a month.

Jingle 09-06-2011 05:27 PM

I do lots of things on regular weekends and long weekends. I have tried make a quilt in a weekend (I have a book with several in it) and still can't do it. I think it is impossible, at least for me.

QUILTNMO 09-06-2011 06:01 PM

just like quilt in a day sometimes it takes me a day or more just to cut it out

kwhite 09-06-2011 06:02 PM

Quilting is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the ride!

Dolphyngyrl 09-07-2011 03:54 AM

I think some sew for hours here. I just don't have that kind of attention span to dedicate maybe an hour, 2 at the most if I'm really motivated

pocoellie 09-07-2011 04:44 AM

Don't feel alone, I don't complete anything in a weekend. LOL

merchjag 09-07-2011 04:58 AM

I'm on board too. I have a friend(retired) who can whip out a beautiful quilt in days.I have been working on a memory quilt for 2 months and still don't have it done. In my defense-I work 3 days a week, clean up after and cook for 2 grown men(son and DH) have been running DH to multiple doctors appointments and darn -people are having babies and weddings and birthdays and I keep getting invited and ya know I can't say sorry I can't come. HaHA Oh well !

cjaye44 09-07-2011 05:04 AM

I seem to have just one speed these days...SLOW :hunf: :hunf:

sguillot 09-07-2011 05:08 AM

Now that's what I call a productive week-end. I love doing stuff like that. I'm embarrassed to say I spent the better part of the week-end trying to sew a block of the month block that I totally messed up. I went to the quilt shop twice to get more fabric that I messed up and still didn't get it right. I don't know what happened that I just couldn't get it right. The bad part is that it was only half square triangles and I could do those in my sleep but not this time.

Have any of you made the 1600 mile quilt? I think it would be a quick and fun project to so. Let's all challenge each other to do one and post it except that I don't know how to post pictures but sounds like fun anyway. Any other challenging ideas?

Roberta 09-07-2011 05:11 AM

Maybe we could have a section "What I did this year" because I might have a project I could post :)

sguillot 09-07-2011 05:11 AM

Now that's more my speed.

I seem to lack focus when it comes to completing projects. I have about a dozen projects to finish and am sort of beating myself up about it.

grannypat7925 09-07-2011 06:02 AM

I might get a simple baby quilt done in a weekend but nothing any more complicated for sure.

mhansen6 09-07-2011 06:22 AM

I have often wondered the same thing. They must get up at 4 am and work straight until 10 pm. No kids, no husband, no cooking, no cleaning. I am lucky to get an hour in before my husband finds something else for me to do.

I finished this block for our quilt group exchange for a quilt with a Western theme. No face as I didn't want to mess it up. Recipient can do that if she wishes.

sguillot 09-07-2011 06:59 AM

That is adorable. Good Job

Reanebean 09-07-2011 07:07 AM

The only time I can get something done in a weekend is when I go on a retreat. Nothing seems to be accomplished at home. There is laundry, grocery shopping, a book, the TV or the husband that gets in the way. LOL

quiltin amma 09-07-2011 07:11 AM

I wish my body could keep up with my head! I want to do so many projects, but I can't seem to do more than just a few hours a week. It took me 3 yrs to finish my last project.

cattailsquilts 09-07-2011 07:30 AM

Well, it was much easier for me to crank quilts out before I found this forum, that's for sure! LOL

It also doesn't help that the former teeny baby is now a romping toddler, so instead of sitting in one place & sleeping most of the time, he's running all over & demanding mommy's attention.

Productivity? What's that??

Evie 09-07-2011 07:31 AM

Well, I didn't do any quilting this past weekend -- so there! My mood swings are notorious. I'll quilt almost non-stop for weeks on end and then "lose" interest for a couple of weeks, instead getting into other crafts or feeling the "need" to clean or read or . . . . So much to do, so little time! :)
