THINGS I HAVE LEARNED about quilting:

1. Measure TWICE cut once...
2. Don’t cut till your absolutely sure you measured correctly..
3. I cant sew a STRAIGHT ¼ line to save my life...
4. Due to Number 3 – sewing a scant ¼ would not be favorable either in my lifetime...
5. When your rotary cutter states SHARP on the package, it REALLY is...
6. Pins hurt when you forget to pick them up off the floor....
7. My corner/points will never ever be as perfect as yours, so Im not going to compete with you…
8. Due to Number 7, ‘Scrappy’ is my best friend
9. All nighters usually end up with A LOT of mistakes and one wonky quilt..
10. While in ‘quilting’ mode, Laundry doesn’t get done, dishes don’t get washed. So you better head out to Wally world and buy yourself some underwear, it’ll be a while… oh yea and grab dinner too!!!
11. In the quilting world of scrappy quilts, UGLIES are a must- the uglier the better…
12. Uglies can be beautiful when its cut small enough to actually see how ugly it really is….
13. 99.9% of the time I will have a thread and or a fabric snippets somewhere on my body…
14. You have a greater chance of locating me by following the trail of fabric snippets i've dropped along the way..
15. When your machine is having a bad day, plan on having one too..

So, what have you learned lately??? (this is all in good fun)

Linda B 08-17-2011 12:27 PM

Read the directions silently to yourself. Then read them again, out loud. Then just to be sure, read them again!!

bearisgray 08-17-2011 12:27 PM

The more you want to work on your project - the more that others will want - like clean clothes, meals prepared, the house presentable - - -

luvTooQuilt 08-17-2011 12:28 PM

18. Dont sew your finger..

fabric whisperer 08-17-2011 12:28 PM

I've heard that before, I get a good giggle every time I see this :)

alikat110 08-17-2011 12:34 PM

Surrounding yourself with other quilters gives you a sense of belonging, and inspires you in your craft!

Faren 08-17-2011 12:38 PM

When you are measuring twice, make sure you know what your measurement is supposed to be!

Ummm - that does help! (Ask me how I know - on second thought, never mind!)

jme 08-17-2011 01:16 PM

I relate to all the above but #10, you should see my house :)

quiltingme 08-17-2011 01:20 PM

Loved it! And, those are SO TRUE!!!!! Let's see, what I learned today was.... when you are washing your fabric, don't overload your washer or dryer or you will get one VERY WRINKLED wad of fabric at the end!!!

Buckeye Rose 08-17-2011 01:35 PM

when using spray basting, and it says use sparingly....it really means sparingly.....doesn't take much to make it sticky

I should have done this today...Ripped out a seam 3 times. Actually had it right the first time

Helovesme 08-17-2011 01:44 PM

when in doubt, don't! get on the message board and ask for advice!

dakotamaid 08-17-2011 02:25 PM

Don't let those out of the world, gorgeous, I'd never try that, quilts keep me from doing my own thing.:)

amyjo 08-17-2011 02:31 PM

let everything set til you are done. if dh wants anything to eat go to town. I NO COOK .

CristyK1 08-17-2011 02:35 PM

I've learned that no matter how bad you want to sew, life gets in the way.

Joanns is not open at 10pm when you break three needles in a row

The day you decide to sew and leave the house work is the day you get visitors drop in.

SharonTheriault 08-17-2011 03:17 PM

No matter how many times you do that seam, it's still going to end up too short.

running1 08-17-2011 03:18 PM

When you drop pins you will not immediately find all of them...some will hide and then jump out and surprise you later on.

amma 08-17-2011 03:51 PM

When you make the same mistake 3 times in a row, it is time to quit for the day :D:D:D

charity-crafter 08-17-2011 03:54 PM

Don't bleed on the fabric. That was the first rule when I was teaching a handful of 12 year olds.

carrot 08-17-2011 04:22 PM

Wear a klutz glove .........yes, I did !!!

tmg 08-17-2011 04:52 PM

The seam ripper is the friend you don't want but you are glad when you need it.

My kids know about this one. They are all the time stepping on them  I tell them to wear shoes in the house if they don't want to pick up pins.

1234Irene 08-17-2011 05:03 PM

Rulers do not make great bridges for DS little hot wheels............ :(

Linda B 08-17-2011 05:08 PM

There are some things your spouse just doesn't need to know about -- like that late night online order for $100 worth of fabric you simply could not live without but don't really have a plan for right now!

Linda B 08-17-2011 05:09 PM

Oh, and keep track of all his 'silly' expenses so you can justify that $100 worth of fabric!

Monika 08-17-2011 05:13 PM

Good oness!!!

TheSevenYearStitch 08-17-2011 05:20 PM

Take notes as you progress so you'll remember what you intend to do. But don't bother reading the notes because you'll never make out what they heck they are referring to.

Wrong. Do it the way you think is right then ask the message board. ;)

JulieR 08-17-2011 06:21 PM

Don't drink and sew...except when FMQ.

Eyeballing it and digging out a ruler are not equal measuring strategies.

Eyeballing it leads to drinking...and FMQ.

AliKat 08-17-2011 07:01 PM

Not lately, but am important lesson for me.

Rewrite the directions in my own language!! That may even include how I do some things, like make HST's or how I make my squares in squares. I refuse to join two bias edges when I can sew 2 squares diagonally 1/4" either side of the diagonal line then cut tween the sewing lines. I like my own way of doing flying geese. I will even draw a colored drawing of the block if it helps me.

Painiacs 08-17-2011 07:51 PM

Especially 13! And on hubby, the dog....

Sienna's GiGi 08-17-2011 09:40 PM

Count to ten, walk away or take a break when your machine gives you attitude and YOU did nothing wrong.

deanneellen 08-17-2011 09:49 PM

Ok so at the time putting 4 different borders on the quilt seemed like a great idea but now that I am down to the wire, maybe not? Next time try thinking things through a little more!

allie1448 08-18-2011 02:59 AM

Lol, thank you for making me laugh and for reminding me!!

Selena 08-18-2011 03:39 AM

Cutting table height matters when using a rotary cutter. It's the difference between a straight cut and a wavy one. AND a rotary cutter doesn't respect you if you show fear. Don't let it see you hesitate. Even so, it will try to deviate from the path. You have to show it who's boss.
