I use both sewing and computer chairs at my machines.
I recently acquired a 24/7 chair at a charity auction, and loving it in my sewing room. I have gone to using my ironing board as a cutting board, because its higher and I dont' have to bend over as much.
A wooden chair. However, a friend has offered me what she calls an ergonomic chair, as she is moving house. All the better, all I have to do is pick it up. It may make a difference.
I use a straight back all wood. Works for me.
An old wooden desk chair, sturdy one, at my sewing table. No cushion. It works height-wise and lets me sew a little longer with my pinched lumbar nerve. When I am working at the kitchen table, quilting, I sit on a folding stool which gets me up high enough, slightly padded seat, no back.
I have a computer chair with wheels and a pillow I sit on.
My DH just bought me a new chair for sewing. It came from Staples. It is a manager style office chair and the model is called Lockridge. It has a lumbar support that really fits my back well.
Just use a dining chair.
a computer chair with wheels.

Ditto for me. Very comfortable and great support. I like having arms on the chair for those moments when I need to simply rest my shoulders/arms. Good luck! |
I have two chairs that i use. One is in my sewing room that is an armless office chair with wheels. The other one is the living room that I have my other sewing machine set up in and it is an armless, backless artist chair. Without the back, I'm more concious about the way I sit. it also has wheels.

I use a computer chair with wheels but no arms. I have a unfinished basement and I love being a to wheel from my sewing machine to cutting board
I have an Office chair. Went to Staples Office supply and sat in 15 to 20 different ones. Then I narrowed it down to 2 or 3, then sat for a while in each one. Got one ,and it has rollers and arms and is not too heavy, as it goes with me on retreats ,etc.
I like a computer chair with wheels. That way I can easily turn from machine to ironing board or to other supplies needed.
Leather office chair with arms. It has the ability to rock back a little to rest my back.

office chair with wheels, no arms

Just bought a new desk chair with my staples rewards. I haven't brought it up the three flights of stairs to my apt yet because it has rained two out of three days and I will have to bring it up in pieces. But when I tried it out in the store, it was so comfy. If the cat likes it, it is a keeper!

I sew standing up, sitting ruins my back.

Do you use a foot pedal standing up? I tried and couldn't control it very well.
I use an armless computer chair that I bought at a yard sale for $5.00. Still can't figure out why they were getting rid of it. Multiple adjustments, upholstered fabric is flawless, rollers work---their loss, my gain.

I have this really interesting old wooden sewing chair my sister gave me - there is a bentwood curved piece on the back that is positioned such that it makes you sit up straight when you sew. It really helps keep me from back strain. I did add a pillow for a butt cushion. Not as pretty as the cane work, but it makes it just the right height.

I just bought a new chair from Office Depot, very nice, spins and everything, lol.
(... I have an unusual chair or rather a stool. It is a workbench stool bought at local motor spare parts outlet (males in my family are all in the motor trade) on sale. has like Harley Davidson motor bike saddle seat. all adjustable thingy's, back, height seat etc., no arms, good solid base with foot rest and wheels... )I posted this not long after joining the board, I bought it because my bench at the time was quite high and this stool has a higher raising height. I now have new, lower bench and still use it. The seat keeps your legs apart, which makes you sit up straighter = less back and shoulder aches.

Figured I'd throw that out there if anyone has a sore back, works wonders! I spent 4 months so hooked on pain meds I could barely function. I'm young, only 33, lots of years left in my back and I have to take care of it. |

I use my computer chair that is on wheels and has arms.

I've read that you shouldn't use a computer chair you should have a sewing chair. I'm interested in hearing the answer to this too.
I use an office chair. Very comfortable and easy to maneuver.
