What quilting ruler do you use the most?
What quilting ruler do you like the best and what is it used for?

It's probably a tie for what I use the most between my ShapeCut 12x12" ruler & my basic 3.5" x 18" ruler. The ShapeCut is great for cutting strips (and later on, squares/rectangles) that are all equal sizes. I have the worst time trying to line up my ruler to get properly sized cuts.
I'm currently in love with my 10.5" x 10.5" Omnigrip ruler because I made an Irish Chain with 10" finished applique blocks so that way I was able to quickly & easily square up all 12 blocks. It is also helpful for cutting nice squares since it has so many lines (45 degree, squares on the half inch, easy to read, all the lines are the same size). I like it better than the ShapeCut once I've picked up & moved my stacks of fabric because I know I'll never get them lined up perfectly ever again and my cuts will be off. |
I own exactly one ruler: the 6x12" ruler from "Quilt in a Day". I use it for just about EVERYTHING!
I have a ruler of about every size but my most used one is the 8 1/2" x 24".
6 x 12 and all of Deb Tucker's rulers for my projects.
The ruler that always sits by my cutting board is my Omnigrid 3X18. I do most of my cutting with it and occasionally use my Omnigrid squares for bigger widths.

My O'lipfa 5 inch X 24 inch ruler. The lip edge stays secure on the edge of the cutting mat and helps with very accurate cuts.
i use my 6.5x24 the most... it's the only one i had for my first couple of years. now i have a drawer full! i use my 6x6 and my 12.5x12.5 square up a lot.
I use my June Taylor Shape Cut 12' x 12" the most. I couldn't quilt without it.

I have the same Omnigrid rulers that I had when they came out. They are less expensive than the Creative Grids are. I find I am using my 2.5"wide one a bit more than the 5.5".6.5" & 8.5" square and the 6.5"x24"
I used to use my 12" and 6" x 24" most but since I got my Stripology ruler
that's what I used most of the time for cutting and it's not just for 2.5" strips. You can cut almost any strip size you want. If your fabric is well starched you can do a lot of cutting in minutes. I even managed to cut strips into squares. I'm spoiled. :o:) |
I use my Omnigrip 8.5" x 24" mostly. Also other Omnigrid rulers, and Easy Angle, and Companion Angle.....:)

3.5" omnigrid yellow
2.5" gingher 1"X6" Cottage Tools and Omnigrid 6" square Omnigrid 6"X12" Cottage Tools and Omnigrid I have others for bigger cuts, but I make complicated quilts with lots of small pieces, so this is my go-to group. Plus each year during Bonnie Hunter's mysteries I use the Easy Angle rulers |
Omnigrid 6" x 24" and Omnigird 6" x 6" square

I use my "Fingerguard" (which are no longer made :() 6" x 12" and 6" x 18" almost exclusively. I just bought a 3" x 18" ruler to help with a WIP that calls for 3" squares. I have some square rulers that I sometime use. I don't use or buy specialty rulers, I just stick with the basics. I have some Omnigrid, some Fons & Porter and some Creative Grid squares.
It's a toss up between my Creative Grids 8.5" x 24.5" and their Quick Trim and Circle Ruler. I use the first for larger things and the second for smaller cuts.
I use my 6 x 24 in ruler the most, the other one would be the 6 x 12 inch. I have a lot of different size rulers and use them as needed, but those are the 2 that are always on top.

June Taylor with 1/2" slots is first with a 6 1/2 x 24 for straightening edges before binding second and a 9" square for squaring blocks third. The JT is the winner, hands down.
Omnigrid 6 x 24, 12.5 x 12.5 and 6 x 1. Last one when paper piecing trimming down1/4" seams.
Definitely use my 6x24 the most... however, having read some of the other response, I think I have a 6x12 buried somewhere and will pull it out for my next project.
My 6x24- inch. It's my first choice for almost everything unless I am cutting very small pieces.
I use my 5"x24" the most but I do have a drawer full and I love them all
I use my 6 by 12 most.
My 6x12, 6x24 and 8 1/2x24 are always on my table. I can use them to make up any combination I need. I also have learned to appreciate the movable neon tape that you can use to hi-light the cutting line on the ruler.

I use my Olfa 5x24 with a lip on it for cutting larger/longer pieces. It is the first ruler I got. I also have a frosted Olfa 6x24 at my summer home and love it too. I just got a Creative Grid 3x12 and I use it all the time. How did I manage without it? Life is so much easier with it.
Other than my long cutting ruler, the Fons and Porter HST square up ruler gets a lot of use, and gets those babies perfect. It takes a lot of time, though and now I am starting to avoid patterns with HST...even though I love the designs they make.
My favorite is my Omnigrip 2 1/2 x 12 1/2 ruler. Also have a 6 x 24 that I use a lot.
The most--my Fiskars 6 x 12". In fact, I'm noticing that some of the lines are wearing off--have had it for a long time! I like the Fiskars as the orange lines show up on almost every color of fabric that I use.
Used for--a lot. It's not awkward to handle and fits well on the folded yardage. I have a longer one for use on longer cutting such as squaring up a quilt but the 12"er is a handy length. |
I use my creative grids 7 1/2 by 7 1/2 for squaring most of my smaller blocks. Of course, I use my 6 1/2 by 4 or 8 1/2 by 24 for my strip cutting. Then mostly b 7 1/2 by 7 1/2. I have 2, as I have rounded one of the corners on my first one.
I have a lot of rulers...I do use my 6.5 by 24 a lot but also use the June Taylor strip cutting ruler a lot. I am just now starting to use the EZ triangle and 6" block since I am trying to do Bonnie Hunter Mystery quilt this year.
6"x24"... it's large enough to square up the end of a bolt, or any width of fabric, when folded. Also great for cutting strips the width of fabric. Second most used is my 3"18". Handy for cross cuts of strips, plus many other uses. I have many other rulers (many squares and some triangles) but use those two the most.
I prefer the little ones for piecing, a Quilt Sense 3 x 9" and a Creative Grids 3 1/2 x 12 1/2"
I use my 6"x24" almost exclusively. Any others are for special projects.
I'm a June Taylor Shape Cut junkie! I use it for almost everything. I really like the 12"x18" for cutting lots of pieces from WOF strips.
I use my Salem 6x12 all the time. Has nice thin lines, not too much stuff printed on it so it is easy to see too.
