What quilting rules do you break?

I cut all kinds of things with my fabric scissors, including cardboard and paper. I seldom take breaks. I never put my location on quilt labels.

How about you?

pookie ookie 07-31-2010 08:48 PM

All of them. Or, so it seems.

I frequently use calculated naiveté. Cut with scissors and don't measure. I like the old school imperfection (even when I have to make it happen). :0D

stefanib123 07-31-2010 08:54 PM

All of them. I'm a rebel. LOL!

cjomomma 07-31-2010 09:02 PM

I don't really follow rules either. I'm not afraid to put my own twist on things and make it mine.

Scissor Queen 07-31-2010 09:02 PM

I break lots of them. The biggest one I break is not sewing my blocks into rows. I break color rules too.

brenda21 07-31-2010 09:12 PM

I almost never wash fabric first. It just bothers me to put the pretty fabric in the washing machine :)

I don't either, unless it is flannel!

M.E.H. 07-31-2010 09:24 PM

HUHHHHH there are rules!!!! I had no idea :) I must have broken them all!

sharon b 07-31-2010 10:01 PM

All of them  Because I can

lindyline 07-31-2010 10:08 PM

Wow, who knew there were any rules.
My excuse is I live in Australia, and we den't like rules much.

Neither do we Irish. Rules are only there to be ignored or got round!

kwiltkrazy 07-31-2010 10:12 PM

I don't prewash and I use a dull cutter sometimes, on some things, like curved piecing I don't use a 1/4" seam allowance.

But, my stuff turns out good enough for me.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 07-31-2010 10:25 PM

Are there rules for this ??? :)

Can call it art and get away with all sorts of stuff !!! ;)

manyana 07-31-2010 10:36 PM

Where is this darn list of rules so that I can follow them!!!. Rules I make my own as I go along.

wvdek 07-31-2010 11:02 PM

Rules? I was supposed to follow some rules? Oh well.

knlsmith 07-31-2010 11:15 PM

Rules? Isn't that the thing you measure 12 inches with? Oh I use that all the time! LOL

LucyInTheSky 07-31-2010 11:15 PM

I quilt with my shoes off. I constantly hear quilters warn about using the rotary cutter or ironing sans footwear, but I can't wear shoes!

I used to cut with the rotary blade towards me (easier to control). I was doing a demo in a guild class... almost gave 10 ladies heart attacks with 1 cut. I've since gotten out of that habit but purely because it's easier now to cut the "right" way.

I also sometimes iron my blocks instead of pressing... gasp!

miss_ticky2 08-01-2010 12:02 AM

Are there rules?? :D

MegsAnn 08-01-2010 12:29 AM

Oooh yeah I iron too. (Gasp!)

Me too! It's not a rule until you break it....isn't that a rule????

ckcowl 08-01-2010 02:39 AM

There are RULES??? wow, i never knew :)
can i be breaking them all with out even knowing? probably:)

Darlene 08-01-2010 02:44 AM

There are no rules only suggestions. LOL

Same here, I never wash fabric unless it's flannel, or unless it's for a Board swap!

knlsmith 08-01-2010 03:48 AM

OH, BUT when it comes to scissors, my fabric scissors are just for fabric. This isn't a rule, it is a fact. Using them on other items, like screws, nails, wire, and stuff will dull them. LOL ;)

raptureready 08-01-2010 04:15 AM

THERE'S RULES???? When did that happen?

gollytwo 08-01-2010 04:43 AM

I rarely wash fabric
I don't press anything til the block is finished
I don't iron wrinkled fabric before cutting it, a plastic see-through template does it well enough
I don't change a blade til it hurts my wrist to press so hard
All colours go together
Sometimes use 1/4" of selvage for seam allowance
Use fabric scissor to cut paper if paper scissors aren't within reach
Fudge on seam allowance if I need to
Can't think of any others, but I probably break them too ... am a Taurus - stubborn, bull in china shop

fryguymoore 08-01-2010 04:44 AM

I let my cat in the sewing room. He is worse than a two year old, he plays with EVERYTHING!

cminor 08-01-2010 04:52 AM

I don't follow any rules until I learn my lesson. I almost always wash my fabric now, but never press, I always seem to iron.

My grandkids can't believe how many, shears, scissors, snips, rotary cutters I have. I have a special pair of old shears only for paper and cardboard. That is probably the only rule I have. I thought we banished the quilt police in another thread.

max's grandma 08-01-2010 05:18 AM

why do you wash flannel, does it shrink?

gollytwo 08-01-2010 05:29 AM

yes

redkimba 08-01-2010 05:31 AM

I thought that they were more like guidelines than actual rules.

I'm only accurate when I'm contributing a block to a community quilt, ie a wedding quilt for a friend.

Any "mistakes" is just part of the charm & proof that a live human made that quilt for you.

grann of 6 08-01-2010 05:32 AM

Oh, yes, it shrinks a lot. And it actually gets softer and fuzzier. Not so easy to sew, but nicer in the long run. Cottons I don't usually wash; depends on what I am making and how it will be used.

SuziC 08-01-2010 05:39 AM

I make up my own rules.....NO RULES

ghostrider 08-01-2010 06:08 AM

The only rule I DO follow is the one that defines "quilt"...three layers held together with stitching.

quiltsRfun 08-01-2010 06:28 AM

I actually made a quilt out of all polyester fabric. Do I hear the quilt police knocking on my door? :D

SC 08-01-2010 06:37 AM

Rules? We're supposed to follow rules? Is it a rule that you have to follow rules?

CraftsByRobin 08-01-2010 06:39 AM

*raises hand* ummm there are rules??? Ummm who lost the manual to quilting?
