I have a pair of Friskar's Razor-Edged Scissors that are incredibly awesome. I've had them for about 6 years, and they are still as sharp as the day I bought them. Somehow I frequently end up running them across a finger and cut my own self!
I only own one small pair of 4" Gingers, so can't add to that conversation. I just know the Razor-Edged Friskar's are my go-to scissors, and have held up extremely well. I think they're reasonably priced, even though I paid much less for mine then they cost today. Hope this helps, Debbie in Austin |
I have Fiskars too! I like them very well, If I loose them I'm not out of alot of money.
|
I love Ginghers, especially the fact that I can have them sharpened over and over. They cut like butter. Much better than some of the cheaper brands.
|
I was sold on Fiskars until I inherited my grandmother's Ginghers scissors ... a whole container of them. :) I'm still going through her stuff, so I don't even know exactly what kind of Ginghers are in there, but just one use of the 8" (or so?) pair was enough to sell me on them!
They're so sharp I bet they could cut thread in half length-wise! ;) |
Read somewhere that Fiskar bought out Gingher..I think I saw it from one of the E-Bay sellers awhile back...........

It included 7" shears, hinged ones that pull apart, snips, embroidery scissors and a small multi purpose pair. Happy snipping!
I like Fiskar too. I don't have any trouble sharpening them using the Fiskar sharpener --no idea where I got it. |
First of all, I, too, have a pair of Ginghers from the 60's that are still in wonderful condition. These were the ones that I threatened my children with loss of life and limb if I ever saw them cutting paper with them!!
I still use them occasionally, but mostly I use my Fiskars, in 3 different sizes, because of the tendonitis in my thumbs. I really like them, and they're sure easy on arthritic hands. |
Whatever you select , Just thought I would share the tradition of giving a coin with any pointed gift," to protect the recipient from the sharp point."

Scissors are a very personnal item because we all have the need for a different feel and cut. I have Weiss, Gingher, Fiskars and Kai and love each pair for the job they do. I even have a no name pair that was very cheap and just love them. Maybe a small grouping of them would make a nice gift.

They are fabulous and you can go to http://www.kaiscissors.com and find all the ones you might want. |
if she does pattern sewing,i mean garments..Ginghers are wonderful, get the bent or angles pair for her.
for paper cutting, get her a pair of fiskers.. sale or coupon! |
Olivia's Grandma,
How did you end up with 200 scissors? What do you do with them all? My gosh, I bid on old scissors at auctions but I may have ten if that. Nettie |
I have several different brands, but I always go for the Ginghers. 2 pr of my Ginghers are 30 yrs old and work wonderfully!
|
There are sewing scissors that aren't Gingher?!
|
My husband bought me a pair of Gingher's a long time ago for Christmas. I was so surprised but then so was he, he had purchased left handed scissors! No problem, we returned them for right handed. I have never had to have them sharpened but they only cut material.
|
I have a pair of Fiskars from JoAnns. Used my 40% off coupon.
I use them to trim the stabilizer from my machine embroidery. They stay very sharp. The blade is about 3 inches. I am a lefty and the pair I bought has straight handles so they can be used for leftt or right handed people. My husband wanted a pair of scissors for work, he is a mechanic, he needed something to cut out gaskets and stuff, he bought a pair of the Fiskars, using another 40% off coupon. He bought a pair with longer blades and he has said they are still very sharp after using and abusing them for several years. I think his has the long straight handles as well, the ones with the holes in the handles will hurt your thumbs if cutting a heavy product. |
Ginghers

If she is crafting & sewing she should not use her sewing sissors for her crafting.......

The Gingher plant in Greensboro, NC had a two weekend sale you would have loved. I didn't know there were so many types of Gingher scissors. Needless to say, we didn't come away empty handed.

When I first started quilting I bought a set
of Fiskars (three different sizes in set) and still prefer using them. Betty Lee |

My first pair was Ginghers, just had them sharpened last year, but the problem has always been that they don't seem to open and close with ease. Any suggestions. I currently use Friskers, and they cut well and are really sharp, right to the tips. I have scissors marked for paper, tape, etc., and you don't want to see my rage if anyone were to use my fabric scissors for anything else.
|
I have a pair of embroidery scissors that I absolutely love. They're made by "Galaxy," and they're rainbow colored, like wet oil on a road. They're really just two slim pieces of steel with a spring load. They are so sharp, lightweight, and perfect.
|
I LOVE my Ginghers. I've had them for at least 20 years and they are still sharp enough to cut me if I'm not careful. Of course, I use them ONLY for fabric.
|
Gingher are my choice
|
I have always liked Fiskars. I sure don't use them very much since I acquired a rotary cutter, though!
I had a friend that worked in a studio where scissors were thrown around like any other toolbox tool, and he said Fiskars fell apart. I don't let anyone use my sewing scissors for anything else, so we have a $5.00 pair in the kitchen drawer for everything else. They came from Wal-Mart, and I never expected them to last, but they must be ten years old now. They have a grip like Fiskars. |
I have a pair of ginghers, but this year in Paducah, I picked up a pair of Kai.
I put the ginghers away and only use the Kai now. |
Scissor enlightenment.

ginghers - i got them thru my home extension club - they're sharp enough to cut your finger off. i also have a pair of the duck bill ginghers. all half price thru extension club!!! and i use cheap snippers for threads - NEVER a good pair of scissors!
|
me too - i forgot that in my first post. i also have a small pair of curved blade by fiskar. i do use them most especially for applique and embroidery.
|
I have a tag hanging from my Gingher shears: "Don't even think about using these!!" I only use them on fabric. Paper dulls them in no time flat. (The tag was for my family, meaning "hands off!)
|
Gingher's can't be beat
|
Gingher---I have several sizes and the thread snip. I don't know what I would do without them. Mine are probably 20 years old and still work perfectly.
|
Also include rotary cutters. I cut out my patterns with the very small rotary cutters too.

I love my Ginghers, all of them, the black ones are VERY light weight, and easy on my hands. and the snips are the best!
|
I have a pair with a spring in the handle so they reopen automatically saving my poor arthritic hands. Love them.
|
Ginghers cuts fabric like butta, 39.99
they do make a 19.99 pair that has nylon handles that cuts fabric well-never any wire!!!!!! or cardboard!!! crafting scissors in general, look at walmart or a craft store. JoAnns has the separate depts., i would ask her without letting on what you are trying. there are scissors that have different cutting lines, etc. i use a cricket pair for hand sewing. |
