Clueless Quilter 09-28-2010 03:41 PM

I have and use both Fiskar's and Ginghers. I have to admit that I use my Fiskar's with the spring handle more than my Gingher's which are the same size. They are much lighter and there is much less stress on my hand when cutting

(FYI: Both Fiskar and Gingher are owned and made by the same corporation. If you go to the Gingher web site there is a link to the Fiskar web site.)

Annaquilts 09-28-2010 03:45 PM

Just the plain Fiskars for $10. They have left handed ones too. When they get dull they get demoted to house hold scissor. Friskars would be my second choice. Heard good things about the Gingher ones. Just too pricey for me as my kids and DH "borrow" and use my scissors for all kinds of stuff rendering them useless for quilting.

Put a tiny padlock around the handles and hide the key.

Ginghers are the very best and she will be so-o-o-o pleased. However, as a former RN, I reach for the bandage scissors I carried in my pocket for years. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

trugger 09-28-2010 04:46 PM

Leah, I love your photo of your scissors!

trugger 09-28-2010 04:51 PM

Whoops, I meant, LEAHA, I love your photo of your scissors!

Leota 09-28-2010 04:57 PM

A good SHARP pair. I have several pairs of Gingers, Fiskers, and "cheap" sewing scissors that came in a set that are really good...

jitkaau 09-28-2010 05:02 PM

Ginghers are very good, and they have a sharpening service on their brand of scissor, if you live in the USA. I have a pair of Serasharp (hope the spelling is correct) that have served me for over 30 years of solid use as well as some Solingen which have been equally as good.

lnikkers52 09-28-2010 05:10 PM

I have a 30 year old pair of Fuller Brush scissors. I have them sharpened every two or three years and they are still going strong. So im not in the market for any new ones just yet.

I was a Gingher girl through and through...that is until I tried Kai. Kai is a hard to find brand, but they are available online. I bought my at the Houston quilt show. They have the best edge and are so lightweight. I still have a my Ginghers, but I find myself never reaching for them. Kai all the way

:D

Kai was my first rotary cutter. I have never replaced the blade and have made at least 60 quilts with it. It is still cutting without effort. I bought it because the blade retracts automatically when not in use.

Ginghers

bjnicholson 09-28-2010 05:42 PM

The last time I asked about scissor sharpening at JoAnns, I was told that they don't do it anymore because of insurance issues!? I just bought a pair of Fiskars that they use at the cutting table. They love them and they're very reasonable.

I'm still using my Ginghar sewing scissors from the 60's. I think my small scissors for snipping threads while quilting & cupping applique pieces with Steam n' Seam attached is a Mundal.

penski 09-28-2010 05:45 PM

i just use a pair of Fiskars because i dont use them that often i use my cutter or rip my material so getting a exspensive pair would not make a differance to me but i did notice someone else said they dont stay sharp very long and i noticed mine were getting dull i have used them for about 4 years and never sharpened them

I have a number of pairs of Fiskars too, and have the same problem with them getting dull fairly fast. However my Joann's has the sharpener man come every other month, so I space my sharpening out over a few months in order not to have one big bill. I'm a big scissors person. My DH got me some Ginghers for Christmas last year and I love them too. How often do Ginghers need to be sharpened? Can anyone estimate for me. So far mine are doing fine.

My favorite are LEFT HAND CUTTING SCISSORS. I love these scissors and no one, absolutely no one in my house, will use them. They are all mine!

Cheshirecatquilter 09-28-2010 06:12 PM

It didn't matter what type of scissors I bought or what threats I made to my brood, they always got commandeered and used to cut paper, cardboard, flowers, wire, you name it. Scissor abuse. So, if there are children in the house I'd advise against buying the most expensive scissors and opt for the easily replaceable ones, like middle of the road Fiskars.

You can padlock the handles together. Keeps everybody from using them.

My step daughter used to tel me that the Ginghers is the best one here but I never try yet. I brought Singer scissor
from Thailand cause in my country, Singer scissor is the best one there and Its sharpeness is last long...my mom used to have one Singer since she was teenager. It's conditions still very good...

I sometimes tied to them a long rope with a honkin' big sign on the end that said, "Mom's -- keep your mitts off". It didn't even slow the little buggers down. Now they are all grown and gone, and I wish they were still here stealing my scissors.

How about a zapper alarm? I had one on a Monte Carlo I owned. Some guy was trying to break into it . The sheriff found the guy laying next to my car.........lol......... Then told me to get rid of the alarm.

But they're terribly expensive aren't they? Can you tell me what makes the difference between them and other good quality scissors?

They don't look all that expensive to me. Check this page.

I have a pair of 6 inch gold seal scissors my dad gave me 55 years ago, to be used for sewing only! I was 11 and just got out of sixth grade, took a mother/daughter sewing class with my mother at the Pfaff sewing center, down town SD. In 55 years those scissors have only been used for sewing, fabric and thread. and they have only been sharpened once, they are still sharp!

My Kai scissors were less than $20.00, and they have free shipping. I have never sharpened them. They are razer sharp.
I love how they grip the fabric as I cut with them. My next Kai purchase will be a rotary cutter.

I love my Ginghers. I also like the Fiskar's soft touch shears. Ginghers seem to stay sharp longer than the Fiskar's do.
I think Fiskar's scissors would be good for crafting, don't think I'd use Ginghers for paper though.

bjdemir 09-28-2010 08:15 PM

I really like my Fiskars. They automatically spring back to the open Position, so you don't have to open them. I find this less stressful on my hands.

Honey 09-28-2010 08:19 PM

I wish I had had a pair of Ginghers when I was making cloths for my 4 kids. I wouldn't part with them now. I have the regular pair and a smaller pair. But if anyone even thought that they were going to touch paper with them, they would lose fingers!

gale 09-28-2010 08:37 PM

I've never tried Kai sewing scissors but I have the 6" rubber stamping scissors for cutting unmounted rubber stamps and they are amazing.

I like Ginghers and Mundial. I use both.

BTW, what is the pattern name of your red, white and blue quilt and where did you get it? It is wonderful.

Funny, every time the discussion of scissors comes up with my quiltey friends they all mention how good Kai are, but how expensive. I never bothered to look them up since I have so many scissors already, but I can see they aren't any more expensive than Gingher. I think a pair of the bent handle will go on my Christmas wish list this year
Thanks.

lol ya all are too darned funny .. I use Ginghars and have for years. (love the evil twin quote, I use that evil twin part all the time !!LOL)

Cheshirecatquilter 09-29-2010 01:01 PM

Chasing Hawk, I like your style. Where were you when I needed suggestions? :)

cindyg 09-29-2010 01:16 PM

I was never real picky about my scissors until I bought and tried Kai. I love them. I got mine at the Houston Quilt Festival and I won't pass by their booth this year, that's for sure. I'm sure I'll find another pair that I just can't live without. I have a small pr. and the larger pair with a 5 or 6" blade.

I love my Ginghers, but I don't have 200 pairs. I have my original pair that was bought in the seventies. I also have my mom's Ginghers that I hide from all the people looking for something to cut paper with.

My paper scissors are the Fischers (sp?) that were once used on fabric. I also have my college Singers that have held a nice edge. They've been resharpened several times over the years. For snipping thread I have a nice pair of embroidery scissors and a little pair of cuticle scissors.

I have about 3 different sizes of Ghingers & love them but be careful.....Only ONE blade is supposed to be sharpened! I took mine to a scissor sharpener at Hancock's, he ruined them by sharpening both blades. I had to buy a new pair! 8" sewing scissors. They are expensive but worth it. :-D

Annz 09-29-2010 07:05 PM

Ginghers for sure.
