I made a large wall size and got $100, and a double bed size for $175. Both were made of scraps from other quilts, so essentially "free" fabrics. Both were to friends.

I think sewing for a family member is different than sewing for a friend. I doubt that I could charge the prices that people are suggesting also. After your mother-in-law pays for all the fabric, then charge her a nominal fee for your labor. Since it is a gift for her boyfriend, she probably thinks she should pay you.

What a pretty quilt. I would also let her pick out the fabric and see the actual cost just of the supplies. Then I would let her know how long it takes and let her decide on the labor costs.

I would charge 2 cents a sq inch. I think the going rate I've noticed is 2.5 cents per sq in. The 6 cents would probably cover the cost of the quilt completed from start to end. Team fabric is about 7.00 yard at Walmart, and it's excellent quality. I've seen it online from 7 to 15 a yard.

If you're not able to come to terms with normal charges for a quilt you might be better off just quoting her the prices and if she thinks it too expensive she can buy a cheaper one from India or China. By the sound of it, she wants to pay and perhaps you need to overcome your embarrassment at asking for the money. Surely she has asked you to do it because she admires your work. Time and skill are worth paying for. After all, I have seen beautiful Amish quilts on line for over a thousand dollars. The average price just for the materials in my country would be about $350. Custom quilting is sbout $500 on top of that. Edge to edge machine quilting would be about $100 - $150. You just need the confidence to know your work is good enough to ask the correct price.

I sat down a few years ago and took about two hours to figure in everything that I could think of if it were a business and I had to account for all that went into it. I came up with 25 cents a square inch. That may not sound like much, but a lap quilt of just 45 x 60 would come to $675.00.

If she is good to you and you love her, let her buy everything and pay for the quilting and make it for her. She sounds like she is worth it. I am sure she will do something nice for you.
