Well, today I was sewing along and knew the bobbin was going to run out soon. Rather than have it end in the middle of something, I opted to put in a new one. This so far seems normal, only I did not put the new full bobbin in. I closed the cover of the bobbin case and very nearly started sewing again without one.

How long before you realized it?

At least you didn't put the half full one back "IN"! ! lol!!

......about 7 seconds. I would have been saying naughty words if I actually had started sewing.

bearisgray 07-30-2009 08:51 PM

the dumbest thing I've done while sewing

I very thoroughly oiled my Bernina with FrayChek

tlrnhi 07-30-2009 08:55 PM

One day I couldn't figure out WHY my machine wouldn't work.
DUH Factor set it......it wasn't plugged in!!!

Yes, I was about ready to pack it up and take it to the repair man!

PrettyKitty 07-31-2009 12:21 AM

I frequently sew things together the wrong way, so the pattern is on the wrong iside when you open it up to press the seam. %&&*&*^%$*!!!!

Quilt4u 07-31-2009 01:27 AM

Sewed something the wrong way. Riped it out. Then sewed it the wrong way again.

kwhite 07-31-2009 02:29 AM

I have sewed the clothes I was wearing to the project.

Darlene 07-31-2009 03:05 AM

I have sewed the clothes I was wearing to the project.
I have done this a few times myself.

deedum 07-31-2009 03:55 AM

How about when I reached in to give the material a nudge to move along when I was sewing, caught my thumb. Put a nice little gash in it! Learned about the bamboo sticks as a tool  after that

I'm sorry.... but I laughed so hard coke nearly came out my nose when I read this! LOL

I can imagine how embarassing that would be!

My worst (so far) is sewing a pile of about 30 or 40 hst, chain piecing, one after the other, the whole lot of them, then discovering the bobbin ran out halfway down the first one.

deedum 07-31-2009 04:02 AM

now that is funny, sorry I say I have done a few like that myself!

kwhite 07-31-2009 04:04 AM

I seem to be very good at getting peoples drinks to shoot out their noses. I wonder how I can make a living with this skill.

It's not a pleasant sensation! LOL

;-)

Ninnie 07-31-2009 04:38 AM

I too have sewn my clothes to a quilt while lap quilting.

Bevanger 07-31-2009 04:41 AM

Trying to press my seams. I thought my iron died, but dummy me forgot to plug it in

King's Daughter 07-31-2009 05:08 AM

I've sewed things to my clothes; I've run the sewing machine needle through my fingernail; and the last quilt I made, which was for a class, I chainpieced all twelve blocks, got up to press, cut them apart, started pressing, and....the second one didn't match the first one. Oh no. Which one was wrong? How MANY were wrong? Well, only one was right. Spent what seemed like hours trying to pick out the stitching. Noticed some brown thread. Wait, I didn't use any brown thread! Blood will turn the thread brown. Was making such a hash of it (and my thumb), that I ended up trimming away the offending pieces, and cutting new ones. I seem to make lots of stupid boo-boos. I told my DH last night that I shouldn't be trusted with markers, irons, or sharp objects.

Riversong 07-31-2009 05:22 AM

I have quilted my project to my nightie,,,and once I went to Walmart and when I went to write a check, saw that I was wearing my thimble...DUH!!

that's really funny!

I was FMQing a project and I didn't notice that one corner was tucked under, so I ended up sewing that corner curled under "into" the quilt soI had to rip out all those meandering stitches and start over....

I've done that too!!!! Hee hee!

mamatobugboo 07-31-2009 05:27 AM

I was moving along quite well with meandering and I heard a thunk...

looked down and saw that I had sewn through the head of the safety pin without breaking the needle!

sewjoyce 07-31-2009 05:30 AM

Gosh -- you all sound like me!! I've sewn stuff to the clothes I was wearing, got a needle stuck in my finger (I was just trying to change the darn thing), scorched a block that was being stubborn about laying flat and when I was making the HST for my blue/yellow swap -- I ran out of bobbin thread about half way through and didn't notice....Some days I should just go back to bed

Eddie 07-31-2009 05:33 AM

When I was changing the blade on my rotary cutter, I was wiping the oil off of the blade with a paper towel and used too much pressure on it so that it slipped and sliced into the top of my thumb. I didn't think it would ever stop bleeding, after several band-aids. Who knew a major artery runs through our thumbs?

Been down that road to many times to count

jdavis 07-31-2009 06:06 AM

Thanks for the laughs, girls & boys.
Maybe it's a good thing I don't have enough time to sew as much as you all.
And I learned a long time ago that it doesn't pay to sew when I'm getting tired....too many mistakes!

nantucketsue 07-31-2009 07:00 AM

Well apart from strip pieceing several rows when the thread had run out, my Janome machine was making a lot of rattling noises. I spent ages checking everything, even removing all the spare feet from the on board storage, no difference. I switched off and put it away Later when I returned to the machine I noticed the noise had gone. The reason, I had closed the top cover, it was the lid that was rattling!!!!

sandiphi 07-31-2009 07:17 AM

I went away for a quilt retreat with a bunch of girls in my guild and when I took my machine out of the machine bag I realized I left the plug at home. ERRRRR. So now that is the first thing I pack.

EagarBeez 07-31-2009 07:19 AM

I've sewn the back of some of my pieces to the front. When I opened the seams I was wondering why it looked odd.

Now ya got my curiosity up (some folks call it being nosy, but I think it's all about the presentation!) - what did you do??

I have pretty much done what everyone else has done - sewn to my clothes, sewn without noticing the bobbin was empty, put a needle into my finger, oh, and last one I haven't seen mentioned is forgetting to change my foot for a particular stitch and hearing the needle slam into the foot and break! Ooooh, I hate that one. Always feel so stupid and careless.

sewjoyce 07-31-2009 07:27 AM

Did you ever sew a block together and then look at it, know that it's wrong but can't figure out what the heck you did?????

amandasgramma 07-31-2009 07:45 AM

Oh, this thread is priceless!!! Sure has made my day. Now I KNOW I'm normal!  Besides the usual, sewing without bobbin thread, breaking needles, using the wrong stitch, my all time favorite embarrassment was going to a class that required us to bring out walking foot. I couldn't find that darn thing to save my life. Looked EVERYWHERE and decided I'd left it at my girlfriends -- 3 hrs away! Went to the class and told them I'd have to buy another one :( but they let me borrow one of their extras. After I got home, it dawned on me......the foot was on my other sewing machine!!!

When some of the girls wasn't using their machine, I used theirs. When the machines were busy I cut fabric, ironed, helped others when needed. But, I didn't sew on my machine at all. We were 3 hours away from home, I was not driving back home to get it. I still had a good time.

Bill'sBonBon 07-31-2009 09:45 AM

One day I was sewing some blocks to a sash, they were animal themed so it wasn't hard to see where the right sides were, and I sew the right side to the wrong side. Gritted my teeth, ripped it out pinned it again, sewed the same way right to wrong. :x I bit my lip ripped it out pinned it again, looked real close, did it again but only pinned it  I then very carefully unpinned and very carefuly put right sides to gether and pinned again. :D Got it right that time. Where was my Brain darned if I know. But I stopped for a rest after that. :D

MadQuilter 07-31-2009 09:45 AM

I've trimmed a block without moving the other blocks out of the way, saying to myself: DON'T CUT THE FINISHED BLOCKS! YOU DON'T HAVE ANY MORE FABRIC!

I'm sure I don't need to finish writing what happened......

Oh, and I am notorious for keeping a few projects in piles on the work table. When I need to cut long pieces and use the long template, on occasion I play the fabric version of 52-card pickup when the template pushes the stack over the edge. YOU'D THINK I'D LEARN, huh?

Iluv2quilt 07-31-2009 09:50 AM

Well I do a lot of silly things, ranging from sewing wrong side to right side, patterns in wrong direction, etc. I think the silliest thing is where I try to sew while sleeping at the machine.

mochasue 07-31-2009 10:16 AM

Those are great. I have done my share, but my favorite is:

I have very long hair and I have cut my hair while using the rotary cutter.

Doesn't seem so bad, but I'm talking about cutting 16" of hair!

Oh, I've done that too!
Well, I haven't lopped 16" off, but a good chunk. I recently cut my hair, so now it's only about half way down my back, and I make sure to tie it up when I'm sewing, lol!

I don't know that I've done anything really brainless, pretty much everything that's been mentioned so far I am guilty of having done one or two (or seventeen... ) times.

The most annoying thing, I think, was probably not pinning enough before quilting, and doing fmq, and realizing a loooooooong time after that there was a huge fold. I really hate unpicking.

I've also cut right through my finished blocks while trimming excess on the one I was working on...more than once.

redkimba 07-31-2009 10:46 AM

I thought I had measured something using one of those lined rulers, but ended up cutting a strip that was 2.5 inches instead of 3 inches wide.

I had to go to the quilt store 10 miles away to get more fabric as I didn't have enough to make squares....
