What size of quilts do you make?

I like to make bed size quilts. It seems like I'm always changing the patterns to make the quilt bigger. I don't do wall hangings but think there are some gorgeous ones out there. I've been working on a couple of different patterns from American Patchwork and McCall's Quilting. I don't have software to help me, so out comes graft paper and rulers. Sometimes just adding extra blocks work but other times to get the design to work it takes more figuring. I don't want to just add boarders although I have done that a few times. What do you do to get it the size you want?

I usually make it whatever size it will make with the fabric that I have. Usually it's the background fabric that dictates the size :o)
I give them all away and rarely make something specific. My favorite way to add to the size of the quilt is to break up a border with a keyboard border within the plain one.
Hope this picture helps.

MOST of my quilts are all the same size, I call it "nap quilt" or "couch quilt" size - 72" x 72"

Why that size? Because it's the size *I* like best for myself! It's long enough to cover me from my feet up to my shoulders, and wide enough to wrap around me plus a couple of small dogs when I'm reading or napping on the couch. Or if DH and I are watching a movie, it's long enough to cover our feet and our laps and wide enough for us to share it. (Again, usually with a dog or two in there somewhere, and maybe a cat.)

Plus I really like square quilts for some reason. I do make bed quilts now and then, but the big 72" square is my favorite.

ckcowl 01-15-2015 12:24 PM

I make 98% of my quilts queen sized. Graph paper is a staple in my world, I buy it in large pads and always have it handy

ManiacQuilter2 01-15-2015 01:31 PM

I mostly make charity quilts now a days so they are more lap size quilts. You might look into getting a used copy of EQ7. I bought mine on eBay for around $100. Worth every penny once you get the hang of it. Mostly doing resizing of quilts to make them into lap size quilts.

PaperPrincess 01-15-2015 02:35 PM

I seem to make medium size throws, usually square and about 60X60. good size for use in a chair and if you want to cover your feet, just turn them on the diagonal.

KenmoreGal2 01-15-2015 02:59 PM

I find it's easy and fun to FMQ a lap sized quilt on my DSM. So that's the size I make. They usually end up about 50 x 65 or maybe a tad longer. I give them away so I figure I may as well make them in a size I enjoy working with. I often create my own (very simple) designs or else I modify a pattern by using less squares and/or bigger borders.

Leslie333 01-15-2015 03:00 PM

I typically make lap quilts that range from 4'x6' to 5'x7'. I'm planning to expand to bed sized quilts next.

Sharonquilts 01-15-2015 03:27 PM

As a beginner, I have primarily made lap quilts for charity and the size varies. Most of them are strip quilts. I like modern quilts so I basically make up a pattern I like. However, today, I tried some small squares and enjoyed that more than I thought. I have a strip top made but I think I'm going to take it apart and make all small 4-color blocks (about 4" square). I surprised myself ... matched the seams far better than I thought I could. Ha!

tellabella 01-15-2015 04:01 PM

All different sizes depending on who or what it's for...but I am finding I do not like square quilts....

Love this quilt!

I normally like to make bed size quilts .... any size from lap to queen really. When I want to make a quilt larger, out comes the graph paper and then I'm off searching quilt images to see if an idea pops out at me. If I can't find something that says "this belongs with this quilt" .... well then on goes some slab 'o borders.

toverly 01-15-2015 04:09 PM

My favorite size to make is 48 -54 w and 72 long. I think they get used more on the couch or recliner. I too pull out the graph paper to make those square patterns oblong.

Your quilt is SO pretty, love what you did with it!

Boston1954 01-15-2015 06:27 PM

Truth be told, I don't think any of mine are the same size. Mostly they would be considered to be lap quilts.

Jackie Spencer 01-15-2015 06:32 PM

Most of my quilts are queen size, if I see a pattern I like and it's a smaller size, I just make more blocks, and then re-design the border.

Lori S 01-15-2015 07:37 PM

I used to make smaller quilts lap size or twin, because I hated struggling with a bigger quilt in my machine. I find my quilts get put into use if I make bigger quilts . Now that I have discovered the freedom to make large quilts that comes from a good long arm professional most of my quilts are over 76 inches wide , and 86 inches long.

love to sew 01-15-2015 07:56 PM

I make all sizes from small baby quilts to queen size and everything in between. However, after thinking about it, if it is not a baby size (approx 35 x 42), I want to make it at least 55 wide and at least 65 long as that is the minimum for a Quilt of Valor.

quiltjoey 01-15-2015 08:08 PM

I like 54-6" x 72" because I can do them on my DSM. I'm finding $150 to $300 just to much to pay for LA-ing for something that will not be in a show… no quilt police here...

kristijoy 01-15-2015 09:39 PM

I'm a pretty new quilter and I'm making smallish lap quilts or crib size about 40x50 or so. Some of mine are more artsy and intended for wall hangings. I haven't been brave enough to tackle a twin size. I have an idea for my son's bed designed and a pile of fabric in the closet, but until I get my new table from DH :) I won't be able to put together a big piece yet. Maybe in a few months!

patsynel 01-16-2015 12:21 AM

I mostly make baby quilts 40" square for the new babies christened at my Church. Also lap quilts approx 44" x 68" for people who are ill or in nursing homes.

coffeecozy 01-16-2015 02:27 AM

Lap quilts are a fun size to work with but for some reason lately I keep starting king size quilts. I start a pattern, play with the fabric and next thing you know I have it all laid out in eq at 110 inches.
I haven't quilted or finished a top that size yet and I am a little worried that I won't enjoy it as much.

lclang 01-16-2015 04:22 AM

I have made all sizes. My smallest is a true miniature about the size of a hot pad, and I have made a king size too and everything in between. Depends on the need or the pattern.

Toni C 01-16-2015 04:27 AM

King and queen both. Have made some twin for the Grands.

Kris P 01-16-2015 04:48 AM

I've made all sizes from King to baby sized. I'm not really of making mini sized, since they would either have to hang on a wall, or be table toppers, etc. That's just not how I decorate. I've found that every time I make a table runner, I give it away. Can't decide if that's a good thing, or not!

jmoore 01-16-2015 04:51 AM

I gift most of my quilts so the size is based on the receiver... Lately it seems I have been making a lot of baby (especially boy) quilts but I'm just finishing a queen for my son and fiancé.

nygal 01-16-2015 05:48 AM

I had made mostly twin size and many wall hanging quilts. I've done two that were full size but I really don't enjoy making them any larger than that. By then I am ready to move on to the next project!!

Bubbie 01-16-2015 05:56 AM

ChesterTheBunny, I love your quilt. You did a wonderful job with that panel in the middle. The colors are great. Thank you for sharing.

reginalovesfabric 01-16-2015 06:22 AM

I make big quilts unless it for a baby

tropit 01-16-2015 06:28 AM

I don't like to make full, K or Q sized quilts. I like to make something to cuddle up on the couch with...bigger than a lap quilt, but a little smaller than a twin.

I am one of these persons that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." For a large quilt, I love 12" blocks, so I got five across/seven down, 2-1/2" sash, 4" border. If I don't want the sashing, I add one more block up and down. For the coverlets, I use my 12" blocks - 3 across/5 down, same goes for the sashing. The coverlet ends up 52x80 and the large quilt is 80x104. That is with the 2-1/2" sash and 4" border. Those are the only two sizes I like to make. My baby quilts are the same size as a coverlet. I like them for on the floor, to go on a youth bed or t win bed.

That's what I do. Edie

What a unique way to add width and length. Your quilt is gorgeous.

Annie68 01-16-2015 07:40 AM

From mug rugs to queen bed size! :)

wendiq 01-16-2015 07:52 AM

Unless I am doing a charity quilt and quilting it myself on my DSM, I usually make something in the twin size. Most others are in the 40x60 range. This way, I can use one width of yardage for the backing.

MargeD 01-16-2015 10:37 AM

I mainly make bed size quilts, although I also like making lap quilts and baby quilts, with an occasional wall quilt in between.

crafty pat 01-16-2015 10:54 AM

I like to make lap size or table toppers and bags because they are much easier to handle with my RA. However I now have several queen size that I have the fabric for that I have to make soon. I also have fabric for a bird lap quilt ready to go.

trolleystation 01-16-2015 11:13 AM

Hooray for graph paper and saving money by figuring out your own patterns.

purplefiend 01-16-2015 12:16 PM

Most of my quilts range in size from 42"x54" to 55"x72". I make charity quilts, my family has plenty of bed sized quilts. I don't like square quilts, much prefer rectangular quilts.

I make larger quilts (king size for DH and myself), somewhat smaller ones for others. I did start with lap quilts and will do that size for charity quilts.

mom-6 01-16-2015 01:48 PM

Typically most of what I do is approximately the size of the fleece throws you can get for about $3 as that is what I've been using for backings.
Lately I've made some larger ones. My latest is 64x80.
