Hi..I'm still new to quilting and I'm in the process of making 9" square blocks for a quilt for our queen bed. They're kind of crazy quilted and all different, in various creams and beiges. I'm going to do enough blocks to not quite cover the top of the bed (to make them a feature - about 20 I think) and then I'll do something different on the side and ends of the quilt.

I want to separate each block with sashing (I think that's the word for it - where you have a strip of fabric separating each block). I am going to do the sashing in a plain cream/beige colour. I'm wondering what would be a suitable width of sashing for blocks of that size. I was thinking 1" but now I'm wondering if that might be a little narrow. I don't want it to look too narrow, but I don't want it looking over wide either. What do you think?

There's a pic of a couple of the blocks if that helps

Thanks

I find that I can only decide on sashing width by actually playing with a few different options and then deciding which look I like best. I usually "audition" sashing using 4 or 6 blocks and lying them out trying different widths of the fabric I plan to use. The good news is that personal preference is the "right" choice. If you like the look then it is perfect.

I don't know about the sashing, but I am definitely drooling over your blocks! They are gorgeous!!!!!!!!

Personally I'd go with 2" sashing and I also go with a little darker color if you want the blocks to pop. If you want the the overall look to be light then go with the beige. I usually "audition" my sashing and cornerstones by laying different fabrics between my blocks you could also do that with different widths.

Beautiful blocks. Be sure and post photos of the finished quilt.

Your blocks are georgeous!! As to sashing size, I think that is kind of a personal choice. After you get a few more blocks made, you could lay them out on a sheet or a yard or so of your sashing fabric, if you have that much, and space them 1" apart, then 1 1/2" apart and so on until you are pleased with the way it looks. It also can depend on the finished size you want your quilt to be, or in your case the size of the top of the bed the quilt is going on. Please post pictures when you finish. Again, your block are very interesting.

I agree with trying different size sashing until you find one you like. BTW your blocks are beautiful.

The blocks are beautiful

The sashing is a personal decision  Do as others suggested do a couple ( you don't need to sew them just lay them out and pin ) and see what you like best

Keep us updated, would love to see how it comes out
