I would like to make a picture quilt of my dog, Gunnar. I want to use Gunnar's actual photo and transform it into a quilt. I can't google how to do it because I don't know the name of the technique. I have attached a photo of a quilt that shows what I want to do. Anyone have links to tutorials on how to make this type of quilt? Book or website recommendations? Thanks!

I think it is called a portrait quilt, or a picture quilt.

I think this might be paper piecing, and very complicated paper piecing at that. I made two small wall hangings - a Westie and a Scottie- as gifts for a friend of mine some years ago using Sharon Malek's patterns. They were hard, but with a lot of patience (and a sharp seam ripper) both my dogs turned out just fine. I'll have to see if I took their pictures.

She's got a lot of dogs and cats, and some other animals on her website. Go check it out.

This can also be done as applique - we have a woman in our guild who does beautiful work like this - applique from pictures -

Looks like thread painting to me...along with applique or PP...
