My sister and I were just at my dad's this past weekend. My mom has been gone for about 2 1/2 years and this weekend, he finally gave us her "good" jewelry. However, my mom always wore jewelry and had a ton of costume stuff. In addition to the drawer full, the wall necklace hanger, she had one of these cabinets full of costume jewelry. We started digging and looking, but it was too overwhelming.

These are called shoe trees..... used in the shoes to store so the leather was kept in shape....

Those are shoe stretchers. We use to use them all the time when we were kids and we go out in the snow without our snowboots on (I hated those boots, just like rain boots).

giannina 10-06-2010 07:19 AM

Shoe stretchers, also keep the wet shoes from deforming

sheila bee 10-06-2010 07:19 AM

looks like shoe stretchers to me ??!!! I have some wooden ones ..thats what i was told !!!!

jprusky 10-06-2010 07:20 AM

These are "shoe trees" you stick the larger end into the toes of the shoes and the smaller end into the heel. This keeps your shoes in a shape.

NanSew 10-06-2010 07:20 AM

Yup, shoe stretchers.

denveremerson 10-06-2010 07:22 AM

Love the cabinet!!!!! I agree with all the others these are shoe stretchers. My grandma had a few of these and also some that resembled these that were used for her snow/rain galoches. (spelling terrible today.)

rhona hodgson 10-06-2010 07:38 AM

Dont u put them in shoes to keep their shape!!!The cabint will be beautiful once u clean it up. :?

patdesign 10-06-2010 07:38 AM

Looks like antique shoe stretchers, or trees to help the pointy toe slippers keep their shape.

elcee 10-06-2010 07:42 AM

I have a cabinet like that my father gave her for Christmas they were married. It is very sentimental to my. I love it.

mjsylvstr 10-06-2010 08:45 AM

they are shoe horns..or stretchers. Used to keep the shoes in shape.

Haven't seen them in years........

craftynell 10-06-2010 08:52 AM

They are for your shoes. They help hold the right fit of the shoe. Sometimes they are called shoe trees or stretchers.

myothsec 10-06-2010 09:02 AM

I may be wrong, but judging from the small size of the heads, I believe these are darning "eggs" like you would use for darning socks, but designed for gloves! I remember my dad using something like these to repair worn fingertips in knitted gloves.
That's why there are two different sizes on the ends.

jean knapp 10-06-2010 09:22 AM

those are old fashioned shoe stretchers. Jean

jridner1 10-06-2010 09:51 AM

I have a sewing chest like this one. I refinished it. It is a great compliment next to my pre-civil war (1850's) bed. Both inherited from relatives.

I have no earthly idea what those tools are, but the sewing cabinet is nearly identical to the one my mom has that she inherited from her mother. The one that comes to ME someday! I hope you plan to restore it to its former glory. I had never seen another one like it until today!

daisydell 10-06-2010 10:16 AM

They are definately shoe trees. I don't even think people use them anymore

Donnamarie 10-06-2010 11:37 AM

They look like shoe stretchers

katyd 10-06-2010 12:33 PM

my first thought was that they were shoe tree stretchers and then someone mentioned darning. maybe they are the forms used to put in a sock when you are darning socks? katy

dorrell ann 10-06-2010 12:56 PM

it looks like shoe stretchers

Calico Grammy 10-06-2010 01:25 PM

THE ITEMS YOU HAVE ARE "SHOE STRETCHERS"!
THEY GO INSIDE YOUR SHOE TO KEEP IT'S SHAPE.
MY GRANDMOTHER ALWAYS KEPT THEM IN HER SHOES!!!

Judie 10-06-2010 01:35 PM

I don't know what they were doing in the sewing cabinet, but those are shoe trees! Probably have some just like them stuck in a pair of dress shoes someplace!!

Lynette-Merlin 10-06-2010 02:05 PM

They are shoe trees. You put them into your shoes when you have taken them off, to keep them in shape.
Lynette

katcincinnati 10-06-2010 02:21 PM

These also keep the shape of your shoes like new. Mymother had these in every pair of her good shoes. I wish I still had hers.

BARBISBOSS 10-06-2010 02:31 PM

Being sewing related I would say they were used for darning socks etc. I got hubby to come and have a look. His opinion is that they were the wieghts used in weaving on a loom.

iapam 10-06-2010 03:26 PM

shoe stretchers

Sew 'N Sew 10-06-2010 05:19 PM

Those are shoe horns, sometimes called shoe trees. Put the big end in the toe of the shoe and the little end at the heel and it keeps the shoes in a nice shape. Shoes are much more casual now so really not no necessary. This dates me!

Lilrain 10-06-2010 05:23 PM

That sewing cabinet looks like a Martha Washington sewing cabinet

barbb baumgardner 10-06-2010 06:24 PM
