What thread do you use for the piecing?

I've been using the same machine quilting thread, but again am an amateur, so looking to see what others use.

You are the best group anywhere. Not a day goes by I don't learn something.

ckcowl 11-01-2013 02:53 AM

I use what ever thread is the right color for what I am working on- often cotton thread from Connecting Threads- or aurifil when machine piecing. I use silk thread most of the time for hand piecing. but what ever thread I have, my machine likes, is the correct size/weight and color for my project is what I use. the only thing you need to take into consideration when choosing which thread to use is....is it good, strong thread? the weight of the thread sometimes matters (the finer the better for precise stitching= heavy thread means needing narrower seams to make up for the space the thread takes up)

Yarn or Fabric 11-01-2013 02:57 AM

I usually uses either offwhite, white or black Connecting Threads or Omni thread. I get it by the cone. I like it. It can be a little linty - I no longer use it for quilting for the same reason - but I do like it well enough. I don't use the white as often as the other two though. I find the offwhite is probably my most used one.

SuzieQuilts 11-01-2013 03:18 AM

I use Star for piecing, and I am not picky about the color. I had purchased a lot of it for FMQ but I have switched to Omni for that, so now I am trying to use it up.

Joset 11-01-2013 03:58 AM

i use 3 ply masterpiece from superior all my machines love it.

happyquiltmom 11-01-2013 04:07 AM

I use Presencia 50 wt. thread, usually in a grey or taupe for piecing. Sometimes black or white, depending on the fabric color. It doesn't have to match perfectly, only blend. Presencia is a long staple Egyptian cotton...minimal lint in the machine. I get it in 500 m spools at the LQS where I work for $5.99 minus my employee discount.

crashnquilt 11-01-2013 04:08 AM

I mostly use Maxi-Lock thread for piecing. I try to get very neutral colors, taupe, dove grey, off white, dark grey and dark blue.

Skittl1321 11-01-2013 04:23 AM

I use Connecting Threads Essential for piecing. It's affordable and runs nicely in my machine.

I've used Aurifil as well, but it's just too expensive for me.

This is what I use too, except I use the 60 weight. Love this brand of thread, and really like a thin thread for piecing!

Stitchnripper 11-01-2013 04:38 AM

I use Coats and Clark, and I hear it is linty, but I've not had problems with it. I don't use computerized machines, though.

Tartan 11-01-2013 04:49 AM

I go with color first but my favourite is Aurifil.

dms 11-01-2013 04:54 AM

I buy Aurafil on sale and like it so much better than CT even though my machine isn't fussy it's just nicer.

ManiacQuilter2 11-01-2013 05:25 AM

I am of the old school and use silk wrapped Mettler.

sewbizgirl 11-01-2013 06:12 AM

I use the same threads I quilt with... mostly A&E Permacore tex 40.

This is me, too. Aurifil is much thinner than CT so it sinks into the seam better for more accurate piecing. Plus it's much less linty than CT thread so I can sew much longer before I have to clean out my machine. And as a bonus...since it is so much thinner, a LOT more fits on the bobbin!

I do like CT thread, though, and often use it for my quilting or decorative stitches. There the thicker CT thread is better because it stays more visible, and while it's lintier than Aurifil it's nothing my machine can't handle. Plus with CT thread prices I can afford to keep a whole rainbow of colors on hand.

Neesie 11-01-2013 06:23 AM

I use Superior So Fine #50, for piecing and quilting. Depending upon the fabric color, I usually use natural or a shade of gray (have light, medium, and dark). I buy it by the small cones.

If I'm top-stitching something, I'll use whatever color looks best, regardless of brand. My machine doesn't seem to care what I use; it's apparently happy with all threads. :)

Quilty-Louise 11-01-2013 06:56 AM

For piecing I use the Connecting Threads.

FOr quilting (I don't have a longarm) I use CT also, but on
my last project (a doll quilt) I used my Floriani embroidery
thread because it has a wonderful sheen to it, I also used
it for my applique stitching on the same project.

LOVED how well it worked for me. I will be doing that again.

mighty 11-01-2013 07:24 AM

I use connecting threads.

Same here. Usually from Connecting Threads or whatever is still good from my days of sewing clothes for my daughters.

loisf 11-01-2013 07:35 AM

Aurifil 50 weight. Just a few colors, grey, camel, white and black, and you can piece anything. It's very fine, so your seams are flatter and more fits on the bobbin. Love it.

AndiR 11-01-2013 07:57 AM

I prefer to use a thinner thread for piecing, such as Superior's Masterpiece (50 wt). For quilting I may go to a little heavier thread so the quilting shows (except when doing SID or tiny backfills, then I will stay with the thinner thread). Using a thinner piecing thread takes up less room in the seam allowance so helps in achieving accurate 1/4" seam allowances.

gutterman 100% cotton, have loved it for years, have never strayed after seeing all the threads magnified recently I can see why. It was so smooth magnified

bearisgray 11-01-2013 08:28 AM

I use Coats & Clark cotton covered polyester Dual Duty - - -GASP - HORRORS!

It works well in my machines, and seems to work well with the fabrics I use. Besides, it's what I have a large supply of.

So far, hasn't cut into the fabric of my 15 y.o. used on the couch quilts. The bindings are starting to fray, but all the seams still look just fine - no fraying or pulling or cutting at any of the seam lines.

Jingle 11-01-2013 09:14 AM

I use whatever I grab. Sometimes C&C, quilting thread or Connecting Thread. I no longer even care what colors. I have been making scrappy quilts and some lights on one and darks on other side. I'm with Bear, I have lots of C&C threads and never cuts through the fabrics. I have been making quilts since 1966 or 1965.

pinkcastle 11-01-2013 09:24 AM

For piecing, I've been using Superior's Masterpiece 50 wt. I would like to try Aurifil someday. For quilting, I use whatever color matches the best.

Bottom Line, taupe color. It disappears into the fabric.

Most of my pretty colors are C&C, as well.

HouseDragon 11-01-2013 12:01 PM

I use Connecting Threads almost all the time.

But I did use Bottom Line when I was sewing a bunch of tiny pieces together that needed to fit together exactly.

purplefiend 11-02-2013 02:42 AM

I use Aurifil,Mettler, Connecting Threads and Gutterman cotton threads. I can even use it with my treadle machines and my Viking Sapphire 875, none of them complain.

quilttiger 11-02-2013 02:57 AM

For quilting, I have been using 50 to 60 wt. for the bobbin and neutral thread, usually 40 weight, for a number of years with success. The brand does not matter.

That's all we can get around here at Walmart. If need a specialty thread I have to order it. I do like Thread connections I don't remember the weight of it. My regular old sewing machines like it also. I do not have a quilting machine. Just 12 working machines.

Bobbielinks 11-02-2013 05:02 AM

For me, it's Coats and Clarks all purpose for piecing and A & E Perma Core for quilting on my lonagram.

lovelyl 11-02-2013 05:16 AM

I use Connecting Threads for piecing and Superior's So Fine #50 for quilting.

juliea9967 11-02-2013 05:18 AM

I use Aurifil always. My machine loves it and so do I. If you have a chance, take a spool of Aurifil and a spool of another cotton thread and compare them. There is a lot more thread on the Aurifil spool than on a spool of another brand the same size. That is because the Aurifil doesn't have all the lint that the other threads have. I think that is one of the reasons my machine loves it so much. I swear my machine even sounds better when I am using Aurifil thread. I only buy 2 colors for piecing. One is a light beige and the other is a dark gray. The only time I use a different brand thread is when I am doing embroidery, and then I use Robison Anton or Isacord poly thread.

Scissor Queen 11-02-2013 05:24 AM

I use Aurafil or Prescencia for piecing. I use any color that will blend with what I'm sewing. Usually the beiges or a pale green for lighter color fabrics and any taupe to brown for darker colors. For quilting I use several different brands and weights depending on if I want the quilting to stand out or blend in.

quiltmom04 11-02-2013 05:38 AM

I used mostly Superior threads "So Fine" and Aurifil. I like that they are thinner, but still considered 50 weight. When you get into threads like Connecting threads, which by the way, I love to quilt with, you have to adjust your 1/4" seam a smidge because the thread takes up moe room in the seam. Is it that much when your piecing 12" blocks together? No, but the accuracy of smaller pieces can be changed, and you just have to test your seam first. Also, be sure to use the same brand of thread throughout your project, because the different weights of thread can throw you off.

MargeD 11-02-2013 07:50 AM

I may be in the minority, however, I use the Coats and Clarks thread the majority of the time, although I also use Mettler threads but I only buy it when it's on sale. When I was doing a lot of crafting & sewing I had just about every color of the rainbow and then some, and since we're now on a very limited budget I will use what I have until it runs out, which may be a while. Having the assorted colors comes in handy when making clothes for my DGD though.

Cecelia363 11-02-2013 07:56 AM

I read here (I think) that Connecting Threads is closing out it's Essential thread line, is this true?

linhawk 11-02-2013 08:25 AM

Coats and Clark Dual Duty XP
Works for me
