I currently am using Mettler thread for piecing and quilting (except one that I used embroidery thread by accident). The Mettler is about $6.70 for a spool, which adds up. Does anyone recommend a thread that is just as good but cheaper? Thanks.

sewnsewer2 12-26-2009 06:27 PM

I use mettler/isacord for emb too.

I just use regular sewing thread to piece with.

sewgray 12-26-2009 06:44 PM

I use Coats and Clarks 100% mercerized cotton in the 1200 yard spools. I buy it at JoAnn's when they have their half price sale. I usually buy several spools in shades of ecru and gray. I've heard other people say they don't like C&C but it works just fine for me.

Clothfiend 12-26-2009 07:41 PM

I really like Robinson Anton thread. I buy it on-line in 3,000 yd spools (50 wt)cotton. It runs me about $4.33 per 1,000 yds. It does not lint like most other cotton threads I've used. I use it to piece and quilt.

BellaBoo 12-26-2009 07:45 PM

I like Robinson Anton thread and have lot of the big cones. I use Connecting Threads Essentials thread the most. It's on sale now too so I stocked up on the cones for piecing. The thread sets are very nice and my machine likes it.

Does that Essential thread lint much? It's very reasonable in the large cones.

Connecting Threads has good thread and their prices are awesome.

Wow, I just looked at connecting threads. I cannot believe how much cheaper it is and you get more than twice on a spool than I was getting before.

Don't forget to sign up for their specials. They have some great ones!! :D

Bobbinwinder 12-26-2009 09:44 PM

When linting became a real issue for me, I tried Presencia and loved it...thin, strong, and virtually lintless.

Maksi 12-27-2009 02:52 AM

I like yli-thread for quilting, for patching I use everything thats on sale.

mic-pa 12-27-2009 03:51 AM

For piecing and/or sewing I use Gutterman and wait until Joann's has there 50% off to buy it. A lot of people like Connecting Threads thread and I bought a box of that in assorted colors. My machine does not like that thread so I have given up using it. When I embroider I buy Janome thread from my dealer.

diannemc 12-27-2009 04:26 AM

I use the coats and clark mainly cause I can get it at Wal-mart..I don't live close to a fabric store so I have to get what I can find...I have a question on the subject of thread? What do you use when you are doing a hand embroidery quilt...? I have been just using regular DMC thread..but before I get too far on it just wanted to know if that is ok?

barnbum 12-27-2009 05:44 AM

I'm a Gutermann girl. Or should I say my machine is a Gutermann gal? No other thread keeps my machine happy. If lint is an issue--stick to polyester. The one who sold me my Babylock said she won't let cotton threads on her machines when folks come for classes--too linty.

Bevanger 12-27-2009 07:05 AM

i've used coats and clark for years and years. i've never had trouble with it

LindaR 12-27-2009 07:20 AM

I have been using the Connecting Threads thread for piecing and on the quilting machine and I have had no problems with it...

b.zang 12-27-2009 07:25 AM

I was taught to use cotton thread on cotton fabric.
It's getting harder and harder to find around here!
I bought some Mettler mercerized cotton. It works fine in my machine, but seems quite thick.

renee765 12-27-2009 07:36 AM

I use Coats & Clark thread consistently. I have tried the better threads but my machine doesn't seem to appreciate them.

Candela59 12-27-2009 09:11 AM

I have hand quilted several items with the Mettler and I really like it. But I was also wondering what other people use for hand quilting? It seems to me that it is hard to find thread that is specifically for hand quilting...just curious :?:

My LQS carries YLI made specifically for hand quilting -- it's just lovely to use. The only problem is they only carry it in white or off white. I guess I'll have to see if anyone else carries different colors... :D

sewjoyce 12-27-2009 09:15 AM

Maybe I'll have to shop here when I want colors :D Has anyone used this site???

Nope! But I'm about to pop over there and take a look :)

I use YLI silk thread for hand applique. I highly recommend this site for price and quick delivery. The lady who runs it is very nice too. She can get any color made in spools or cones.

BellaBoo 12-27-2009 09:51 AM

Presencia floss does not bleed ever. DMC floss some colors will bleed or rub off on the fabric. Everyone has some DMC floss laying around and it's used the most for hand embroidery but test the strong colors first to be sure there is no bleeding. I have used fine crochet thread for embroidery and I noticed some decorative quilting thread would be good embroidery thread but there isn't the selection like in floss colors.

BellaBoo 12-27-2009 09:54 AM

The only thread that will not lint one teeny tiny piece of lint is silk thread. If you haven't tried machine quilting or handwork using silk then you have to try it. I won't use any other to hand appliqué. Connecting Threads has silk applique thread kit on sale. It's the best price I've seen in a long time.

That is all I've ever used also. I like it. If you are happy with it that's what matters.

I have used this site to order thread and been very satisfied with my purchases.

littlehud 12-27-2009 07:46 PM

I love Connecting Threads thread. Great thread at a wonderful price.

I use Connecting Threads Essential threads exclusively. I also bought the cone size for piecing. I love their thread and my sewing machines do, too.

LindaR 12-28-2009 06:40 AM

I use mettler 60 and aurifil exclusively for applique. it just disappears in the fabric

brushandthimble 12-29-2009 06:06 AM

I use Aurifil to piece with, it is pricy but you get alot on the spool and the bobbin holds alot also as it is a very thin thread. I hand applique with YLI silk, it disappears into the fabric. I machine quilt mainly using King Tut, I also like the YLI varigated for machine quilting.

FinelyFabricated 12-29-2009 06:13 AM

DMC thread has a tenancy to bleed especially since they changed the laws on types of dyes that can be used. It's the only brand of thread I use for cross stitching. I always soak it in clean dish water in little custard cups and then air dry it on a hanger after rinsing it thoroughly. So I'd wash it before I put the effort into a quilt.
Hint: I put the number band next to the little bowl and then on the hanger so I know which color is which.

It holds up very well I have dresser scarves my mother made before she was married the fabrics getting worn, but the thread is still beautiful.

brushandthimble 12-29-2009 06:17 AM

I found out the hard way that DMC will bleed:(
I made a red work abc for a baby gift and when removing my markings for the quilting the red did bleed.

brendadawg 12-29-2009 08:17 AM

When I bought my Babylock sewing/embroidery machine, the lady who taught the free classes said we should never use C&C thread because that's the "lintiest" of all threads. She had pics of different brands close up which showed the amount of "untwisting" with each brand. I had always used that in my old sewing machine; but now I have a mental block about that when I buy thread. I, too, like the Robison-Anton.

Yes, I get colors of aurifil thread that our quilt shop doesn't carry. Aurifil is my choice to piece with. It's just a bit more expensive than C&C but when you consider it has more than 3 times as much thread on a spool as C&C, and it's much smoother, the cost is worth it.

QBeth 12-29-2009 10:35 AM

Great discussion! Currently I'm using two machines, an older Baby Lock and a new Sapphire Husqvarna. I was also told, way back when, not to use C&C but my Baby Lock loves it. In fact, I sometimes have trouble with more expensive threads.
However, with my Husqvarna, I use Madeira almost exclusively because, once again, the dealer told me not to use C&C and, given the price I paid for the Husqvarna (pricey for me!), I use the better thread.
Guess its a matter of what the machine likes and what you can afford. I should also add that I'm diligent about having my machines cleaned professionally once a year.

Anna O 12-29-2009 11:11 AM

I use Coats & Clark. It's polyester, but I like it better than the expensive cottons.

wraez 12-29-2009 11:49 AM

I have been using Connecting Threads for years, love it and I don't find it to lint BUT I do use Superior threads Bottom Line exclusively in my bobbin, so not much lint in the bobbin area or under the plate.

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA

Shorebird 12-29-2009 12:15 PM

Do you ever have a problem with linting with Connecting Threads cotton spools?

juneeloonee 12-29-2009 12:32 PM

I, too, use the 1200 yard Coats n Clark Egyptian thread from Joann's. My machine balks at the usual Dual Duty Coats n Clark by stripping the thread through the tension but the Egyptian thread works beautifully. I especially like that it gives off very little lint while sewing. I, also, use my coupons for neutral colors when I don't need the coupon for something else.
