I am thinking of making an embroidery quilt that calls for white tone on tone fabrics. The pattern is called "Winter Wonderland" by Crabapple Hill Studio. So what are tone on tone prints? Or what do you suggest for the embroidery fabric for that design? Would muslin work?

Tone on Tone or TOT is fabric that has color on color that is very close in value. It gives a quilt "texture" and depth.

White on white is a TOT fabric. The picture of your avatar usese TOT fabrics as well. :D

Tone on tone is for example, a white fabric with a white design printed on it. It can be any color, but the most popular and easy to find are white and beige. I would not use muslin for machine embroidery (I assume that is what you are doing) because it shrinks. Also, muslin is not a great quality material. For machine embroidery I want my fabric to be the best quality I can afford. Plain white works great for me.

Tone on tone is a fabric that is printed with a design of basically the same color as the fabric, such as white stars on white fabric, or white leaves on white fabric. It is usually very pretty fabric. I love to use it for background fabrics. It's nice because there's a very subtle design in the fabric.

This is for hand embroidery.

I wouldn't use a tone on tone for embroidery because some of the printed designs are so thick for the needle to go through. A plain or mottled fabric would be easier to work with.

Great picture Marsye. Some of the thicker parts of the white are hard for the needle to go through; that's the reason I wouldn't use a tone on tone for embroidery (either by hand or machine).

Moda marbles are my absolutely most favorite fabric. We used to have a fabric store in town that carried every one of that line and I was in there all the time. They went out of business in their store and just do on-line selling now, and I miss them a lot.
