Here's what I'd do ... extend your Irish chain blocks into the border to complete the diamond of the chain. Then the rest of the border would be just the plain white background .... take a look at this quilt and you'll see what I mean but am not explaining well ...........

I also agree with QuiltE & think that is the way to go or a white border. It is such a busy quilt, I feel a piano key border would be too much. It is an outstanding quilt - looks like a ton of work with lovely results.

Have you thought about not putting on a border? Just use a solid color for the binding.
Any pieced border will take away from the pieced blocks of the quilt.
If you need a border to get the quilt larger, I would use a solid border so you do not take away from the pieced blocks.
I don't think a piano key border is the answer, it will be too busy for this pattern. :)

Wow..that is so beautiful. I love it. If you add a white border....I'd still add a small border of one of the colors or a fabric that has all the colors but a very tiny border of it.

Beautiful ..I wish I could do something like this..mine is never that nice ....again beautiful .....

I like QuiltE's suggestion, too. I would also think about a very thin dark color to stop or narrow white, narrow dark, small but slightly larger outter border.

Oh, not black. Pick a favorite! This is such a lovely piece that even just a white border would be stunning. Follow your "gut instincts". On the other hand we just love giving our opinions!

WOW! What a gorgeous quilt! I don't think a piano key border would work as well as a plain border, maybe pick your favorite color in the quilt and use that? I would put on a white border, then a colored border, then maybe another white border. The quilt is colorful, and beautiful, but I think a piano border would be too busy. That is just my humble opinion. Truly a wonderful quilt you have made, either way!

Omigosh is correct - that quilt is Gorgeous!!!

IMHO - the simpler the better for the border. A small colored border to frame and a light (maybe the background) on the outside. Although I love piano pieced borders and have used them several times, I think that it would detract from the visual impact of the blocks.

If I did not do a simple border, I would try to bring some part of the design of the block outside to the border. Here is one I did. If you wanted a touch of color in the outer border you could float small squares of color in the background or in a wider border of background float a small nine patch (the size of the one on them inside your setting squares) to bring color and continuity.

Good luck - it is always so hard - but when something strikes you - you will know!!

Piano key would make it too busy. White border with maybe a corner nine patch in each of four corners. You did a beautiful job.

What a happy quilt!! It is a pleasure to see! How about doing your border in various lengths of your main colors in strips. No small pieces at all. Then you could finish it with a white border. The color strip border would be your frame and keep your eye looking into the quilt, then if you have more strips left, make the binding a happy colorful binding it would stand out against the white border. I am sure whatever you choose it will still be a beauty!
