Masking tape will leave a residue, but will those white little round labels used for pricing at thrift sales also leave a residue over time? I'm trying to mark on each piece of fabric its size, but not sure the best way of doing this. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for all your insightful answers. :)

I use a safety pin and piece of paper:)
|
painters tape will not leave a residue.
i use post=its to mark mine |
I either write in the selvage or use a 1" x 1" post it & staple it to selvage
|
What about individual baggies with sizes written on it and place all the same size together?
|
They sell pins with letters on them Nancy's notions I believe
|
The "super sticky" post it notes stick OK, as long as you don't tug them around too much. But I'll watch this topic, for sure

Edited to add - on my fabric tags, when I mark the length I also add WOF or the exact width if not full. |
Very nice ideas...I never thought of marking my fabric...I just keep a notebook/journal and use a baseball card holder in my journal to keep a swatch of fabric with name and dimensions.

If you are talking about marking fabrics for long term storage, I wonder if even painters tape would leave a residue?
I think price stickers would leave a residue, as well as labels. :D:D:D |
I use post it notes and I have not had a residue problem.
|
I use little 1/4 x 1/2 " white or neon stickers for marking rows. Since I'm going to start assembling right away, they are removed when I'm done placing them. I have never stored fabric with a sticker on it though, so I don't know what it would do for any length of time. Probably wash right out.
|
I staple a 2x2 piece of cardstock to the selvedge with size, price, and any other info needed.
|
I use post-its, sometimes using a pin. If it is a large piece, I use the quilt-tacking gun and attach the paper that way.

safety pin and paper...never falls apart

watch it with postit notes as some can run if they get wet! I had this happen to a piece of my fabric. I put a piece of paper with a pin in the selvages now.

fOR A quilt I make a label and attach to the back of the quilt. Since I can't make my labels by embroidery, I use a permanent Ink pen, write info on. When that is done, turn edges under and Wonder Under it to back of quilt.
For identification on blocks, I cut out a cardboard piece and attach like a tag for a present. |
What about for bargello quilts ... marking the columns? What works best for those, especially the tiny ones?
|
I used those extra address labels that I seem to get tons of. They won't take a lot of moving around, but work good. Just mark over your name with a dark magic marker.
|
Wonder if putting the sticky on the BACK side of the fabric would be okay? I have seen tape leave yucky residue that is impossible to get off.
I'm thinking writing with a dark lead pencil would be better than using ink - even though it's harder to see. Sometimes inks run or bleed. |

Thanks for all the good ideas! I like marking mine with a Sharpie on the wrong side of the selvage, then turning that corner out so I can spot it easily.
|
blue painters tape!
|
Freezer paper. Cut the size you need, make your note or comment and press onto the fabric.

I use baggies and write on the baggie or I pin a piece of paper on the strips with the size on the paper.

I wrapped my fabric around the plastic sign board pieces to go on the shelf and at the same time wrote on the board the dimensions of the fabric and any other info I thought might come in handy with a pencil. That way I can erase and reuse when the fabric is gone. Also If I use part of the fabric then I can write what is left.

I'd rather just sit there at the machine pulling my hair out at 2:00 in the morning because I put the wrong piece in place and trimmed it to fit now I am short on the last piece.
Solution- make the project smaller. :) |
I either used a post it note and pin it to the fabric or I cut up an index card, use a hole punch to put two holes on top and then run a straight pin through the holes.
|
I use blank white mailing address labels and cut them to put on my material. They do not leave any sticky residue. They work great.
