What is the Web's latest Quilting Craze?

I know in the past it has been Dear Jane, The Farmer's Wife, Stack and Wack, OBW and etc. I was just wondering, wanting to start something new and different. On anoter note, is there something you always wanted to make?

omaluvs2quilt 01-31-2012 11:20 AM

I don't know, but I'm definitely up for something different! I really want to do an artsy quilt, but washable for a bed. I love the art quilts, but I'm more practical and like all my quilts to be loved & used. Can't wait to hear everyones great ideas!

BellaBoo 01-31-2012 11:24 AM

I think Civil War quilt patterns are very popular now. I've noticed a lot of Civil War BOM and quilt kits are in most shops.

breezyquilts 01-31-2012 11:24 AM

I am doing the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge. There is a new instructor each month with a tutorial to help us refine our machine quilting skills Last I looked there are at least 700 quilters involved. Fun!! There is a link on my blog in the left hand column. I am enjoying seeing everyone's practice blocks!

oksewglad 01-31-2012 11:26 AM

Hi Rosy! The QB is doing a Pony Club sew along now similar to the FWS.
I see a lot of "liberated" quilting showing up especially in the younger crowd. Guess you are no stranger to that genre.
I think the Civil War influence will remain strong until "end" of the CW commemorations.
Upcycling fabrics is also "new".
The winter issue of "Quilt Trends"
http://www.fabrictrends.com/issues/latestissue.shtml
I notice the color choices of the younger quilters--they favor the retro European fabric designs over the repro American influences.
Just my 2 cents.

RST 01-31-2012 11:27 AM

The Swoon blocks are very trendy -- not really hard, but they look complicated, and depending on fabric choices and placement, you get some interesting variations.

I'm kind of the opposite. I avoid whatever the latest craze is. I get sick of seeing the same quilt over and over.

Jackie Spencer 01-31-2012 02:03 PM

I have been seeing alot about the book and patterns "Sylvia's Wedding Sampler" There are numerous web sites about it and lots of pictures of the quilts being made, several groups have been formed, sharing tips and some exchanging blocks. It is a world wide thing, with groups in France and Germany and many other countries. There are 140 patterns in the book. A few of my friends and myself have bought the book (Amazon) and are making it. The patterns are beautiful, Im making mine in pastels. Pinks, lav, soft greens, yellow, aqua and blue.

I love Civil War and hope it stays around for a long time.I think scrap quilts from our stashes due to the economy is very popular right now.I am trying to use my stash of which I have a lot, that I was able to acquire when I worked and my DH and I traveled. Now that he is gone and I am retired I have to watch what I spend.I still only buy my fabric from QS.I am not going to spend a long time on a quilt to have it fall apart in a few years. Also good quality thread is important.I have seen people spend $8.00 plus a yard and then sew it with a .50 cent spool of thread.I check sales a lot.

doodledo 01-31-2012 04:31 PM

I dont keep up with trends. But I love this topic, I have got to get my act together and do some of these suggestions!

lfstamper 01-31-2012 04:34 PM

My local group and I are doing a round robin. Should be fun since every one will pick something different. You may want to sign up on here for one of those.

Rosyhf 01-31-2012 04:36 PM

Thank you ladies. I was trying to find something for a class and wanted to do something different. Civil War is a good idea and I already have one made from the Barbara Brackman book. I was searching Block Base and found lots of blocks to be made with scraps to form a new look. I will still look around and see.

jcrow 01-31-2012 04:38 PM

I always check out Jenny Doan's YouTube shows. She always has new blocks and also has new ways of doing old blocks. Also on YouTube I found a new and great way of making flying geese that actually turn out great. Go to YouTube and in the search engine type in: Flying geese with one seam. It's really changed how my quilts look. And a man is the person who is showing how to do this. I think that is so cool.

I did see that quilt a couple years ago and found the blocks in Block Base. I am not good with many little blocks lol. I tried Dear Jane and The Farmer's Wife and ended up only making 15 from each and incooperating then into two other quits with other odd blocks from my collection. I did post the quilts on here some time ago.

I have noticed, even in the most recent American Quilter from AQS, that scrap quilts are getting a lot of attention. I can only assume it's due the backlash from rising cotton fabric prices and the quilters's need to use stash more often.

I agree Jan, I will probaby do something with scraps. The drunkards path comes to mind. Make a strada and cut out the parts and put them together your way. It would give a whole different look and be colorful as well.

Rosyhf 01-31-2012 05:00 PM

Another block that comes to mind is the double fan ( Bock Base) many colorful scraps can be used with a white background like the old quilts.

Thanks for posting this, Martha - I just joined!!
I set a goal this year of improving my FMQ techniques and this will be wonderful! Of course, I'm scared right off the bat with feathers being the second month's technique - couldn't they have done that later in the year???? SHEESH!!! Well, here I go!!!

dixie_fried 02-01-2012 05:25 AM

Just about everything posted at Modern quilt guild makes my heart race. But, I think I'm one of those "Younger quilters" mentioned a few posts back. I love bright colors, lots of contrast, and some negative space in a quilt.

Here is the 100 days of modern quilts link: http://themodernquiltguild.com/

Cacklinghen 02-01-2012 06:10 AM

I like the civil war blocks

zennia 02-01-2012 06:48 AM

I am hooked on civil war but lately have been excited over the "100 Day od Modern Quilts". Different ideas.

It is the link dixie-fried posted.

kateyb 02-01-2012 07:37 AM

I think that some popular quilting designs are regional. I make table toppers or runners when I want to try a new block. Then if I really like it I can do a bigger quilt later. For example I did one turkey tracks block - never again. It went into a Thanksgiving quilt for my mom.
I personally like making stack and whack fan quilts. So much fun for me.
Right now I am trying to concentrate on UFO's and my scrap stash.
I have also been having fun with a quilting design I came up with. So far I have made 8 and they are all different. Depends on where you do different cuts and arrangement of blocks.
I'm not really crazy about sampler quilts.

Thanks for sharing; I like looking. I think liberated quilts and the asymmetrical look complements the types of fabrics you like.

LadyElisabeth 02-01-2012 10:00 AM

I've been doing contained crazy squares lately and then putting them in vests. Eventually, when I find time, I will do a quilt using the crazy squares.

Dakota Girl 02-01-2012 10:38 AM

We have been talking about scrap quilts lately. I just started a spiderweb quilt with my scraps....a lot of fun and easy.
Missouri Star has a new tout about how to make one.

Lori S 02-01-2012 10:48 AM

Just my personal comment .. its seems like verything old is "new" again , from civil war, scrappies , string foundations, crazy quilts. Some done in real scraps, period fabrics, others in new fabrics. But a the most common thread to most is the use of more fabrics in a single quilt... Lots and lots of colors/shades , print variety etc.
I think in tough times people want colors in their lives ! If you look at the reproduction fabrics of the depression area , they were quite colorful for the time.

The Flying Geese was so cool I had to stop what I was doing and make one. So easy. I'm taking it to church tonight to show my friends. Thanks a million.

I don't know what the pattern of the year is, but I am definitely looking for Revolutionary War fabrics and patterns to make a quilt for my son, the history buff. Anyone have ideas?

Checked out the Swoon Block.......What a great block. Got to try that.

penski 02-01-2012 02:17 PM

my to do list is so long i will never carch up with the "now" things !! i just make what i am in the mood to do

KathyPhillips 02-01-2012 03:19 PM

I have the Sylvia's Wedding Sampler. I haven't started it yet, but the blocks are beautiful. I read almost all of Jennifer C.'s novels. I really like the first ones. Didn't realize the book and patterns were so popular around the world!! Jackie, your colors for the Sylvia's Wedding Sampler sound beautiful!! I guess we will have a new acronym, SWS!!

I plan to make a, "Not your Grandmother's Tumbling Blocks." It only uses triangles and is strip pieced. Pattern is from Marci Baker.

Yes, I did, too! I watched the YouTube with Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson. I could not inagine how I could make a flying geese block with only 1 seam! But it does work.

Thanks so much for the link to Modern Quilt Guild! I love many of the "modern" quilts and this site will be a great way to spend some time. Recently I've been liking clean lines, clear colors, and lots of white. Good to see that other folks like them too!

Pam

Wow - your question brought up lots of interesting ideas and links - I'm happy you asked!

Old hen 02-01-2012 05:30 PM

My friend and I are working on "Cotton Club" It's a beauty, BOM, available online, also.

I love traditional quilts, but, I find that the modern aesthetic really inspires me. I got so inspired that I designed my own modern quilt to *hopefully* enter in their contest. I dyed my own fabric, planned the layout, sewed it with no directions, and I'm quilting it on my little old domestic machine.
Liberated, indeed!

Here's a link that may get you started:

http://www.historyofquilts.com/colonial.html

I think there might be some RW repros made by either Jo Morton or Judie Rothermal--Williamsburg, Yorktown. Their websites might give you better answers. I would Google "RW fabric reproductions" and see what you come up with. Good luck.

I would love to know more about the "Dear Jane" quilts. Sampler or what? Thanks Teresa

Not for the faint of heart, the blocks are 4"! Here's a link:
