What will we think of next?

Soap for marking, glue for basting, vodka for pressing, used dryer sheets for foundations...! What could be next? :) I'd love something I could use cat hair for...I have an abundant supply!

Who knew!!!!!

toverly 10-13-2013 12:08 PM

Stitchripper, that is a hoot! My husband has always said something should be done with it, after he combs the cat. I may have to put the book in his stocking this year.

Stitchnripper 10-13-2013 12:25 PM

:D The "google" will provide endless hours of entertainment!!!! That wasn't the only site!!

AngeliaNR 10-13-2013 01:31 PM

Maybe we could use it for batting?

HouseDragon 10-13-2013 01:43 PM

I'm in love with Otto! :)

yngldy 10-13-2013 02:39 PM

Long ago I knew some ladies that would spin their dog's hair into yarn and make hats, scarves, etc. with it to wear.

Peckish 10-13-2013 03:07 PM

Lol I saw that book "Crafting With Cat Hair: Cute Handicrafts To Make With Your Cat" back when it was first published. I remember thinking it was a little creepy.

Jan in VA 10-13-2013 04:43 PM

Indeed, who knew. I guess there's a use for everything!

JBeamer 10-13-2013 09:43 PM

Batting! That's what I thought too. Hope is doesn't catch on too much or we'll have a lot of bald cats.

Peckish 10-13-2013 11:50 PM

Whoops - too late!! :D

funny-but other than the dryer sheets=none of you (what's next) items are new---my great-grandmother used soap slivers to mark when making clothes 100 years ago. most of the (new?) concepts are really old concepts that were ---tossed aside for 'new & improved' ways- by people who wanted to use more 'modern' ways to do things...the dryer sheets weren't available 'back in the day' but interfacing-a lot like them- were & was used---it just wasn't 'smelly'. so, if you want to know '''what's next''' read a little history...some tool from the Victorian age will probably be hitting the market as a new way. :)

misspriss 10-14-2013 03:33 AM

It wouold be fine if you aren't allergic to cats. Who will know????

Kris P 10-14-2013 04:06 AM

I wouldn't say I'm allergic to our cats, but I certainly get itchy nose and watery eyes when I groom them, or vacuum their favorite places to sleep. I can't imagine turning their fur into yarn and knitting it. I'd be a sneezing mess!

Cat hair and dog hair - you mean those items AREN'T intended for use in surface design? And here all this time I thought that I was making such good use of found objects! LOL

Lavada 10-14-2013 05:06 AM

no cats in my house but would have a blast with dog hair lol

Inez Ruth 10-14-2013 05:23 AM

I think the things you listed in the original post have been used for years and years. The soap marking thing probably for scores of years. New isn't always better.

Txkolibri 10-14-2013 05:43 AM

Love it sense of humor always helps !!!

spunky 10-14-2013 05:46 AM

I am thinking of using my Pomerainian's hair in a landscape quilt. Little balls of fur on a distant hill will be a herd of sheep

Mornigstar 10-14-2013 05:53 AM

Years ago I researched and read 2 dogs of the world are able to be used in garments --meaning the hair doesn't smell when wet , also durable etc. I saved hair from my Samoyed dog for almost 6 years. Had it spun into yarn then I knit myself a shawl that I use a few times a yr. Usually on New Years eve with a dress. I had a book showing beautiful garments to make but the lady doing my spinning couldn't do more. I still have enough hair left it stuffs a
12 " square cushion. These both are washable and no animals ever pay any attention to me when I am around them.

Comment that the spinner suggested using Samoyed hair with others but I wanted it plain but apparently then it was harder to spin into yarn. Mine is very soft and an off -white color.

sewmerry 10-14-2013 05:54 AM

I have seen Pincushions filled with hair..... why not cat hair????

BuzzinBumble 10-14-2013 06:20 AM

Funny post and funny replies! You all have a great sense of humor!

My mother was a weaver and wove a small rug with dog hair. When it was humid, it smelled like wet dog and you couldn't keep the animals off it. When I sold her house it went with it!

That is so funny!!!

Snooze2978 10-14-2013 07:17 AM

As I garden and have rabbits and squirrels that think the gardens are for their enjoyment, I spread my cat hair around the plants as it seems to keep them from munching on them. The kitties don't mind offering their hair either as that means they get brushed more often in the Spring and Summer time. Its a win-win for all involved.............:-)

True; perhaps the title of the thread should have been "What will we re-think of next?". :)

Jingle 10-14-2013 10:09 AM

With three cats I have plenty of hair. I'm always sweeping it up. My Chihuahua has hair about 1/2" long.

chris_quilts 10-14-2013 10:59 AM

I always tell recipients of fabric gifts that the gifts contain lots of natural fibers because my two furry pests (cats this time) are attracted to fabric gifts. I do wash them after completing construction but it doesn't hurt to let people know about the natural fibers.

I used to have a fuzzy kitty named Moe. One time I told my family that when Moe started shedding we should collect all that fur and knit clothing from it. They looked at me like I was crazy! But then I just told them, "What? Haven't you every heard of Moe-hair sweaters?!"

Ha! :)

One of my cats is named Poly (he's a polydactyl). I guess if I used his hair in cushions, we would have poly-stuffed pillows. :)

Definitely a Japanese thing! I've noticed they link kind of odd things like that, just like they have "Coffee Maids" (think anime female characters serving coffee in maid outfits). I saw them in Tokyo. :)

My DH would say a cat makes a good pincushion.

Oh no ... cat's hair for batting? I just can't, no way, never.

I saw one program year's ago that the lady used milk weed fluff as batting. I thought to myself, "I would have to be desperate to do that.

Edited to say... I loved the fun chatter of this thread. Made me LOL!
