What will you never do again in your sewing/quilting room?

Oh my, today I entered my sewing room with a full cup of coffee. In there my floor is my design wall, hehe. And yes, for my current quilt top I did put the finished blocks on the floor. U know what happened? I think so! I stumbled over the door sill, and the coffee met every single block! So what did I learned? Never do tiny steps while enter my sewing room!

Another thing I learned is: Never walk barefoot in a sewing room if there is a chance you can hit a pin with your blank feet.

Is there anything you learned? Anything you will never do again?

Neesie 10-01-2013 01:06 PM

Well, ya know how when a paper towel is stuck to the bottom of a cup, you can sometimes unstick it (one-handed), by quickly jerking the cup upward? I've learned to not do that, when the cup contains hot tea. I would say, "in my sewing area," but am hoping I've learned not to do it, period. :p At least my tea only splashed onto the floor and me.

TrueColors 10-01-2013 01:07 PM

Sometimes I wonder if I'll actually sew in there....haha. I think I spend more time and money shopping & planning my projects than actually working on them. And now, I've discovered this board, and am spending hours reading and replying instead of doing something.

TrueColors 10-01-2013 01:09 PM

Hey Nokatha - I just looked at when you joined and how many posts you've made. I joined just a few days ago and this will make 32 posts. See--I am telling the truth!

zozee 10-01-2013 01:12 PM

Ruh-roh. What an awful feeling that must've been. I have been tempted to take coffee in there, but am such a klutz that I make myself drink only water (or sometimes white wine) when I'm in there. If I want to live dangerously, I go to the kitchen for coffee and steer clear of anything that looks like a victim.

owlvamp 10-01-2013 01:22 PM

Um nope I sew at my dining room table right now.

tessagin 10-01-2013 01:28 PM

Nothing goes in my sewing room to eat or drink with the exception of bottled water or a tall glass of ice water. I do keep a 32 oz. bottle of water for my iron. The office is a whole nuther thing. I sometimes eat lunch in the office and have coffee in the morning while at the computer. Again my design wall is portable. I can put it on a couple hangers and hang it up on my window. I sometimes use my bed (qn sz). I have too much dog hair and don't want to jeapordize having a lot of extra fur.

aronel 10-01-2013 01:39 PM

I have stopped making my sewing room into an office, I made all the bills out for 41 years of my marriage, my husband retired last year and now it is his turn. I would get so many papers and receipts all over my desk that I couldn't find my sewing machine. I actually hated to go in there. No more! I'm actually excited!!!

fabric lover 10-01-2013 01:53 PM

I almost did the same as you did LOL. I took a cup of hot cocoa to my sewing machine because 'I was in a hurry' , put it some distance from the machine, but when turning the fabric...... do I need to say more ROFL. Although I wasn't laughing at the time !

How funny! I did all the bill paying for the first 25 years, then told my husband it was time for a trade - he got the checkbook and I got the remote. He took the checkbook and actually did a good job with it, but I still didn't get the remote. In a few more years it will be 50, and then it's my turn to take back the accounting. At least very little of it is done with the checkbook anymore.

Diannia 10-01-2013 03:01 PM

Hummm...mine is totally different. We put new carpet in my quilt studio (formerly the formal living room). I found a beautiful textured carpet I loved...in a dark choc brown...never again! It shows every bit of lint, string and cat hair. Foolish, foolish, foolish!

GingerK 10-01-2013 03:59 PM

Well, something I keep TRYING not to do anymore, is to alter/mend clothing. But then DD comes home with a pair of pants that needs taking in or DSIL (love when he does this 'cause his mom can sew too) will ask if I can fix a pocket or hem his new pants, or DH will come in with his old work jeans that are more patches than jeans and ask for just one more fix....I guess I'm a push-over but it does give me a warm feeling even while I quietly fume about the time it takes away from 'real' sewing.

If I ever lose a needle or pin, I just ask DH to walk thru the room. He'll find it every time--in his foot!!

aborning 10-01-2013 04:15 PM

I will never again cut minky fabric in my sewing room--or in any room in my house!

AngeliaNR 10-01-2013 04:32 PM

"What's aborning doing?"

"Oh, she's outside cutting her minky."

:)

franc36 10-01-2013 04:51 PM

I will never again get spray starch on my sewing room floor. I slipped on spray starch once, pulled lots of muscles and broke a finger. Now, I am very, very careful with spray starch.

Dolphyngyrl 10-01-2013 05:34 PM

Sew the same seam wrong like 4 times. Yes I did that. Leave pin cushion out for kitty cats (Stepping on pins-not fun).

AmyFreeMotionQuilting 10-01-2013 06:36 PM

I will never put my computer up inbetween my two sewing machines again! Stitch, stitch, surf, surf, click, stitch, surf, click, surf.......

BellaBoo 10-01-2013 07:01 PM

I will not make room for a bed for someone to sleep in my sewing room.

Lori S 10-01-2013 07:20 PM

I won't let non-quilters into my sewing room... they just don't understand all the fabric!

AliKat 10-01-2013 10:04 PM

I decided to move the ironing board to the adjacent living room. I also put my cutting station in the living room. No drinks allowed in the studio! It is good to get up and walk around. I only drink water when I am at my sewing/quilting and it stays in the living room also.

Can you tell I live alone? When non-sewing/quilting friends come over I put away the ironing board and roll the cutting station into my studio. I have a 2 bedroom townhome and the little bedroom is my studio. Works for me.

petthefabric 10-01-2013 10:58 PM

Put an air matress on the floor of my sewing room.
Let DH store anything in there. Pretty soon he's taking over more and more. Our bedroom already is stacked high with papers, files, etc. since the office is in it.

Jo Cypher 10-02-2013 04:10 AM

Be very careful with hand sensing needles. DO NOT LOSE.

alikigirl 10-02-2013 04:38 AM

I will never spray baste again - in any room in the house. I was spraying with the quilt on the design wall, and had laid down old sheets on the floor, but got adhesive about 10 feet behind me (maybe the AC was on and blew it around). And since my shoes stuck to the sheet on the floor, the sheet got all bunched up and adhesive got on the floor, too. What a mess, I sure learned a lesson.

DonnaPBradshaw 10-02-2013 04:57 AM

Well, I don't drink coffee so this wouldn't ever happen to me, but one thing I wish I would do is remember where all my projects are stored! I've labeled the containers which has helped but I'm still having to go through my drawers to find what I want. So that makes life more complicated when you know you have a certain project and can't find it!

Wintersewer 10-02-2013 06:49 AM

Suggest to my husband that he cut a hole with a power tool IN my sewing room. I bought a new large bed sewing machine and asked my husband to enlarge the hole in the quilting table he had made me. I said, "Just cut in in here, it can't make too much mess." WRONG, WRONG!!! The new machine is odd shaped and fitting required many small cuts...UGH!!! There was fine dust ALL OVER....tool 8 hours of cleaning to get it all because my sewing room is lined with shelves. Carrying it out to the garage would have been MUCH easier!

GailG 10-02-2013 06:54 AM

well ---if I EVER get my mess purged and tidied up, I will NEVER let is get this way again. Yeah, right!

Haha, I'm with you, TrueColors! I'm a big procrastinator, um, I mean planner...

cherrio 10-02-2013 07:27 AM

haha. I said the same thing. I thought it was just because it was a new thing (the QB) and the "newness" would wear off; I mean really, how much can you talk about sewing and quilting?! and yet almost EVERYDAY I grab a coffee and sit and read, chuckle, oogle the pictures and soak up the never ending tips and helpful suggestions here. The folks here have really boosted my confidence and given me ideas that have led to projects and quilts aplenty. Now if I could get past the FMQ terror-I could graduate into a "real quilter feeling". :D

cherrio 10-02-2013 07:36 AM

yes!! I have 1 Rubbermaid tub and my daughter called me a hoarder! I wish I could AFFORD to hoard some. I told her that when I can afford to stack some on a shelf then she can laugh and toss the "H" word around. kids . . .

joyce blint 10-02-2013 07:44 AM

I'll never let fabric and stuff get piled this high again. It's so bad (disorganized) that I can't concentrate to work on a
project. Must start cleaning today, wish someone was here to help me. Will never let it get this bad again until NEXT time!

Kitsie 10-02-2013 08:41 AM

Good one, Angelia!

I will never allow my big, black, constantly shedding dog into my sewing room/glass studio again. It's bad enough that I can't keep my pure white cat out if the door is open, but BLACK and WHITE fur all over EVERYTHING . . . more than I can handle! My room is the only place my DH never goes unless he's invited in to view something on the design wall. That means, none of his mess makes it into my space! YEAH!!!!! :)

nhweaver 10-02-2013 09:04 AM

A couple of things I will never do again:

Take the smaller spare bedroom as my sewing room. I squeezed the queen sized bed for visitor's into a my old sewing nook, a tiny bedroom/office. why make them too comfortable?

Store anything that is not sewing related in the closet or in the room. Clothes, waders, toys in the closet - a project for when I have time.

quiltmau 10-02-2013 09:11 AM

I have had blue carpet, black carpet, creme carpet, green carpet-ALL show dog/cat hair and lint, strings and fluff. Even the hard wood floors show stuff. Only cure-no pets-no sewing-no living!

Ain't gonna happen!!!!

I also do the bills-it is easier for us as my DH travels and I use the internet for bill paying. They come in, I record them, and then I file. Never leave the computer desk and the best part-no more mess!!

I'm with you-FMQ scares me to death. Lessons coming up.

Iraxy 10-02-2013 09:33 AM

Thankfully this can never happen again as I again have my own room and have learned my lesson!

I will never let my DH in my quilting area with a computer saying " I won't take up much room, it's only to pay bills." A desk, file cabinet, shredder, computer and related paper mess later, I should have just said "No, get on out, to your shop area, or your garage, or the RV building, not here!"

crafty pat 10-02-2013 09:49 AM

I used to do all my crafts and painting in my sewing room. I have carpet in there and was painting a Christmas decoration when something slipped and I threw up my hand and hit a bottle of paint and all over the carpet it went. Where the bottle fell it was a big pool. I was never able to get it all out. All my painting supplies left that room that day never to return.

gramquilter2 10-02-2013 10:27 AM

Carpet, no, no, no, NONE!

Jingle 10-02-2013 12:02 PM

No miss haps yet. I gladly pay the bills and keep up the check book. I had to start paying the bills and balancing the checkbook in the 60s. My Husband had it so messed up I had to learn how to do it. He doesn't even care how much is in the account. He just charges small purchases and uses his credit card. It is up to me to make it all work.
