What would you do with a cracker?
I have been given a package of Hoffman Bali Crackers - 40 ten inch squares in exquisite berry and green colored batiks. What pattern would you consider for a quilt? Thanks so much for your suggestions.

Have you seen Missouri Star Quilt Co.'s double slice layer cake tutorial? It makes a very pretty quilt.

I would like a pattern that will use 30-40 of the 10 inch squares without having to buy additional fabric for the cover. Thanks |
I think "crackers" is simply the Hoffman manufacturer Bali version of the "layer cake". They are both 10" squares. Bali has crackers and snaps (5" squares).
The books I mentioned above provide the same patterns for 10" squares and 5" squares. For the 10" squares, the patterns typically require two packs of layer cakes. I don't have the books here now, so I can't tell how many 5" squares the smaller quilts take. I am thinking you could make the smaller quilts by cutting your 10" squares into 4-5" squares, but not sure. |

I can think of many, many patterns that would be great with a cream batik added in. What patterns do you favor? |
Eat it with a lump of cheese.? I'd look up missorie star videos for 10 inch squares for ideas.

as a moderator, i scanned the titles and hit upon 'cracker' right away. i was wondering how crackers related to quilting LOL
i love learning something new every day on the board. |
I would pet them and love them and save them for appliqued flowers and leaves.

You could just send it to me - lol.
On a more serious note - Here is one I recently did with a Bali Cracker - it is called Syncopated Rhythm. This is the center and this is the border I chose . |
You could make an awesome Dresden Plate quilt out of that mixture.

I am a bit of a newbie - yet I do love a good challenge and would be game to try anything. Currently, i am practicing paper piercing. ( wont be cutting up those Bali squares yet for pp blocks! LOL!)
My likes run very eclectic - from vintage to modern designs. I am never board. |
Wonder what happened to calling things by mundane names such as:
10 inch squares 5 inch squares 2.5 inch wide strips 1.5 inch wide strips |

Here is a 10 minute block made with luscious fabric. I made one with batiks, but it isn't quilted yet. IMHO a lovely quilt that really shows off the fabric. http://tamarackshack.blogspot.com/20...ute-block.html

Tee hee. Wondered" the same------------but the "cute" names give us something to drive family crazy with. Dear, I'm going out for a couple layer cakes and 4 jelly rolls". So hubby has coffee ready when you get back?
|
I was thinking, put peanut butter on it, lol....learned something new today.
|
Let's see... a cracker divided in four makes four 5" charms squares. If you did that I would highly recommend Pat Speth's book called Nickel quilts - loads of great ideas.
Loved some of the suggestions here. |
I thought layer cake, charm square and jelly roll were industry wide! I'm disappointed in them for not being consistent!
|
Oh I would love to try the Chevron quilt with them... look at Missouri star for the tute on it...
|
LOL Have ya seen the window pane 9 patch tutorial ? Its for 5" squares, but you could make it for 10" if you like. I just watched it and thought .. hmmm I have a daughter who is a pistol to quilt for (one minute she likes BRIGHT, the next minute Oh no mom I want all DARK !LOL), so I thought I am mixing the both!LOL after seeing this one ..
|
Cheese on crackers, couldn't pass that one up. HAHAHA.
Learning something new all the time. You have already gotten some good ideas. |
OK! There I go again. I thought put some peanut butter on them. Never heard of Crackers in that manner. Fabric sounds yummy, though! Show us what you came up with when you're done. How about a photo of it.

I just made a beautiful quilt using batik 10 inch squares. I needed a simple but pretty quilt for my DGS. I took the 10 inch squares and laid them out so they looked just perfect in a 6 x 8 grid (yes, I added two extra-42). I used black sashing and used other batiks for cornerstones and then a border that went with the batiks. It is at the long arm quilters right now but I can assure you it is absolutely stunning. I used another brand of batiks than Hoffman but the colors were fantastic.

I like to use the 10" squares to make half square triangles, then from HST you can make so many different designs: pinwheels, chevron.... To easily make the HSTs, put 2 of your 10" squares with right sides together, matching up raw edges. Make sure you have a good contrast in color and design. Sew around all 4 sides using your 1/4" seam allowance. Now cut your finished square diagonally both ways, cutting a big "x" through your square. Now you have 4 HSTs! Have fun, whatever you do!!!

They would make a beautiful Bali Wedding Star from Judy Neimeyer
|
Missouri quilt just did a new tutorial on the disappearing 9 patch with charms. You could use this also with the crackers and even cut them done to 5 inch squares.
|
Crackers is new to me also. I guess it's just a sale ploy and sounds cute.
|
I was thinking the same thing as mythreesons Missouri has an easy chevron with layer cakes.."Crackers"
