What would you do next?

1 Attachment(s)
I have 1/2 of this Bargello quilt done, not following a pattern. I am trying to decide how I continue this design. I really like what I have ...you will have to turn your head to look at the design, as I had to take the picture sideways to get it all...but time to figure out where I go next.

I will get out my graph paper and colored pencils next, but which how would you continue the design? If I "go up" to match what I have, it may just look like a big W. Of course, that might be okay...

Any suggestions are welcome!! Thanks.

Dina

That looks pretty cool. Sorry I haven't attempted this pattern and while ! think it might be cool to make it look like a heart tracing monitor print out, I'm pretty sure others will have great ideas to share with you. Good luck!

DebraK 04-10-2014 07:06 AM

Sheilz, that's funny. that was the first thing to come to my mind as well.

Sewnoma 04-10-2014 07:54 AM

I don't follow a pattern when I make bargellos, I just kind of go for it. I would probably just keep zigging and zagging up and down at random intervals....probably not all that helpful, am I?!?

It looks great though, you have a really nice gradient in your colors. Makes me think of coffee and chocolate. Yum! Just keep doing what you've been doing, it's totally working!

Hi Dina

First, what width do you want to make this quilt?? I LIKE what you have done so far. Why not just start reversing using the center of your 2nd shorter point. Then if you need additional width, you can add from the two edges maybe working into a curve out to the edge. HOPE this helps. You are certainly on the right track !!! :)

Yes, this does help. It will be twice this wide, and then I will have borders...I just like borders. I like this idea and will play with it. That would make it symmetrical, and I would like that.

I will keep posting, asking for opinions, I am sure. :)

Never made one, although I have a book with bargello patterns. Picking out fabrics is what throws me.

You are off to a good start.

JustAbitCrazy 04-10-2014 03:44 PM

I wouldn't want it to be perfectly symmetrical, or to look like a big "W". I would make the pattern go up just a bit, then down kind of far, then back up alot---very far. (If that makes sense, lol!)

Actually that is what my artist son said. :) Leaning towards that. He has a good eye.

Nice job on your quilt. I love the colors.

Thanks. I am actually doing this a bit backwards, I think. I made a wall hanging very similar to this and decided to make a quilt that "matched" it. It makes more sense to make a quilt and then make a wall hanging from the scraps...but I think I can make this work.

I didn't use a pattern for my wall hanging either. When I did that, I said I would never do that again, that a pattern was sooooo much easier to do. And here I am doing it again because I couldn't find a pattern that matched what I thought I wanted, and I do have my wall hanging. I have done a few "curvy" Bargellos and wanted to do a "pointy" one. Finally I decided you must not really need a pattern for the pointy ones.

It's mainly that a quilt for a bed is a lot larger than a wall hanging!! :)

I would have to balance it . So the big point on the small side and small point on large side.
Hope you understand.

Vat 04-11-2014 03:38 AM

I would start on the left side and go backward to match the 1/2 you have already made.

Kitsie 04-11-2014 07:10 AM

I dunno! But had to remark that I really love the polka-dot fabric in it! That is really unique!

I like this idea if you are okay with its not being symmetrical. Otherwise, you should do the mirror image--symmetry is necessary for some quilters--nothing wrong with that!
It's looking great--I'm agog that you are doing it without a pattern!
Tell Hot Rod hello for me--I'm sure he is glad that this one is now wide enough to sit on properly. :)

Hot Rod says "Hi" back. He does approve of the quilt so far. I am taking a few days off of quilting to think about what I want next. Plus, we may be trading our bed in for a King size, and THAT may really take some rethinking as the quilt is for our bedroom!!

Thanks. I had to go look at my quilt again, as I didn't remember polka-dots, but that sure is what they look like. Actually those are daisies, my favorite flower, which is why I selected that fabric, plus I already had it and didn't need to buy that shade of brown.

I like what you've done so far, just follow your heart and the quilt will lead the way.

BettyGee 04-11-2014 02:42 PM

I agree with Dina' s son. You are on the right track and what a glorious quilt you will have.

youngduncan 04-12-2014 02:16 AM

I'm just weird enough to think that the design could be continued as it is, then add a nice border to frame it. Many years ago, when my eyes could see the holes in the canvas, I really enjoyed doing bargello needlepoint. Designs which continued up and/or down the full width of a canvas were intriguing, and they certainly did not have to be a centered design. The final word is this: it's your quilt -- and a wonderful one -- so do what your eye and your heart are telling you to do with this. It should turn out to be a masterpiece!!

Yes this is what I would try to do. A very nice bargello!

jitkaau 04-12-2014 04:58 AM

If you continued to descend with the peaks it could look like mountains, forests or cascading water...we always look for something figurative I guess. I think it will look equally nice if you make your W shape as the colours are nicely blended and not jarring.

katesnanna 04-12-2014 06:22 AM

It looks great and as you started without a pattern I think you should let the quilt tell you where it wants to go. I'm working on my first Bargello.

roserips 04-12-2014 08:04 AM

What if you use your picture and play with cutting and pasting two side by side then you could cut things apart rearrange and see before you do. At least that is where I would start since you have a beautiful beginning.

Never made a bargello and can't believe you just are doing it w/o a pattern! What you have looks great!

Can't help with suggestions for your questions; but I can tell you I love what you've done so far.

I actually did this, and it has helped. I took a few days off from it and will dive in tomorrow and see what I do. :)
