Howdy y'all :-D

I was given this adorable piece of antique fabric. Isn't it just the cutest thing? But obviously, there's nowhere near enough of it to make a quilt with. Maybe a wall hanging or something? Should I fussy cut around each cute little print and mount it onto something or other, or what? Any ideas? I really would like to make SOMETHING with it, but don't have any clue exactly what. Help!

How big is the piece you have?

Maybe use it as a wide band in one of those wide band/strip quilts?

Use it as the center strip/band and coordinate for the rest of the pieces.

As you said, fussy cutting is probably your best bet when you don't have a lot of it. The blocks wouldn't all need to be the same size/shape. And you could build them out with borders or even log cabin style. Another possibility would be D9P, if you can fussy cut all the same shape/size.

The possibilities are endless! Have fun and we'll look forward to seeing it.

I have a piece I've been considering doing the same with ... I've marked it with chalk a few times for the different possibilities, so that I'll get the best use and waste the least.

What about fussy cutting it and using it in the corners of a quilt? Make a quilt with alot of colors pulled from this fabric and then use some sort of pattern in just the corner of the borders and then use a solid for the rest of the borders. I think they are called "cornerstones." A good block might be a churn dash with this fabric in the center. Inside the quilt, you could do a series of smaller churn dash blocks with the other colors. You could also use some of it on the back of the quilt just to echo the idea from the front.

I would use the fabric like it was a cheater panel and border it out to the size you want. Maybe using some reto reproduction fabric. Just love your piece of fabric:)

Don't rush it. I just had some fabric for almost a year before I found the perfect use for it. Gather ideas, keep it in mind when looking at any pattern/project. The perfect project will find you!
Love the fabric!

snipforfun 07-31-2011 01:36 PM

How about a pillowcase?

Unfortunately, if this was in my possession, I wouldn't cut it for anything! I have several vintage fabrics and I can't bring myself to use them for anything. I like to get them out to look at and pet but then I refold them and put them back on the shelf. I'm of no help to you!!!!

I like this idea. Love the fabric!

Ditto!!! It would look great as the center with borders all around

AFQSinc 07-31-2011 03:51 PM

I have a pattern called Easy Breezy that uses a 1 1/3 yard piece (I think that is for the crib size, you can also make a throw size) as a center panel and then it has a border of scrappy squares. That might be an idea depending on large your piece is. But a pattern like this could easily be adapted to any size center panel you want. Here is a link:

That being said - I would still take my time in deciding. No need to rush into anything. Very cute fabric.

dragonflyxlx 07-31-2011 03:53 PM

I love fussy cutting then building the design to highlight the fussy cut pieces.

quiltmouse 07-31-2011 03:56 PM

aww! sew cute!

luvspaper 07-31-2011 04:54 PM

I'd go with it as a full horizontal width, no cutting. then I would add other horizontal borders to get the height and then add framing borders.

Phannie1 07-31-2011 05:00 PM

Oh, yes! Fussy Cut with the different sizes at a varied placement location. I think it would be a cute child's quilt. the colors are wonderful.. I will have to start looking for this a antique shops.

bebe 07-31-2011 05:07 PM

use as centers to my blocks or as a border with solid color blks

oatw13 07-31-2011 06:29 PM

That is super cute! I would hold onto it until the perfect idea hit me.

Some log cabin type blocks would be cute.

sueisallaboutquilts 07-31-2011 06:29 PM

I love that fabric!!!!!!! There's something about vintage fabric that speaks to me. I love the almost primitive (compared to nowadays) pictures.
That's adorable :)

sewcrafty 08-01-2011 03:19 AM

I don't know if I could cut it. I've fussy cut things before and you lose a lot of what is next to it if you know what I mean, so it ends with you not having too many blocks to play with.

If you have a favorite little girl in your life, maybe a couple of pillows for a bed. Put a cute little ruffle around and a different color back and maybe you'd get 2 pillows out of it.

SueDor 08-01-2011 03:42 AM

Yes, I would fussy cut each of those pictures and alternate with solid color!

CAJAMK 08-01-2011 03:45 AM

Yes, that was my first thought fussy cut!

msmariab5 08-01-2011 04:15 AM

How about a retro apron?

The piece is very small. It's only about 30" wide and maybe 12" to 14" tall. There's not a selvedge to be seen anywhere. So even though there are several of the little pictures in it, there's not much width/length to it at all.

I agree

Potentially that's a huge piece when you start fussy cutting in that you can get a lot of pieces from it. Sometimes the prints lend themselves very well to it, and sometimes they merge all too much to fussy cut easily. Yours looks like it may work out well.

You could do a child's quilt or a lovely small lap quilt for yourself! Try the chalk route and see what works best before cutting.

MaryAnnMc 08-01-2011 05:06 AM

I think you should send it to me!!!! OK, just kidding... really...

Fussy cutting would lose to much of this adorable fabric. I agree, wait and let it stew for a while, but definitely use it as close to whole as possible. It's absolutely charming.

That's what I would do and I would go easy on the colors for the borders. Lots of different fabrics in different colors for the borders would detract from this sweet piece.

Annaleehunter 08-01-2011 05:10 AM

Use as a center!

Sanpot 08-01-2011 05:11 AM

I made a children's quilt by cutting as many 'squares' round the patterns as I could, not worrying what size they were, then arranged them in three columns approximately the same length/width with various coloured sashing between to even the columns and widths up, followed by borders that brought all the colours together.
With such a delightful fabric, you want to get as much out of it as possible.
Good luck.

grannyp70 08-01-2011 05:25 AM

Now that is the cuteist fabric, I think if it were me I would fussy cut it and make different size blocks and go from there.

isnthatodd 08-01-2011 05:29 AM

I would leave it whole and frame it with borders!

Normacharlie 08-01-2011 05:39 AM

Make a great quilt for a little girl with fussy cuts.

Jennifer22206 08-01-2011 05:41 AM

I wouldn't cut it. I'd add borders to it to get the size you want. I think if you cut it, it'd ruin the integrity of the piece and the gorgeous pattern.

Personally, I'd want to show it off as much as I could!

Nancy in Louisiana 08-01-2011 05:44 AM

Use individual motifs for applique.

Tweety2911 08-01-2011 05:45 AM

I think there would be too much waste if you fussy cut it. Either use it horizontally and build up the top and bottom with lots of different designs such as flying geese on top/bottom, then a layer of HST's and built it until you like the size of the quilt to add borders all around. Or put it away until inspiration strikes you:-)

Annaquilts 08-01-2011 05:49 AM

Too cute! I wouldn't want to cut it.

Carol Ann 08-01-2011 05:54 AM

Can you make a few panels out of it then choose bright colors for borders around the panels? You could also cut out individually and put borders to make them into squares. You could also make a panel with borders as a wall piece. I hope you show pictures when you complete your project.

Happy "Sewing"!!!

Lavada 08-01-2011 05:58 AM

pretty fabric but i have no ideas so sorry can't help

gramarraine 08-01-2011 06:10 AM

How about fussy cutting and then use an alternate block with coordinating colors. You could use a pinwheel or snoball block or something like that. It is very cute fabric, I agree with others don't get in a hurry.
