Her words were " find a pattern that you can teach me to do" Im not feeling there will be much we in this quilt. This girl has never sewn anything ,oh I forgot about the stuffed bear she made for my first daughter23 years ago.Which was the sweetest thing. big round tummy, eyes uneven, just the cutest. We all love her dearly but,no sewing skills to speak of.But she can run a chain saw just not a sewing machine.Warm wishes may not work with the fabric she picked there is not a strong pattern on one that I think would work.But I was just thinking quilting has been the one thing we do not share so it may be time I SHARE with my lifelong friend.

Half square triangles in a 9 patch -- very versatile, with lots of layouts possible. A great beginner quilt.

There is a pattern called "Six Halves Make A Whole" that requires 6 half yard cuts that might work for you. I have not made it but have the pattern and it look pretty easy.

Double Irish Chain! Add a main color of beige and wammo! You've got a great first quilt. That was my first quilt in "Quilting 101" class. I made mine with shades of moss green and it's a very relaxing quilt. There's plenty of practice with butting seams and chain piecing. Have one class a week where you teach her a step at a time and say "Ok, now go home and make 16 of these and 20 of these. My class was either a 6 or 8 week class. I learned A LOT about seams.
BTW, I'm also very good with a chain saw! Don't even take off my wedding rings! Love the power!!! Rah Rah Rah...grunted in the tone of Tim the Tool Man Taylor!!! |
I agree with the creams and ecru idea, but I would hesitate to add other colors without asking first, she may not want other colors.

If it were being done by you, I'd suggest trying Labyrynth Walk in the brown range...haven't seen it done in that color, but was thinking that might be fun to try even before I saw this post. Just need to make sure you have good contrast with fabrics you choose from her selection.

Terry Atkinson has a lovely simple pattern, Fire Escape, that makes a great quilt even if you're not thrilled with the fabric.
