What would you do?

I am working on a toddler's quilt for a good friend who is the 1 yr old baby's grandfather. He chose the colors and wanted a simple Rail Fence. I decided that it needed a little pizzazz and added the pinwheels. The photo shows only 4 of possibly 42 blocks. If I make it 6 by 7 blocks it will lose the bottom pinwheel. Would you make it square (50" by 50" with border) or oblong (50" by 58" with border)? I am planning on using the blue for a 2" border.

Love it, so bright and cheery. I'd go square 50 x 50
If it's suppose to be for his crib.......I would make it the longer measurements.
It will be cute either way. |
I love it. Can't wait to see it finished
Sunnie this is so fantastic and perfect looking.
I'm thinking at 1 year he would want to
carry it around with him so square would be great. |
I would make it oblong. It would fit his bed longer.
I love the bright colors and the pop of the pinwheel you added!
I would do a square as that would keep everything even and the pinwheel centered. That was a clever centerpiece. I also love the bright happy colors. Well done!
I love the pin wheel in the middle and I also love how big you made the rail fences. Love bright colors. Either way you choose will be perfect. But if for a crib make it longer that's just me. He will treasure it !!
What sizes is your strips and triangles? I just love it. |
I saw a very similar scrappy version somewhere (possibly here on the QB.)
The stips are 2 1/2" and I added a 2 1/2" square to the end of the yellow. LOL Owlvamp, but you should have enough 2 1/2" stips to make a very scrappy version. I sewed the red, blue & green into long strips then cut them at 8 1/2" then added the yellow (cut at 8 1/2" with the blue square added and trimmed to 1/4") so that each block is 8 1/2" square. |
I'd go with the 50x58 as those little ones grow fast!
Love, love, love this adaptation. Sew cute and a toddler would love it.
Great colors! ** I'd say make it square** :)
very innovative and colorful! Great quilt for a toddler.
Beautiful, bright and wonderful! I would choose making it longer.

I did a similar design and all of the pinwheels are in the middle. Mine has 36 blocks plus the border.

Great quilt, either way. Yu could ask the grandpa his opinion as he probably has in mind how the child will use it, bed or drag around. If no preference I would vote for square, then as he gets older he could use it across the bottom of a twin bed with another blanket in one of the solid colors and then still carry it around.
I wouldn't base my decision on using it in a crib. It isn't safe to have blankets in cribs with small children because of smothering. A friend's little girl who was 10 months old at the time smothered with a blanket in a crib when a baby sitter was watching her. Very tragic. The child is more likely to use the quilt on the floor to lay/play on, drag it around and snuggle with it. Either shape is fine but I would probably go with square to keep the pattern in tact. Really like the pinwheels.
50x50 would be best I think.
If you want to make it square but not cut off the pinwheels, why not extend them into the boarder? Just add HST where the need to be. Cute either way. I don't think a toddler would mind them being cut off.
I don't like square baby quilts. I would do an oblong and then it can be used in a crib for a long time.
I love this. Your colors are great and the pinwheel really adds to it. I would probably go with a square blanket.
Love it, my vote is for square.
did you layout the blocks? I think that losing the pinwheel on the top and bottom row would be OK. You are not going to have any pinwheel on the edges anyway even if you put a whole block in it. An oblong quilt will let the child grow into it and be able to use it to cover-up with when they are older.
I love it. Either way would be great!!!!
I would make it square. The baby's parents may already have a theme for his bedding, in which case that quilt won't be used in the crib.
Either way, it'll be loved! |
WOW, I love what the pinwheel does for this pattern! If it was me, I'd make it a size that would not "lose" the bottom pinwheel.
I don't think loosing the bottom pin wheel would detract from the beauty of your quilt at all, especially if all your pinwheels have that continuation of color like the yellow above. However if you feel like its to distracting I would go with making it longer that way it fits a bed, drag it around, or it can be displayed. I love your block and I look forward to seeing the finished quilt.
cute idea, I'd go with the longer size, much easier to wrap up a child and not be skimpy
I don't know what I would do but sure love what you have done.
Adding the pinwheels to the rail fence really makes the block pop. I'm slightly confused - if what you're showing is the block, why would you lose the pinwheels? Just curious. It will be an awesome baby quilt.
This quilt is wonderful!!!! I love the color and the pinwheel makes it POP! I would go oblong so it can be cherished as a napping quilt for many years to come - how special this is!!!
I take it back - I like it Sqare better

You know I just drew this up in EQ7 and think Billi is right - I think it is distracting with incomplete pinwheels. I am adding this to my bucket list, I really like it!
That's going to be a stunner. No advice about the size or anything else.
Like the quilt and the addition of the pin wheel is so much fun but, imho, is that size a bit big for a yearling? I would make it a little smaller so the little could enjoy it more. Just my opinion.

Love your colors !! I would make it square....
I like it too.
Love it. You're right about the pinwheel. Can't answer your other question.
