Yesterday, I took the plunge. I have been wanting to clean out my stash of fabrics that I know now I will never use. I am up to box three, and still more to sort. Now before any of you droll   , let me tell you that 98% of this fabric is leftovers from when I worked in a drapery workroom....so it's drapery weight cottons and a lot of silks....and a good deal of stretchy t-shirt fabric from the long ago days when I used to sew clothing for my children. I am just so tired of having all this bulk around that I cannot manage, and will never do anything with. I was thinking of just taking these boxes to the local half-way house run thrift store, but wanted y'alls input before I do anything. Any ideas?

You could Craigslist it, even for free. Somebody would be there in a minute.
upholstery/drapery fabric = tote bags and pillows
knit fabric = cut in strips, crochet or braid rugs. silk = silk crazy quilts!! JMHO - also, why not offer it for sale on QB? bet it would find a good home. |
I think I would try to give it to a local women's shelter. They might be able to use it.

Craigslist, free cycle, women's shelter, retirement home, school home ec dept, other organizations that may use the fabric to make things to donate.
Or post some here for sale. |
You can offer it on Freecycle. Someone would come to your house to pick it up. If it is weighing you down, get rid of it. Only keep things in life that make you happy.
I would also suggest Craig's list (selling for an inexpensive price/ or free) and freecycle. Then someone who is searching for that type of fabric can get what they want. Sometimes these things don't sell at thrift stores.
You know, I bought some silk for my daughter's bustier for Renessaince and it cost me $15 a yard.
Many of the Nursing Homes and Assistant Living welcome clean fabric. They said they always need a variety of fabric for the small crafts residents make for their craft shows.
Drapery fabric is great for tablerunners. Silk would be great for silk quilts, would love to have enough silk to make one. |

Our sewing machine repair shop (run by Amish) take fabric as donations..they make quilts for the poor.
sew, sew, sew
Use it up! Sounds like you got alot of ideas now!And with the cost of fabric going up & up, sounds like you have a gold mine = )
I'd probably keep it..lol..but your local Girl Scouts might like it..years ago when I was a leader..we were' always looking for fabric..because sewing is part of one of their badges !
Oh yes, put it on here. We will help you use it up and post the results. WOW!

Give it away or sell if for cheap.... Others will use it. |
If you realistically aren't going to use this? good for you for wanting to give it away :D:D:D
i would give it to girl scouts or 4H for their sewing programs
Most quilt guilds make charity quilts. You could find a quilt guild near you and donate it.
I would be interested in the home decor fabric! PM me with pricing etc. Thanks.
Schools, especially elementary or those that still teach home ec.
Churches sunday school department Post it here. Most of the members here do more than just quilt and may be able to use what you have :) For instance, I would be interested in the silkies... |
Many churches make ministry quilts for shelters, cancer cernters or nursing homes. They are always looking for free fabric so you might check your local churces.
what to do, what to do...?
Donate, if you don't feel up to listing it for sale.
If you donate it to a thrift store, you might want to give it to an independent one (if you have such a thing) instead of a big one like Goodwill - their prices have gone way up, and those who truly need it may no longer be able to afford it.
sew the bits & pieces of tshirt knits together for pet beds for humane society or your veterinarian.
only keep what really makes you happy... craigslist the rest for a great price... or frecycle, or a dontation....

My sister's church group makes quilts for homeless people out of whatever textiles they can. Maybe there is a group like that in your area.
Some people love to quilt with Silk. I would think that would sell well on the QB. I would sell what I could and donate or freecycle what is left. Ann in TN
I would find someone that would make something for others with it. Maybe the t-shirt material could be used to make sheets or something, etc. If you just want it gone, take it to goodwill, then someone may post on here about what a steal the found ;)
Heck... just realized you are in Texas. I think you are way further north than me (austin area).
I would 'love' to take that stuff off your hands, LOL! |
I'd either Craigslist it or Freecycle it. If you prefer not to do either of those, I'd make some calls to see where it would be accepted for use. A few phone calls made before you start running around with it in your car, can make a huge difference. Don't move it till you KNOW where it's going!

I know its a lot, but could give it to people that make things for the needy, and those other groups...sometimes the thrift stores don't accept things like that. but to be sure you could find groups that would love to get them in your area.
and y'know we all would love to take them off your hands(hehehehe) |
