Mine would have to be a digital camera.I like to set my squares together, then take 3-4 pics & transfer to computer. Amazing how the pics shows things my eyes don't notice. From wrong shades of color,to wavy strips & blocks needing moved etc.
Maybe we get so caught up in "git er done", we don't see the trees in the forest. At least that's my excuse :-)

cjomomma 01-05-2011 04:38 AM

I keep my camera at my sewing desk too. I do exactly as you do. :)

justwannaquilt 01-05-2011 05:09 AM

I do the same thing. I have a Canon with a view finder and sometimes I look through the view finder and see where stuff needs to be fixed. I save myself the time and fix it before I snap the picture.

However my biggest help while quilting would probably be my husband. Not only is he REALLY good at picking out fabric but he works really hard so I can quilt whenever I want day or night since I don't have to work. Well I am sure thats the not REAL reason he works so hard. lol but hey it works for us.

That is so sweet! My hubby knows he should be interested and say "that's nice honey" when I show him what I did, but that's about it. I think he's jealous that I have so much passion for something actually. And just last night he asked me how much time I spent looking at this board! lol!

dkabasketlady 01-05-2011 07:22 AM

My camera too in fact my hubby just bought me a new one for Christmas. My other helper is my cat Tia(in my Avatar) she makes alot of my design decisions for me even though I do question her judgement at times, lol!!!

sherriequilts 01-05-2011 07:35 AM

my digital camera too.
I lav out the blocks and take a picture. Then pick up everything by rows and I have a photo to follow.
I also use a flannel-backed tablecloth when laying out the quilt and often leave everything there. Just roll it up.

Deborah12687 01-05-2011 07:49 AM

My scanner and printer are one of my biggest helpers. My camera has issues and trying to save up for a new one. I won't go cheap this time want all the bells and whistles. I do nature photography and want to start showing my images on the net.

pab58 01-05-2011 08:32 AM

Mine is in my avatar!! She always has an opinion and is constantly helping me with my layouts!!!

Mine too. Her name is Brooke. Nothing goes together well if she isn't there.

tutty 01-05-2011 09:04 AM

My friend Barbara !!! lol I like to use my binoculars the opposite way and check out my layout before sewing together ! And yes I usually move things around a bit ! Try it it is great aid.

BellaBoo 01-05-2011 09:06 AM

I think my design wall is my biggest helper. It's big enough to layout blocks for a king size quilt. I use the computer/printer and camera more then I ever thought I would in quilting.

mollymct 01-05-2011 11:44 AM

I like to use my camera that way, too. I need to rig up a design wall, though. I also like to lay out my fabric pieces/blocks on a table and eye them/rearrange (for days!) before making decisions.

Another amazing tip from this fabulous forum.
Thanks
Annie

I have one as well! My daughter's cat Lexi thinks she has to help with EVERYTHING in my craft room. My mom got me a picture for my craft area of a cat resting all over quilting material, tape measures....wrong color cat, but she reminds me of her!

tmg 01-06-2011 03:40 AM

I never thought about using my camera. I guess I NEED to go out and buy one to put with my sewing stuff. Thanks ya'll.

Same for me. I never thought of the camera as a quilting tool till I started on this board. I also have my DD's MIL who is a good critic and has a good eye for color. I found crooked seams through the camera too.

I am lucky enough to have a little Canon with the view finder too. I have never considered using it that way. Thanks.

I mention lucky because they are no longer making the inexpensive digitals with the view finder. I don't understand that at all!

quilter68 01-06-2011 04:30 AM

TIME!

juliea9967 01-06-2011 05:57 AM

I use my camera, too, but I have got to say that my best quilt helper is my Accuquilt GO. It just amazes me how all my pieces go together so perfectly, and how all my blocks come out just the right size. And, now I love the "cutting" part, too.

dkabasketlady----Is your kitty a Himalayan? Used to have one and looked so very much like your. I surely miss my Tuffy. Marge L.

I too have 3 excellent kitty helpers, they do everything from laying on the fabric as I try to cut it (to keep it from moving of course) to "smoothing" it as I lay it out to sandwich it to quality control checking for comfortablity

Mkotch 01-06-2011 07:32 AM

I love Tiger Tape for making half-square triangles. A friend to shop with for a complementary piece of fabric is also a god-send!

grandme26 01-06-2011 07:59 AM

It sounds like I need to start taking pictures and get a kitty cat to help with quilting.

Definately IMHO a kitty is a necessity for quilting

I love my ping pong table for my workspace.

feffertim 01-06-2011 09:10 AM

I use my design wall too, could not be without it. Really helps when you are trying out different designs

harleygirl 01-06-2011 09:26 AM

my quilting buudy in otis orchards wa. she is a great help when i would rather look at the pictures than read the directions when the brain is not computing..........lol

QUILT4JOY 01-06-2011 02:35 PM

Thanks Dear quilters. ;) I asked for and just got my 1st digital camera for Xmas. Canon SD1300IS. I'm still just trying to understand it. The Owners Manual is on computer and I'm old enough that I still do better with a paper copy to refer to. Especially the page where all the symbols are explained. Waiting to get my daughter to sit down with me for some practice runs and getting photos into the computer.

What I great idea - never even thought of using my digital camera for that

krmc2000 01-06-2011 04:34 PM

When I was finishing a sea turtle 3D quilt for my niece-vodka!!

ljorange 01-06-2011 04:53 PM

I scan my blocks and then put them into my Print Artist program. I can turn and move the blocks and create the the way the entire quilt will look.

Lucy90 01-06-2011 05:03 PM

Design wall and camera. With my camera I take pictures as the quilt is being made and then done. I have a folder in my computer for each quilt I made. It is nice to look back. Design wall is also great because you can leave it up and come back to it and 99% of the time I make a change, something I didn't see before. Great tool

Definitely my quilter tester, she has passed this one as AOK

juliea9967 01-06-2011 06:39 PM

Oh, that quilt is definitely AOK! What a cutie she is!

sewingsuz 01-06-2011 07:14 PM

Thanks for this tip, I will do this.

This may be super obvious..but just in case...an inexpensive "design wall" is a plastic tablecloth with soft fabric backing. Hang the tablecloth ..plastic side to the wall...and your fabric will stick to the fuzzy side... ;-)

sewingsuz 01-06-2011 07:19 PM

I have on Also and his name is Kittycat. He either is on the ironing board or on my chair. I put another chair in here sometimes for him.
