I love your quilts but to me that is what quilting is all about but I started when our templates were made out of old cereal boxes and or used milk cartons I use to love looking at the hand quilting stitches and how people would design the blocks was so very interesting but quilting like everything else has changed now it is all about how fast we can get something done

I've done a series of quilts made from repurposing things. I have a reason for doing it, and that is to prove that you CAN make nice things in spite of not having a LQS or even a Walmart around you. Everything except the batting in these quilts is made from upcycling. They are duvet covers, pjs, men's shirts, ladies' shirts, curtains, sheets, pillowcases, dresses, etc.

That leaves me the choice of buying on line or bringing it from the states when I visit, or "making do" with repurposing fabrics. I chose to make some this way as a challenge to myself but also to show that it can be done. Oh my! Your quilts are beautiful! My mother always told me "where there is a will there is a way" and you just more than proved that true. Bravo! |
I love quilts from old shirts. They are the coziest and hardiest too, as the shirt fabrics usually have high thread count. I have made 3 or 4 big quilts from old shirts.
I often buy an article of clothing from a thrift shop or rummage sale if it has good fabric, like a cotton skirt in a print I like. Or if it has nice buttons I can take off and use on new shirts I make. I will take the clothing apart to get the good fabric it's made of, for quilting. |
At church, we cut ugly or small unusable pieces into 4" wide strips. Any length. They're sewed together in long strips and then cut into about 72 inch sections, then sewed together to make scrappy charity quilt tops. Good way to use it up!

plaid shirts and plaid yardage were donated to our non-profit Quilts From the Heart for quilts. The shirts were damaged to prevent resale. If the shirt could be repaired, we got permission from the donor to repair and give to charity. The shirts went to Haiti, Romania,and Tajikistan (sp) and were given to school social workers to distribute to indigent children. The buttons were also recycled and we cut the shirts up and made quilts. My sister is on her 11th Adventures in plaid quilt and I have made crazy quilts using Quilting from the heartland templates/pattern, several hexagon quilts and string quilts. We did edit the collection of plaid and recycled anything that had polyester in it and was "schlocky". those pieces went into dog beds.
