What is your favorite block to make?

Mine is flying geese, regular and 3/D sometimes called One Seam Flying geese.
I've attached a link for instructions and cutting chart for different sizes.

Can't wait to see what you guys like to make.

Oh, forgot to say I sew the sides down to make curved edges. The sides are on the bias so they curve and behave quite nicely...lol

mmunchkins 08-08-2020 09:16 AM

Mine is very simple. The four square.

dorismae904 08-08-2020 09:43 AM

My favorite is the string block.

maryb119 08-08-2020 10:20 AM

Log Cabin is one of my favorites. I made a queen size quilt using 3 inch finished log cabin blocks and then hand quilted it. It is my DH favorite.

Onebyone 08-08-2020 10:20 AM

The one seam flying geese is how I make all my flying geese. It's simple, fast, always perfect, and stitching down the pocket is worth that. If the stitching will make a big design difference then I will paper piece the flying geese. My favorite blocks are the disappearing type blocks.

Flying Geese!!! I admire you. I have made many, many in close to 20 years of quilting and I haven't made a good one yet. I will be checking out your link. I've probably watched 20 or so videos on FG, maybe this one will help. I've even taken a class on the technique. Still waiting for that good one.

RedGarnet222 08-08-2020 11:53 AM

Bargello is such a fun block to see finished into a quilt. I like that part of making them. But, overall, I love log cabin blocks because there are so many ways of setting them to change it up.

I only started quilting in 2018 so I'm fairly new - but have taken to it like a duck to water. My favorite quilt ive made so far was a Grandmothers Fan - which is a variation of a Dresden where you only do 1/4 of the block and then set it on point...so it looks like a lady's fan. Since I'm still making every effort to learn everything I can - I have a strict "no repeats!" Policy in place. Which makes me something of an oddball but how do you expect to get better if you always do the same thing? Currently I've been doing work with 60 degree triangles (laid this one out today!) But next project is going to be with Ohio Stars. And MSQ had an awesome tutorial on strip stars that is on my "to do". I'm raiding my green scraps and FQ for that one!

One of my favorites is double slice.

Your two tops above are very pretty.

LAF2019 08-08-2020 01:18 PM

ooh, now I want to try those 3d geese. thanks for the link. my favorite to make is anything wonky or improv, because it hides any mistakes!

HouseDragon 08-08-2020 01:21 PM

I love making Log Cabin blocks. The four-at-a-time Flying Geese are a close second.

My favorite quilt pattern is the kaleidoscope quilt pattern that I designed from a picture on a magazine cover. Every finished block is a surprise! Before that, I just cut squares and resewed them together. I know, crazy! Never tried to follow another's pattern, but I haven't been quilting that long.
Today, I started a modified kaleidoscope quilt using my new drunkard's path template. I'm gonna try to sew the 4 pieces required for DP into them same circle as my 8 piece kaleidoscope blocks--using stripes! Here's my rough sketch pattern and a "rusty" example..
BTW..could ya'll please post pictures so I don't have to keep Googling what you're talking about. I'm inexperienced.

My favorite is the 'stack and whack'...better known as a kaleidoscope....so much can be done with them....

wesing 08-08-2020 07:45 PM

I love making almost any type of star. Sawtooth Stars are a particular favorite. I use Deb Tucker tools for all of my sub-units (TIS, FG, HST, SIS) and that gives me a really good finish.

Three Dog Night 08-08-2020 07:59 PM

I like pinwheels, any size will do.

sewbizgirl 08-08-2020 09:16 PM

Monkey Wrench, if I have to pick one!

WMUTeach 08-09-2020 03:04 AM

Favorites are the good old HST (half square triangle) and a close second is the economy block. Can't seem to make and create with enough of them.

sandy l 08-09-2020 03:21 AM

First would have to be Log Cabins (regular or "wonky"), then Pineapple, and then Crazy Quilt.

QuiltnNan 08-09-2020 03:38 AM

I love making HSTs. They are so versatile... so many patterns/layouts with them.

copycat 08-09-2020 03:57 AM

First of all, Thank you for the link to the 3-d flying geese block. It looks like so much fun to make and no math simplifies it.

My favorite block to make is the Pinwheel block. I think it has a happy look to it when placed in a quilt. :)

Karamarie 08-09-2020 04:42 AM

Mine are log cabin and a block that has some hand embroidery in it.

KathyM 08-09-2020 04:55 AM

Pinwheels, any size

Doggramma 08-09-2020 05:45 AM

I love the Churn Dash. And it’s easy to make a bunch of them with my Accuquilt cutter.

Jordan 08-09-2020 06:20 AM

I love to make Churn Dash, Pinwheels and hearts. Since the heart motif is my favorite I have made quite a few quilts with hearts in them.
Rff1010-very pretty quilts and it sounds like you are hooked on quilting. It is a great hobby and you have done so well.

Jordan 08-09-2020 06:22 AM

aashley333-Beautiful quilt and it is always fun to see what the blocks will turn out to look like. Well done

Onebyone 08-09-2020 07:16 AM

Ricky Tims introduced the one seam flying geese ten years ago on The Quilt Show and I thought it was the best thing. I started making them that very day. He was shown how to do it from a group of quilters in England. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Mu0C_QL8Y
Suzanne McNeil has two books using this technique. The Five Minute Quilt Block https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIxl3af3lzY and the The Ten Minute Quilt Block. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbTHlGGKMPM
I taught how to make the Five Minute Quilt Block at a retreat. Fastest class I ever had. LOL
Here is a chart of sizes for the OSFG https://secureservercdn.net/166.62.1...ing-chart1.pdf

SusieQOH 08-09-2020 07:20 AM

Yes! The Ricky Tims method is great!

I don't have a favorite block. I love pinwheels but they sometimes give me fits. I love a lot of different blocks.
My goal is to make a New York beauty someday.

Iceblossom 08-09-2020 08:06 AM

I signed up for the Ricky Tims Quilt Luminarium, think originally it was going to be in March or maybe May. Anyway, one of the first things that got cancelled due to Covid. It's been rescheduled twice now, I think we are currently hoping to be able to do it in February 2021...

While maybe not my favorite to make, my favorite to use are Snowball blocks. I've made more than probably any other block, usually combined with alternating blocks or just as little sashing squares, or as an all-Snowball quick baby quilt I've done it more than once.

Otherwise, Log Cabins and variations are probably my most repeated block.

sewbizgirl 08-09-2020 08:22 AM

The only problem with this method is the open pockets on either side of the "geese". How can you quilt over the whole block without getting your foot stuck in the pocket?

You can topstitch them down. Like cathedral windows.

juliasb 08-09-2020 09:24 AM

Gosh, I would have a hard time choosing my newest favorite is a quilt I am just finishing and that is the Drunkard's Path. I think the one I have made the most over the years should rank as a favorite and that is the Missouri Star. I fell in love with this block in the late 80's and have made a number of quilts with this block. I could most likely do it blind folded now.

I top stitch them down. I don't curve them. I stitch the pockets down before using the geese in a block. The last few I made I glue basted the pockets down and the LA didn't have a problem quilting right over them.

Bear Paw and Hovering Hawks.

mea12 08-10-2020 01:44 PM

That is one glorious bear-paw quilt and the flying hawks is equally striking in a pattern i've not seen before. I think bear-paw might be my favorite pattern too but I don't have much luck with them.. points aren't ever right. Yours are -!

QuiltnNan 08-10-2020 04:48 PM

those are terrific quilts

But doesn't that defeat the "one seam" advantage? You end up making 3 seams, whereas you'd only make two if you made your geese a more tradional way. Plus you'd have topstitching showing. (Just trying to understand what the advantage is with the folded one seam geese technique... I don't see any.)

IceLeopard, those are gorgeous quilts!

My favourite block to make is New York Beauty.

My favourite sit-down-and-make-a-bunch block is string blocks.
