I love Ohio Star

I have to vote for the friendship star--very forgiving..

I like all of the ones mentioned already, especially Friendship Star. But if you want the easiest of all, except of course the plain square, nothing beats the Stretched Star. It also makes for a beautiful quilt. You just cut a square in a plain fabric, and stitch a little triangle at two opposing corners. When you've done this to as many blocks as you need, sew them all together, arranging them so that the bright corners touch each other, and Bingo! you've got a lovely quilt top. You can use whatever scraps you have around for the corners and get a nice scrappy look.
At first the little corners look like small butterflys, but eventually you can see the stars forming. It's a fun, quick quilt. |
I've been doing Mr. Roosevelt's neck tie for the fall block swap and EVEN I am not messing them up too badly.

Love the HST and (since I've become a QBer) the D9P.

Is there a pattern for the Stretched Star? Sounds interesting. Do you hou have a picture?

I make scrape quilts. My favorite easy block is the 9-patch and log cabin. I found that the sugar bowl or pinwheel was a little harder because I had to make the points meet in the middle. My first quilt was a shoo fly and again I must have been over ironing the triangles because they would stretch a bit and I'd have trouble getting the seams to match. But then I was learning to sew a straight line too.
I found books by Maggie Malone in the library useful. She's written a bunch on Classic American Patchworlk quilt patterns. I'm trying the necktie or bowtie pattern and I like one called Arkansas Traveler or Beggar Block. It can be made to look like butterflies. Both are rated easy. |
