What is your most fun part of making a quilt?

What is the most fun part of making a quilt for you? For me, it is when I get enough of the design on my design wall to know that I "think" I am going to like the results.

And I just got to that spot with this quilt. Let me show you.....fun, fun, fun!

I have been dragging my feet on this quilt, but now I have reached the fun part.

What is your most fun part of making a quilt?

I don't think I've ever thought of what is the most fun for me while making a quilt. I enjoy most phases. I really enjoy hand sewing on the binding on the back of every quilt though. I think why is because it keeps me warm while it signifies the completion of a quilt for a loved one. A quilt that will, hopefully, keep them warm in more ways than one.

I like all phases of putting a quilt together - but am my happiest when I take the last stitch in the binding.

QuiltnNan 04-23-2017 04:56 PM

i'm like you... the piecing is the most fun. and i'm not good at picking colors, so need to see that it will turn out OK

Jane Quilter 04-23-2017 05:18 PM

I like making the blocks. Each one can be a challenge to make a perfect size, with perfect colors. I love pressing, then starching the block. I could press it for hours, pet it, and mount it on the design wall with a sigh that it is completed. Ahh....but then on to the next block.

redstilettos 04-23-2017 05:36 PM

I love all aspects of it. I fall in love with a pattern, then the fabrics. Then the process.

But I do love cutting fabric. Scary and thrilling all at the same time!

I'm sharing a pic of the quilt (or part of it) I made for my DD and her hubby....looks similar to what you are doing! :)

redstilettos 04-23-2017 05:37 PM

well rats. it didn't upload. Guess you'll just have to trust me LOL

Anniedeb 04-23-2017 06:36 PM

For me it starts with the "vision". I always see it in my minds eye, then work to make it turn out the way I saw it! Usually it morphs several times before I finish, and that is the fun part. Evolving, and changing it and figuring out when enough is enough!

Well, phooey....I was looking forward to seeing what you have done. Guess I WILL have to trust you. :)

it really depends. i'm doing an EPP 60 degree 2" diamond quilt, aqua stars with white between. I love all of it so far. i'm making a baby quilt too, and every part of it is fun to me. I love when it's done, and i'm off for another one.

sewbizgirl 04-23-2017 07:28 PM

I love pulling the fabrics from my stash and scrap bins... then cutting, I love cutting. And I love making the blocks. I usually enjoy the actual quilting too. Quilting is awesome!

I love working with color --- pulling the fabrics from my stash is the most fun part for me! In fact, I find that more and more these days, I pick colors, do the piecing to see how they all look together, then I'm done with that quilt and it becomes a UFO. I need to partner with someone who loves to do the quilting part, LOL!! Any takers? :o

I'm with you Jan in VA. I love the design phase. I used to be afraid of cutting! But now when I buy new fabric I can't wait to cut it up and see what it will become! I'm learning now to love the quilting aspect as I bought a long arm last year.

I love putting the blocks up on my design wall and seeing them make another design that I didn't expect.
I love piling colours together before I start.
I love, (Yes, I know I'm nuts), ironing and starching fabrics, before cutting them.
I love FMQ-ing when you get in a rhythm and you can just keep going.

Stitchnripper 04-24-2017 03:54 AM

I like it all too but the hardest part is fabric selection. Sometimes it all comes together easily and sometimes it takes a while. But I like it all from beginning to end.

Mitty 04-24-2017 04:12 AM

I enjoy planning / doing the math on the quilt - figuring out how many of each piece I need to cut and therefore how much fabric I need.
And weirdly I've started to enjoy squaring up the blocks. My last quilt had 88 blocks and I remember sitting there looking at them and thinking how long it was going to take, but once I got going it was kind of fun. It doesn't require a great deal of attention, so I could let my mind wander or listen to a podcast, and it was very relaxing.

maminstl 04-24-2017 04:14 AM

I like it all, but pulling fabrics on a new project might just be my favorite. Love working with color.

rryder 04-24-2017 04:16 AM

I love all aspects. Except when things aren't going well, then whatever the problem whether choosing fabrics, designing, piecing, quilting on my domestic machine-- that part gets momentarily demoted to not love until the problem is solved.

If I had to choose my least favorite aspect of quilting it would be precision piecing, or doing any part that requires putting lots of the same units together-- which is why I do so many art/improv. quilts.

I like to doodle quilt for relaxation.

I even enjoy the sandwiching and basting part...

Annie68 04-24-2017 04:54 AM

Planning the quilt design, then picking the fabrics, the rest is to "get it done".

Boston1954 04-24-2017 05:28 AM

I know this is going to sound as though I cannot make a decision, but I like the whole thing. I like to audition the fabric, cut it and get ready to sew. When the top is done I really enjoy thinking about how I want to quilt it. Even the binding is fun for me because I am already thinking about the next project.

Actually there is one part that I do not like....ripping out stitches when I put a piece in the wrong place.

NZquilter 04-24-2017 06:24 AM

Goodness, that is a hard question! Well, let's see, I love everything to do with the top: fabric choice, piecing, seeing it all come together and then seeing a completed top. I fall into a rut when I get to the basting. I love the quilting part, only if I'm not too hard on myself and unpick everything! After that, I'm so impatient to finish that I just push myself to do the binding.

osewme 04-24-2017 06:35 AM

I like the final stage of hand sewing the binding to the back. That's the time that I can truly think about the special person that the quilt was made for, pray for them & think back on the whole process of making the quilt. What I love best is when I struggle to figure out just the right quilt for the right person & all of a sudden a light bulb goes off & the plan comes together. Many, many times I totally amaze myself that I came up with what I did. :)

Doggramma 04-24-2017 07:15 AM

My favorite part is the designing process and when I start pulling together the fabrics I want to use.

quilterpurpledog 04-24-2017 08:33 AM

My favorite part is Done! However, I do like most steps. My hardest hurdle is choosing the fabrics out of my stash. I just like to spend time in my sewing room as it is a comfortable space and free of distraction unless I choose to be distracted.

RedGarnet222 04-24-2017 08:59 AM

I suppose it is the thrill of the hunt for just the right fabric to make a quilt I have in mind. I enjoy all of the process like most of the gals said. Most especially the finished part too. It is like Yippee! It is done.

pewa88 04-24-2017 10:56 AM

I enjoy piecing the blocks the most. Second would be the quilting (on the longarm).

MadQuilter 04-24-2017 11:01 AM

I love the planning stage the most. Drawing out the design on grid paper, deciding on colors, shopping stash, and getting everything laid out for the cutting. Then the real work begins. I used to hate making the sandwich but recently realized that I was just afraid of messing up the quilting. Now that I am gaining confidence in quilting, I don't mind the basting either. My DF taught me how to make flanged binding and even binding is a breeze now.

Austinite 04-24-2017 11:02 AM

I love all of it: fabric shopping is awesome, I love figuring out what my plan is, putting it together, quilting it, going back to pick out binding fabric, binding...I love quilting! :)

Becky's Crafts 04-24-2017 05:12 PM

I really enjoy all aspects of making quilts usually, but I think my favorite part right now is doing the free motion quilting on the quilts. I'm still learning a great deal about it, but I feel like I'm getting better. :-)

Claire123 04-24-2017 08:50 PM

For me it's either the very end, having a finished project, or the very beginning, shopping for fabrics.

DebbieJJ 04-25-2017 12:12 AM

For me, it's the actual sewing of the blocks -- after I get into a rhythm of how each block goes together. I'm the kind of sewist who likes to make one part of each block after the other, then go on to another part, etc., before putting the block together.....that is, after I make a test block to see how it works for me.:)

toverly 04-25-2017 02:22 AM

I love it all the way up to sandwiching the quilt. Then once I get over sandwiching and quilting. I'm an overall quilter, I like putting the binding on. I enjoy hand stitching down the back and finishing it.

Karamarie 04-25-2017 03:53 AM

I like shopping for the fabric once I've decided what I'm going to do. Also I like sewing the blocks.

Kris P 04-25-2017 04:33 AM

Every quilt is different for me. Sometimes it's choosing the fabrics, the thrill of knowing I found the perfect fabrics. Often, it's finishing the final block and knowing that the assembly of the quilt comes next. If I know what I want to quilt, the quilting is my favorite part. There's always a little thrill when I'v finished the binding and it's complete.

By far, my favorite part, though, is seeing a quilt i've made in use. When I go to my sister's home and see my neice's quilt on her bed... or see that my sister cuddles in her quilt in front of the tv every night..Or seeing a baby quilt that's clearly been laundered plenty and is being used... That's the best part!

Bobbielinks 04-25-2017 04:52 AM

I enjoy the cutting and piecing and of course the quilting; but it's the planning process that I really, really enjoy. Looking for the perfect pattern; then going through my stash to see if I have enough fabrics to make it or if I need to go shopping.

fivepaws 04-25-2017 05:18 AM

My favorite is finishing it and gifting it.

klswift 04-25-2017 06:19 AM

Other than the inevitable ripping out seams(!), I enjoy all parts from deciding on what to make, the fabric choices, cutting, sewing, etc. But, without a doubt, my favorite part is when I give it to someone or sell it to someone. The idea that someone is going to enjoy something I made is what keeps my juices flowing.

Beachbaby12 04-25-2017 06:23 AM

I like piecing and seeing the block come together. I like all of it - but the scary part is quilting the quilt as I'm not experienced with that. I have to jump in and just do a Civil War quilt and quilt it and not be scared (but I'm struggling). It's a layer cake with all the blocks - about a twin or bigger size.

annette1952 04-25-2017 07:13 AM

I do like all of the phases but cutting & piecing is probably my fave part

tessagin 04-25-2017 07:34 AM

I like when I get motivated and on a roll. Doesn't matter what part. The beginning works for me.
