Hi all,

Eleanor Burns loves to steam those seams, yet her son who also quilts doesn't.... he feels that steam distorts the fabric....

So which way do you fall....

Steam or No Steam!

Hugs

Steamer !!!

ssgramma 05-05-2011 01:40 PM

No steam. I never put water in an iron anymore period. If I need to sprinkle or spray that is just fine!

pdcakm 05-05-2011 01:46 PM

at home - no steam. at my group - steam, because the iron is already set that way. just make sure it is hot!

janRN 05-05-2011 01:51 PM

Steamer. I don't put the water in my iron; I use a small spray bottle.

KandiKane 05-05-2011 01:52 PM

No steam , I think it stretches the fabric, dry iron best I prefer ..

Me, too! To many leaky irons over the years have led me to never put water in an iron.

emerald46 05-05-2011 02:20 PM

No steam.

quiltsRfun 05-05-2011 02:21 PM

Depends on which iron I'm using and where I am in the process. If I'm using my small travel iron beside my machine, no steam. If I'm using my big iron to press the quilt top, then I use steam to really set those seams before quilting.

Stitchnripper 05-05-2011 02:47 PM

steamer

featherweight 05-05-2011 02:47 PM

Guess it is up to the individual... Sometimes I steam sometimes I don't...

bjnicholson 05-05-2011 02:48 PM

Steam

justwannaquilt 05-05-2011 02:51 PM

My iron makes the decision for me. It was dropped off the ironing board and gets really angry at me some times and it just decides not to steam even though the steam is on.

So I would say YES I steam! However I do not move the iron while it is touching the fabric. press down lift up move press down lift up move....

auntiehenno 05-05-2011 02:53 PM

I do whatever trips my trigger. HA

Annaquilts 05-05-2011 02:58 PM

Yes, they distort but I can not lay off the steam. I like my seams flat. Besure to press/set the seam and not iron, move the iron across the seams.

ditto

cmagee84 05-05-2011 03:09 PM

I can't decide!! I steam one day, then the next day I don't. No rhythm or reason!!!

If there are lots of wrinkles in a piece that has been folded for a long time, I use steam and starch!!

sewmuchmore 05-05-2011 03:24 PM

Steam here, only because I was told you had to use steam. It works for me :P

But I steam more than not!

lyndaloo 05-05-2011 03:29 PM

so-sew 05-05-2011 03:37 PM

I root for "Team Steam"!

nativetexan 05-05-2011 04:00 PM

i tend to steam!

patchsamkim 05-05-2011 04:03 PM

steam is my choice too....just need to be careful to PRESS, not iron as that can stretch the fabric.

NJ Quilter 05-05-2011 04:07 PM

Steam that puppy into submission!

cctx. 05-05-2011 04:48 PM

Both, but sometimes steam.

jgriinke 05-05-2011 04:52 PM

I'm a steamer. And, if that doesn't do it, bring on the starch. ;-)

hopetoquilt 05-05-2011 05:44 PM

converted to steamer now that I have a decent iron. I don't iron, I press. If you press and lift instead of running the iron across the fabric, I think it prevents distortion.
