What's the name of the design?

They're very pretty, all of them.

They look really really close to perfect. the thing I notice is that they lay very flat. Often these types of pinwheel blocks cup up at the center. You are doing a great job. just try and keep your seam allowance correct.

I agree to sew the sashing on at 1/8 inch....your blocks are beautiful!!

Stitchnripper 04-30-2012 02:39 PM

I agree about the sashing at 1/8". that has saved me a number of times.

They look wonderful! Jcrow has a great idea (use 1/8" seams for those areas). If you're worried about fraying, you can carefully dab a bit of Fray Check, onto the raw edges. Just run the tip of the bottle, along the very edge of the fabric, being careful to not saturate past about 1/16".

Those darn 1/4" and scant 1/4" seams are killing me! Thanks for the 1/8" seam allowance and Fray Check suggestion, I just happen to have a bottle in the closet. Well...on to #7.

Unless it's going into competition, who needs perfect points? The block are really pretty and a lot of my patchwork is pointless.:)

It will be a pretty quilt. Love the colors and the pattern. I do at least one test block for a new pattern. If I have done it before I don't usually do one.

They don't look like test blocks to me, they look perfect! You won't lose the points if the point that is nearest the edge is 1/4" or more away. Squaring up the blocks to correct size is very helpful. That is all you need for the seam, and it could be less, but reducing the stitch length secures the seam when you are certain the points are correct. If one side will be less than the 1/4" seam, you could draw the seam line on the back of the block and use it as a guide. I baste stitch the seam first, check the points, and then sew my normal 1.5 stitch length when points are where I want them to be.

I know this is a long shot, but you could try pressing your seams open instead of to one side or the other. That will give you a tiny bit more "block" and take up less fabric for the seam allowances. Just a thought.
