When do YOU call it quits??

So I realized that my bobbin ran out... 9 out of 12 quilt pieces ago!!

So I meticulously re-pinned them, took a time-out to eat dinner, and re-sewed them. Only to realize, that I NEVER REFILLED THE BOBBIN!!!!

I think it's time for bed...

quiltingcandy 12-19-2012 09:33 PM

It took me a while to realize I need to stop sewing after 9 pm. I may not go to bed until midnight but I was making too many errors after 9, so finally decided to accept it as fact and stop before that time or not start sewing if I was antsy. I could get a project ready to go for the next morning but stop short of sewing.

hopetoquilt 12-20-2012 02:55 AM

I stop as soon as it is no longer fun. Quilting is my hobby. I don't put pressure on myself to do anything or finish anything. I am also a morning peron... So I rarely quilt at night.

Nilla 12-20-2012 03:01 AM

I over-quilt sometimes. I make mini goals for myself, then just have to reach them even if I'm tired or my eyes are strained. I keep reminding myself that this is for fun and I don't have a time line, but I push myself anyway. Go figure.

NanaCindyLou 12-20-2012 03:41 AM

I NEVER REFILLED THE BOBBIN!!!!
LOL - I am not laughing at you, I am laughing with you....I did almost this exact (exact!) same thing on Tuesday night....:o

ArtsyOne 12-20-2012 03:41 AM

I stop when the errors start piling up and I'm spending more time unsewing than sewing.

Yep!! Stop sewing.
Sandy

pumpkinpatchquilter 12-20-2012 04:44 AM

Hahahaha - oh you poor thing. It was definitely time for bed. Or a break at least. ;) Maybe try keeping some pre-filled bobbins around. Sometimes if I know that I'm going to likely use a couple I'll fill two instead of just one, so it's there.

Good luck! ;)

Oh no! Yep, time to walk away. My latest and greatest was two pieces of batting that it took THREE TRIES to join together so it would be the right size for a baby quilt (first joining it end to end, then one side was flipped over), followed by THREE TRIES at the backing -- that one I cut wrong to begin with and then sewed it wrong.

Let's just not even talk about the binding.

I hope you slept well! :)

Plumtree 12-20-2012 04:47 AM

I'm sorry but that is funny ;-) Seriously, when the cussin starts the sewing stops. I do hope you are able to get your happy face on and sew something beautiful :-) I have done something similiar had to pick out the same mistake 3 times in a row, just kept sewing piece on upside down.

mawluv 12-20-2012 04:54 AM

I'm with you, hopetoquilt, I stop as soon as it's no longer fun!

KwiltyKahy 12-20-2012 05:21 AM

I hope you know I'm laughing with you, not at you. At least I hope you were able to laugh. this sounds like something I would do.

Since cavemen starting sewing pelts together we've been sewing "right sides together". Yesterday I was chain piecing small cornerstones to sashing strips--yep, you guessed it. All twelve were sewn right side to wrong side. I took a cookie break, cussed, unsewed them, and then did them correctly. And, I wasn't tired or rushed or pressured--just a senior blonde moment.

This is exactly when I quit for the day.

Toni C 12-20-2012 05:44 AM

Hahaha SOOO Been There Done That!! At the time I imagine I looked like one of those cartoon tea pot blowing my stack but now it's kind of funny in a rueful way.I also sew same upside down, backward and to wrong end pieces together...More than once

Pat625 12-20-2012 06:08 AM

When I am ready to throw the machine thru a window it's time for a break..I have lots of time to quilt since being on disability, so there is no reason to spend time on it while frustrated! What fun could that be??

soccertxi 12-20-2012 06:15 AM

I seem to be able to piece fairly late..but my DH says I cannot quilt on the frame after about 8:30. Seems I thrash around in the bed all night. Think I'm quilting in my sleep? lolol I KNOW I dream about it...

Same here. Because I don't see well, I seldom sew at night.

huntannette 12-20-2012 06:43 AM

Dog darn it....been there, done that....means you need a break....lol

I think I'd call it a night if I did that twice in an evening. Hope today goes better for you.

Cheers, K

Lori S 12-20-2012 06:54 AM

Everyone has a threshold.. you found yours on that day! Sometimes its just time to turn out the lights and call it a day.

LoupEsprit 12-20-2012 08:04 AM

Nighttime quilting is the ONLY quilting I really do; weekends are usually so hectic I rarely get a full day to do anything. So it's usually a few hours at night to work on projects. Last week, I managed to break my seam ripper! (That night, I just dropped everything, switched off the machine and went to bed, with a project still hanging off the needle. I was sooo done.)

I will say, last night did end well. I (finally) filled the bobbin, pieced my squares, pressed them, pieced my row, and put it away for the night. I didn't dare start on the other side!

And yes, I slept GREAT knowing I didn't leave it hanging!

Mary O 12-20-2012 08:49 AM

LOL I'm so in tune with my sewing machine that I know when bobbin thread is empty, sounds a little different....

AZ Jane 12-20-2012 08:50 AM

Stop when it is no longer fun!! Life is too short!

Jan in VA 12-20-2012 08:53 PM

Stop when mistakes pile up?
Stop when it's no longer fun?
Stop because ____ tells me to?

Shoot, I stop when it's time to start hitting the bottle!
Which is usually after I've done something totally inane, frustrating, time-wasting, humbling.....:hunf:
Like tonight.

A dear friend just gifted me with the Sidewinder so I will have no more excuses to run out of bobbin---Happy Holidays Everyone!

rj.neihart 12-21-2012 04:16 AM

Hahahah....been here more than once!

quilttiger 12-21-2012 04:24 AM

Yep, been there, too. Either I stop for the day or take a break for a while if the day is still young :D. Sometimes I will switch to a different project.

lclang 12-21-2012 04:50 AM

I was sewing HUGE pinwheel star blocks and did two at a time. The first two turned out fine. The second two not so much, I reversed the pinwheel colors and had to rip both blocks out entirely. Took a couple of hours to rip it all out. I was done sewing for that day! I still have two to go but that will have to wait until the Christmas rush is over.

maviskw 12-21-2012 05:26 AM

My stupid thing is to not change the stitch after I have done it wrong. If I have the zig-zag stitch on and am finished with that, I put on the next piece for straight stitching and forget that it is on zig-zag. So I take the fabric out, rip out the zig-zag stitches and put it back in. Away we go - - still on zig-zag! LOL

hperttula123 12-21-2012 05:48 AM

oh goodness....time to take a break. I've done that before.

kydeb 12-21-2012 05:54 AM

Sorry but that made me smile!! I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in this boat :) Yep, that's about the time to call it quits!

MargeD 12-21-2012 06:27 AM

I've done this myself a time or two. When mistakes happen or I get frustrated, it's time to take a break, take a nap, go to bed, whatever, things will look different in the morning.

I usually give up after about the third stupid mistake.

karate lady 12-21-2012 11:08 AM

that's almost as funny as me sitting on the pin cushion. :-) but I stop when I repeat a mistake, or start making several in a row.

MimiBug123 12-21-2012 11:57 AM

Thank you!!!! You've just reaffirmed m sanity. I was worried there for a bit! Thank heavens we are all in the same boat. When I start talking to my machine and calling the fabric not-so-nice names, it's definitely time to stop fo the time being!

roseirish48 12-21-2012 12:09 PM

I fill three bobbins with thread before starting any new project. It's time to stop when last bobbin is empty; at least long enough to fill three more. Otherwise, i quit when i've been making the same mistake over and over, a good show comes on tv which is in different room, or Poo_Chie and Truffles come tell me it's waaaaay past bedtime!

RobertaMarie 12-21-2012 01:32 PM

Been there, done that. My Singer 9960 beeps when the bobbin is out or the needle is UN-threaded. Great asset. Just wish it would say so before hand!! Take care of yourself and get some rest. God bless you.

weasier22 12-21-2012 01:50 PM

Love it ... Isn't it great that we can all laugh at ourselves! Running out of bobbin is one of my greatest feats! Seems like no matter how often I look at the bobbin to see how close I am to running out, you can always hear me say, "oops ... ran out of bobbin!" Hope your days have been better. Merry Christmas!
