SueSew 08-07-2011 01:25 PM

It has been so humid and hot, and I have had the windows open (no ac in the quilt room)

I can't lay out and sandwich my son's quilt. It's 56x72 and all batiks, and it is actually mushy, limp and wilted, and so is the batting. Starch and sizing long gone. To make it worse, it is now raining. I just gave up!! I closed the windows and put a space heater on high, and left. Maybe it will dry out by tomorrow. It's like a bad hair day, but for quilts.

Have you ever had the weather wreck your quilting plans?

LisaGibbs 08-07-2011 01:27 PM

not quilting as I have central air, but I have had them ruin my fabric shopping trips as I refuse to drive in the rain unless I have no other choice and hubby has to drive me. He is great but doesn't understand how I need more fabric with a room full--LOL

Deb watkins 08-07-2011 01:32 PM

Oh, I am right here with you on this one. It is so humid, I have had to put the laundry in the drier!!!! They won't even dry outside despite being there all day. My hands are so sweaty, that I don't dare to do the hand stitching on a new baby quilt. And it is just not right to have to go to the basement (no natural light) when it sunny out today!

quiltingcandy 08-07-2011 01:33 PM

It's too humid when your hand sticks to everything it touches.

:-D Our AC is broke! To hot to quilt!

sueisallaboutquilts 08-07-2011 01:43 PM

I'd give up anything but not my AC- it's the only way I can get anything done.

dellareya 08-07-2011 01:55 PM

I have never lived where there was humidity and after reading your responses I never want to. We are incredibly spoiled with great weather. Rarely to hot and rarely to cold and no snow.

luvstitches 08-07-2011 02:03 PM

I never thought I would say this...I will not complain when summer will be over. This summer has had the highest humidity that I can ever remember. Last summer I was outside for the most part of the day, all summer. This summer I have been inside day after day.
I love autumn.
I do feel for you though. I wouldn't be able to quilt in this had it not been for our AC.

Lori S 08-07-2011 02:09 PM

This is the year I am soo happy I put my sewing room in the basement. Yep the de-humidifier has been running alot but it soo cool ... I don't mind having the iron on.

TanyaL 08-07-2011 02:24 PM

Hey, Dellareya, while you don't have weather extremes you do have the old earthquakes. I was living in Alameda when the last big one hit in the Bay Area. I will take high humidity, drought, hurricane, tornado or anything else to living though an earthquake like that one again. Every area has it's minus points, but for me I'm glad to be back in Texas and we even had a 2.5 here last night.

LeslieFrost 08-07-2011 02:24 PM

It's too hot and humid to quilt when....

Your hand is sweating and you can't grasp the needle.

Your face is sweating and it's dripping onto the fabric.

Your butt sticks to the vinyl top of your sewing stool, even though there is knit pants between your thighs and the vinyl.

Ask me how I know!

blueangel 08-07-2011 03:47 PM

Ditto.

oldcatlady 08-07-2011 03:57 PM

this has been a miserable summer for me. I don't have a/c and I don't tolerate the heat very well. My electric bill is up d/t all the fans I have. I do my sewing when it's hot like this and save the quilting for cooler weather since I hand quilt on my lap. It makes me shudder just thinking about it!!! I think that's why I love fall so much, it's such a relief after the hot summer.

That's me, 24/7. Beat menopause but now I'm on anti-estrogen. And to think I complained about cold feet for 40+ years. LOL

Val in IN 08-07-2011 08:05 PM

When is it too hot to quilt? NOW
I moved here (SW Indiana) from Arizona. I can take all the heat you can dish out, but the humidity is killing me. I HATE it!! I hate the mosquitoes, I hate the gnats, and the biting flies. And because I'm from AZ, I don't consider 50+ inches of rain a year NORMAL!!

Little RoO 08-07-2011 08:50 PM

Never too hot or humid to quilt in the UK....just woken up to yet another lovely wet and cool summers day !!

cherylynne 08-07-2011 08:57 PM

Even though we have central air, I turn it off during the day and float around in the pool. Can't quilt there and it's hard for me to see well in the evening, so I haven't sewn too much lately. I still prefer summer to winter.

kiffie2413 08-07-2011 08:59 PM

Well, we are in a severe drought, so I have almost forgotten what humidity feels like! But, I must say too much humidity and too dry neither one are great! I am just thankful we have a/c, and am praying for rain...and autumn!!

marscrafter 08-08-2011 01:22 AM

It's not humid here right now, just really hot outside. We have the coolers on, and it's wrecking my ability to quilt by hand. I can't force myself to sit under a warm quilt while it's close to triple digits. LOL

quiltbuddy 08-08-2011 03:49 AM

Tell me about it. My sewing machine threads get all tangled because they won't stay behind the needle with the fan running directly in front of me. I also avoid turning the iron on so I'm constantly having to wait for it to heat up.

Dodie 08-08-2011 05:19 AM

I will take the snow and below zero any day over humidity can always put on a sweater and throw another log on the fire

SueSew 08-08-2011 05:30 AM

I closed the windows in my quilting room and put on the space heater all day yesterday and my fabric is now no longer damp. But it is pretty hot in there! LOL

I hate to invest in an a/c but I think even if I don't mind the heat and humidity my fabric does - what if my little stash gets moldy or mildewed???
I think I'll get a little a/c for one of the windows and call it a necessary quilting expense.
:):):)

Landers 08-08-2011 06:04 AM

Yes, I got up one Saturday morning to go to a quilt class and it was snowing. I would have gone but the area I was going to was 45 minutes away on total highway. Too may people drive too fast when it is snowing! But just this one time did I let weather stop me.

sarahrachel 08-08-2011 06:17 AM

I'm right there with you. My whole house doesn't have air. And my bedroom is on the 3rd floor attic which also happens to be where the sewing area is. Any quilting is on hold for me until September at the earliest. I can't even sew in the afternoon because it's so hot. And the window fan happens to be right over where my cutting area is, so no fan while cutting. I spent the last 2 hours cutting out hexagons so I can make a GFG outside in the shade where there might be a breeze. Good luck with the heat. I hope it cools down for you a little bit!

Launie 08-08-2011 06:22 AM

I am in Salt Lake City, and we are having an unusually coolish summer. Hasn't officially hit 100 degrees, I don't think. And humidity, what's that? LOL. So party at my house, BYOM. (bring your own machine)

Indeed. I hate the heat and humidity makes it even worse. I've never done well in the heat.

If it's that humid you might want to consider a dehumidifier instead of or in addition to a window AC unit. We have a little one that just plugs into the wall, works great (keeps the basement from getting damp!) You really want to make sure your fabric isn't getting damp and then staying that way and that space heater doesn't sound comfortable to me AT ALL  Besides which it's a fire hazard if you leave it unattended!

sarahrachel 08-08-2011 06:31 AM

You all are complaining about no rain. Well, so am I. My parents have a lawn matience business and even though we got an 1 of rain over the weekend, it all ran off and the grass is still not growing. Therefore, no income. Which means cold winter because the heat isn't getting turned up as high as last year (67!!) And yesterday the humidity was so high and it was supposed to rain, but it didn't. And it's still humid. All I'm saying, we better get a very snowy winter to make up for all this dry.

Anyone else believe in the farmer's almanac? it's been pretty accurate all summer for us.

Jennifer22206 08-08-2011 06:34 AM

I don't mind quilting in high heat (we've had so many days over 90 I lost count), but this humidity is killing me, and it's making my 2 year old miserable. She's constantly throwing temper tantrums because it's too hot & humid to walk to the park and play (it's about a mile away)

These are all good points. We have the humidity, the cold and sometimes even the snow; but we don't have earthquakes. I was so scared when the last big one hit there. The first one wasn't as bad as the month long aftershocks that came after. I remember one night sitting in my living room and you could literly feel the aftershock come under my house; I thought my floor was going to bust open. My husband was overseas and I had three kids plus ran a daycare and had to deal with it all alone. I had a lot of fun site seeing in San Fransisco and even more fun seeking out resturants in the nearby towns; we lived in Alameda. After the earthquake hit we couldn't even safely leave the island. At least here most of the times we get warnings as to what is to come;weatherwise.

jaciqltznok 08-08-2011 06:59 AM

this year I would say March til????

the casual quilter 08-08-2011 07:19 AM

Yep. We usually don't have the humidity you folks do, but we have the summer heat. It makes it really hard to quilt when it's hot. One more month and we should start cooling off and then I can get some sewing done :-D

sandwich child 08-08-2011 08:15 AM

Move to Colorado. The humidity in the Denver area yesterday was 8%!

Jo Mama 08-08-2011 08:50 AM

That's too bad. We HAVE to have AC in FL so I can always quilt. It's time for you to go the AC'd mall and shop.

We're all coming to move in with you!

Learner747 08-08-2011 09:38 AM

At our first house I had my quilting machine and frames in the basement. The basement leaked. It leaked so badly that a small river ran under my machine. I had to quilt anyway because I was doing it professionally. You can't ask for higher humidity than pure H2O.

just be thankfull that you invested in fabric not stock...bet the humidity is terrible on wall st.

Olivia's Grammy 08-08-2011 12:38 PM

I live in GA, can't do without A/C. I still stay hot all the time and DH is cold all the time. Can't wait til winter. I can add a sweater or jacket. To sweaty in my bd suit. :D

gypsylady5 08-08-2011 12:57 PM

Florida is too hot and humid to do anything in the summer unless you have A/C. Mine is working great so I am able to quilt and sew whenever I want. I feel for you guys up north. I know in Michigan it would get hotter than Florida all the time, but never last long. I'd rather be back in Virginia and in my huge sewing basement there. It was heaven on earth!

Is the top done?
Do you have a dryer? or can get to one? Put the top and backing in it until they feel dry. They won't wrinkle in a few minutes....
I would get a fan, and turn it so it is blowing on you! ( Not on the quilt pieces) If you are really hot and miserable have it blow across a bowl of ice.
I lived up in that climate, and advise you hot steamy weather up there will not last much longer!
