What do you put at the bottom?
thanks robin |
i used plastic embroidery cloth and sewed it so it curves slightly upward in the middle. it's covered with the lining fabric.
My LQS recommended a very heavy pellon
Cheap peal and stick floor tiles cut to size and covered with the lining fabric:)
foam board covered with a pillow case of the lining fabric.
I use plastic canvas and stitch it to the bottom. It washes just fine.
I cut up plastic $1 placemats and make a sleeve of lining fabric for it..
Masonite cut to size.
piney |
1/8" plywood from craft store
It depends on the bag. On simple totes I use plexi glass bought by the sheet that I cut to size. Smaller purses I just use a heavy stabilizer thats like cardboard, its fusible and holds it shape very well. I have been know to use the fabric boards that fabric comes on at our wal-mart, they only sell precuts and that fabric is really stiff.
Such a good question! I am waiting to see all the great responses here too. I am thinking about ordering those bag e bottoms, but they seem pricey.
Plastic canvas-sewn in under the lining. Or the dollar store's, bendable cutting mats- 2 per package. Just cut them to size. It depends on how stiff I want the bottom to be.

I get scrap plastic sign material at the local sign shop.
I use plastic canvas and cover it in fabric. I leave an opening so I can remove the plastic when I wash the purse or tote. If it's a big tote for something like groceries, I don't put anything in the bottom, just box the seams.
thats what I do too.

Years ago I made fabric bowls and found some left overs, don't know if they still have that stiff pellon or not. That worked for me.

I just completed a tote that was 4" x 15.5" on the bottom. Canvas plastic that I have was not long enough. Pattern called for plexiglass. Went to Home Depot & Lowe's. Neither would cut the plexiglass for me and I don't know how. Finally found a 1/4" thick wood they call craft wood in the lumber section. It was about 20" long. Width was fine. I drew a line and hubby cut it. He sanded it and rounded the corners and sanded them. I made a fabric sleeve out of the lining and used velcro to close it so it can be removed for washing. I plan to get scotchgard to use all over the tote prior to using it. It will repel dirt and be easier to clean.
What craft store carries the wood?
What tool is used to cut the floor tiles?

What tool/how do you cut your own plexi glass?

I have found that you iron on two or more layers of a heavy interfacing on the (wrong side) bottom of either the outer fabric or lining makes a firm bottom for a purse. I don't like pillowcase bottoms because mine always seem to come up and the junk in the bottom of my purse hides under them. If I need a firmer bottom for a tote, I finish the bottom of the bag, then sew a piece of lining fabric over the bottom (on the inside), then just slide a piece of plastic into it.
Depends on the bag. Sometimes I do a double quilted layer at the bottom, other times I use cardboard in a pillowcase covering. My friend works in a pharmacy and I get the heavy duty cardboard from her.
I have a Vera Bradlely purse, I washed it and took the bottom out first,it had a sleeve of cardboard underneath it!!! They sure didn't spend money on expensive materials!! I tried it and it does work fine...also used vinyl placemat cut up...works great too!
I looked at foam board at Joann's and it seemed to thick to me. I love the vinyl placemat and milk jug ideas .
Thanks, robin |

Pick up some of those election signs AFTER the election is over. They are made of corrugated plastic and can be cut to size. Keeps them out of the landfill and won't cost you a dime.
I went to a window blind store and they had plastic vertical slats left over from jobs and they gave them to me. they can be cut to size with scissors. sometimes I cover them with fabric. Also my husband cuts plexiglass for me to fit the purses.
cheap floor tiles is a FABULOUS idea! Thanks for sharing.
