when pressing your block seams do you use any spray starch or mist with water?

amma 08-19-2011 10:54 AM

If they don't lay nicely, yes I do :D:D:D

btiny36 08-19-2011 11:08 AM

yeppers sure do..I use best press

NJ Quilter 08-19-2011 11:22 AM

Only if they're not behaving. I use steam all the time so I don't generally have the problem.

Same here!

slstitcher 08-19-2011 11:33 AM

I use best press also.

sahm4605 08-19-2011 11:34 AM

Mostly steam. But use starch and water when needed. I starch my fabric so heavy it is like paper.

Lori S 08-19-2011 11:37 AM

If I have starched the fabrics prior to cutting its usually not needed, if not I definately starch, it helps to keep them where I want them come quilting time.

klc 08-19-2011 11:56 AM

Yep. Starch, water, whatever is needed.

ckcowl 08-19-2011 12:23 PM

seldom do i have a need to use anything while constructing my blocks- if the fabrics need any starch-or water it happens before i cut- so while constructing the blocks i do not chance distorting the block with moisture-

snipforfun 08-19-2011 12:30 PM

I do a lot of "persuasive pressing"! I beat them into submission!

ManiacQuilter2 08-19-2011 01:12 PM

Usually steam works for me !!! :)

oma66 08-19-2011 02:05 PM

I use sizing.

patchsamkim 08-19-2011 02:21 PM

Most of the time I just use steam, but some times I do use sizing...and just started using the Best press...got some as a gift and like it.

Me, too. I don't even like using steam as it can stretch the fabric. I used to use steam and nothing ever fit. Since I have been using a dry iron my seams line up good.

Raggiemom 08-19-2011 02:27 PM

Usually steam works but have pulled out the starch before.

EasyPeezy 08-19-2011 02:36 PM

I use a very small piece of cloth which I spray with water then put it on the
seam and press the seam once. Remove the cloth and continue pressing with
a dry iron. I don't like water or steam to get all over as it can cause some
unwanted shrinkage and distort my block. My seams are as flat as they can get. :-D

DogHouseMom 08-19-2011 02:51 PM

I starch my fabric every time I lay an iron to it.

Oh good... I was thinking I was the only one! (that used a dry iron)

Glassquilt 08-19-2011 04:11 PM

I use a spray bottle of water. Once in a blue moon I use starch.

Ohhhh! I'm not the only one!

LivelyLady 08-19-2011 06:27 PM

I always starch :D

Vat 08-20-2011 03:40 AM

I starch my fabric stiff before I cut anything out, then all I need to do is press.

luana 08-20-2011 04:05 AM

Love Best Press - seams go where I want them to go! I'm the boss!

ghostrider 08-20-2011 04:22 AM

I seldom need anything but a dry iron during block or quilt construction and when I do, it's just a quick shot of steam. I never, ever, starch fabric and use water only if necessary when pressing yardage before cutting.

GailG 08-20-2011 04:45 AM

Don't use starch. I do steam press the bajeeze out of them though.

grumpy90650 08-20-2011 05:15 AM

always use steam.....usually do not have a problem...

Iraxy 08-20-2011 05:22 AM

I use a dry iron since the day 20 years ago when it (the iron) wet tan water all over my last block in a 30 block quilt with a white background. Arrgh! It still raises my blood pressure when I think of it. ;(

fudge and furs 08-20-2011 05:54 AM

Would not even think about "no starch" My favorite of all is "Niagara, Non Aerosol"Biodegradable, does not flake. Plastic container. Pump spray with a wide spreading nozzle. Dry iron only

Me too - just started using the vodka recipe replacement for Best Press and I am really impressed - love it and now love pressing with it!

snipforfun 08-20-2011 07:20 AM

The non-aerosol Niagara is my favorite too. A cheaper/better alternative to Best Press.

How kind of starch do you use to get your fabric like paper. Thanks

karenpatrick 08-20-2011 01:17 PM

Yep. Both. Whatever it needs.

javin22 08-20-2011 01:18 PM

I have never tried starch, but I think I will now.
