Do you use white muslin or just a white material, such as moda or kona? Just curious. I'm referring to the background.
My preference is Kona. Kona anytime I need solid fabric except for wallhangings.
I like to use white on white.
My mother used nothing but white for borders and sashing so I've sworn that I never will (You'll find a lot of what I do in quilting consists of rejecting whatever it is my mother did:)) When a pattern calls for white, I love love love white fabric with a white screen print on it. It gives it a nice texture and keeps it from looking boring, but it's subtle enough to relegate itself to the background and let the colored peices shine. For the quilt in my pic, I used an ivory with a white screenprint.

I use any white I feel like at the time. Sometimes it's muslin and sometimes it's white on white. Really just depends on what I'm doing with it.

I like Kona. I like a tone on tone pattern.
I use Kona Snow. I buy it by the bolt from Hancock's of Paducah. It isn't as bright as regular white and its not an off white. Just a color of its own! If I use muslin in a quilt, I use Moda muslin which I buy by the bolt also! I also buy Kona black by the bolt! I guess I'm boring!
White screen print on white. I like to mix the screen prints as well for different texture.
I only used kona once and it frays way to much for me, but on the upside it does have a nice weight and feel. I prefer a heavy muslin(Legacy) or a white on white print.
I use both muslin and regular white cotton fabric - like everyone else depends on the project - if its an antique-y looking quilt I will use muslin - otherwise I love good old white for borders, sashing - it looks very clean and crisp.

where is Kona muslin made?? i noticed Legacy muslin is made in China.
ah, found it. Pakistan! |

I really love the bamboo/cotton muslin I bought in Joann's last year. Enough so that I went and bought a second bolt.
Otherwise, I use high quality white sheets- thread count about 250. I know that many don't like to use sheets, but I buy sheets and sheet sets in Ross or TJMaxx and don't care if they are irregular. The first thing I do is rip off the elastic on the fitted, and tear it into rectangles more easily used. I often use the fitted sheet (of any color) as the sashing in a quilt, then I use the flat sheet for a backing, and give the quilt with the pillowcases, which match exactly. |
Thank you all for your wonderful insight!

BRILLIANT! |
Usually muslin. Sometimes a white on white if it really sings to me.
I like white on white. If the print is too glaring I use the wrong side of the fabric.
I love white on whites, but I have such trouble telling the front side from the back side, that I have almost given up on them!

depends on the project---i've used plenty of muslin- i love Kona Snow-
i like white on whites- when i need a white i go shopping- touch them- look at them-- and choose the one i want for that project- varies day to day- project to project |
the way to know which is the right side of WOW is when you are sitting down at the machine and using pieces of WOW, put the WOW piece on top of your thigh and you will easily be able to tell. The right side really shows up and the wrong side is dull. Has something to do with getting it out of the light.

When I say I use Kona I mean Robt. Kaufman Kona, not the kona from Joanns. It frays a lot.
My first preference is white on white and I like to mix all different patterns. I have been gifted with a ton of white cotton broadcloth, so guess what will be the background of my scraps quilts for quite some time? My supply may even outlast me!

Kona cotton or a good grade muslin. Use a lot of pfd white fabric and buy that by the bolt. That way I have any color I need, simply dye it or paint it.

I don't use any of the whites mentioned in your replys. I like to use a better grade of cotton percale. It washes well, has more body and is usually a clear white. I also use the sale cotton percale for solids. You can buy it at W-Mart and it is less expensive than name brands.
I like Kona, but I also like a white on white pattern.
for solid white, I prefer to use Kona but usually use a white-on-white.....
Kona. I finally broke down and bought a bolt of white from the Fabric Depot in Portland. It was a good price - maybe $6 a yard, it's been a while - and free shipping. Having a bolt is really handy. I also love Kona snow.
I love this quilt I been wanting to do one like this but never could find a pattern WHAT PATTERN DID YOU USE COULD YOU LET ME KNOW
white on white for me....

When I embroidered parasol girls (machine emb) for a quilt I am working on, I chose a white on white delicate background print and I think it will add a little to it. Marysewfun |
