Where do you buy your binding?

I loathe making my own binding. I have been searching for a good place to by binding bty any ideas?

lynnegreen 11-05-2011 10:10 PM

I usually make my own, but, if I am looking for a solid color the only place really around for me is Joann's, and even though I have one of their super-stores nearby the choices are pretty limited

Quilter Lois 11-05-2011 10:17 PM

Try these - I just put premade binding in the google search.

I have only ever made my own...

Do you use straight or bias binding? I only use straight, it holds up well and is soooo much easier to make.

Just wondering why you loathe making binding? It's really not difficult although it can be a little time consuming, true, but for me that is just part of the process. I want to use the same quality materials in my binding as I put in my quilt because the binding is going to take a beating (hopefully if the quilt is used). Personally, I find that premade binding that some places sell to feel chintzy, but that's just my opinion.

QuiltingCrazie 11-06-2011 03:35 AM

I'm with you I make my own. I would avoid the the satin premade one. Too bad you don't quilt with anyone cause maybe you could trade off. If they dont like cutting you could cut a project for them and they could make your binding! I use bias binding on all mine, just the way I was taught.

carolaug 11-06-2011 03:36 AM

I was thinking the same. Its so easy to make binding. Just 2 1/2 inch strip/sew together and iron...and you do not have to iron it if yu do not want to. I have done both and they both look fine. I did buy binding once from Joanns with a 5- percent off coupon. Looked and felt fine.

ckcowl 11-06-2011 03:37 AM

what is it about making binding that you find so---loathsome?
maybe we could give you some tips that would make the process easier for you-
personally i can not imagine spending money on binding-on line- how would you know it is going to actually go with your quilt? colors can be so different- i would find it horribly distressing to order what i (thought) was going to be the right color- to recieve it and find it's the wrong shade...and it might not be made from the same quality of fabrics as i've used in my quilt-...and what about pre=shrinking the fabric? if you've pre-washed the fabrics in your quilt= then decide to not use those fabrics for your binding- and you buy your binding from somewhere- how's the quilt going to be when it gets washed and only the binding shrinks??? just my thoughts...

Check eBay ..... fairly decent prices there plus a large variety of print and color choices.

annthreecats 11-06-2011 04:54 AM

I like making my own binding. I feel its one of the best parts of the project because it's the finishing part. Making and putting binding on is fun.

Joset 11-06-2011 05:30 AM

i have only made my own. time consuming but easy.

luci4 11-06-2011 06:23 AM

I make my own to get a better selection color wise.

I should have mentioned that I do make my own. Very easy. but for those who don't like making binding eBay has a lot of choices.

Sierra 11-06-2011 06:31 AM

Beverly's is where I go. Be aware that bindings have changed a lot in recent years. I have some older ones (same old brand as the new) and they are thin!!! My dh came home with some when I asked him to pick it up for me. I've decided to keep him anyway..:)

sewwhat85 11-06-2011 06:37 AM

i dont mind any part of binding

mighty 11-06-2011 07:17 AM

Only make my own. I sure will check out all your sugesstions as binding is not my favorate thing to do.

Holice 11-06-2011 07:37 AM

it never occurs me to buy binding as it is too expensive vs making your own which matches the quilt. Per inch or yard is is very expensive. The commercial binding is not double folded so doesn't wear well.

mpspeedy 11-06-2011 08:43 AM

Interesting, I usually make my own binding and always to much. It has come in handy recently. I started making these little "pillowcase" dresses that go to tropical countries for the poorest of poor little girls. The idea is to cover them so that men will not use them for their own "low" purposes. Somehow wearing a dress makes them less likely to be molested. I quickly went through my stash of odd pillowcases and began making them from my quilting and sewing stash. They are very simple and the armholes are bound and finished off with strings to tie in a bow on the shoulders. I found that when I used a print fabric for the dress I preferred a solid color binding. I have been purchasing premade quilt binding from Joanns etc. and cutting it in half down the center. That allows me to get at least three sets of bindings for the dresses out of each package of comercial binding.
I recently started to try and purchase only items made in America. I was very disappointed when all of the binding in Joanns was clearly marked "made in China". I guess I will go back to making my own for the dresses.

wolph33 11-06-2011 08:45 AM

I only make my own-easier to sew with that bought binding

0tis 11-06-2011 08:48 AM

I think some of the fabric manufacturer's are making binding now - I just saw a tutorial and they have binding at Riley Blake designs. Sure would be a time saver.

sewsewquilter 11-06-2011 08:51 AM

Have you tried the Simplicity Bias Tape Machine. No more burning your fingers with the iron. :-) Makes making binding a joy.

Dolphyngyrl 11-06-2011 08:28 PM

make my own too, making it is the easy part, is it the sewing it down that you loathe

Just cut strips of one of the fabrics in my quilt.

Why pay someone else to cut strips for you?

I can make my own binding in the time it takes you to order yours.

EmbQuilt 11-06-2011 09:17 PM

You can also try your lqs - I have seen them at some stores. I used to purchase mine because I didn't like the process of making it. Now, I sort of use it as a soother. I ignore all around me and iron, cut, sew, iron again lol then attach to quilt then hand sew or machine sew depending on project.

missionslady 11-07-2011 12:00 AM

Although I have used purchased binding, I much prefer the kind I make. It is better quality with a wider choice of colors, and I find it is not as stiff as purchased binding. I stick to straight binding and have never had a problem. The main reason you would need bias binding is going around curves and scallops, but my quilts thus far have all had straight edges. One suggestion that helped me was purchasing a special binding ruler. It is 2 1/2" wide and 24" long (I think). That way I don't even have to spend time measuring, I just lay the ruler down and cut with rotary cutter. Very fast and easy. I believe I ordered it from Clotilde. I usually make my binding first thing, that way, it is ready when I need it. Hope that encourages you to try making your own again.

Hey, if you live near Oregon City, I'll be glad to make your binding for you! It's a part of quilting I enjoy!

teddysmom 11-07-2011 03:32 AM

Somtimes I sew strips of the material in the quilt itself to make the binding. It's always the right color and pattern, it saves me money and keeps me from having to make a decision on what to buy for the binding.

gollytwo 11-07-2011 03:45 AM

I make my own if it's to be a straight binding.
For bias binding I buy. I have about a dozen from Joann's (what I used to use my coupons on) and 5 or 6 solids from an on-line shop called, I think, Bias Bindings (bought years ago)
I realize I could do it myself, but don't want to.

abbynjack 11-07-2011 04:01 AM

I make my own binding.
I used bias binding years ago on other sewing items and found that after a few washes, sometimes it frayed.
Hopefully they make better quality bias binding than they used too.

Holice 11-07-2011 05:05 AM

If I understand the ebay description - the cut binding is 1.15 per yd. There is a chart indicating the number of yds needed for each size quilt. For a double or queen it is about 14 yds. and that is about 8 strips at 40" wide or 20 inches of fabric. If fabric is $9 per yd, then that is about 3/4 yd or $6 or so.
Now If I calculate correct. the equivalent of a yard of the cut binding is $16.56. Big difference.
Less expensive to learn to cut your own.

Pieces2 11-07-2011 05:23 AM

I always make my own binding. Using straight cuts of fabric it doesn't take that much time or fabric.
By making my own I can use the same fabric in the quilt.

jgriinke 11-07-2011 05:29 AM

I don't mind making the binding, I just don't like sewing in on by hand. I can sit and do hand applique for hours on end, but doing the hand sewing part of the binding drives me crazier than I already am. ;-)
If it is not a show quilt, I do it all by machine. I also don't do a bias binding unlesss the edges are curved.

Deborah12687 11-07-2011 06:20 AM

I have made my own binding a few times but when I am busy I buy binding from one of my faverate discontinued fabric store and I can get yardage enough to go around the entire quilt. For smaller quilting projects I just go to Walmart and once our new joannes open up I will be buying from the new store.
