I normally always spray my fabric on my ironing board. However it makes my cover as stiff as a board. I need a new place.
Where do YOU starch your fabric at?

Julie in NM 02-26-2011 07:31 AM

Outside. Just fold in half..spray. Flip and spray again. Have new hardwood floors and don't want residue on flooring. Have also srayed in the garage too.

Lori S 02-26-2011 07:33 AM

I use the concentrate , mix up a solution then put the fabric on a rack to dry. I get much more even results, by soaking or dipping.... no starch mess on the iron,or board cover. There is not always time to "pre-starch" so I do have a bit in a spray bottle , and spray on the reverse side of my cutting mat. It comes off with a damp cloth.

fabric_fancy 02-26-2011 07:36 AM

i have a retractable cloths line that spans the length of my sewing room.

DH hung it up higher so i could walk underneath it without bending.

i hang all my stuff there and spray.

BellaBoo 02-26-2011 07:47 AM

I don't mind the ironing cover getting starchy. No big deal to me. I either wash it or get a new cover. I use a big board for pressing yardage and a Steady Betty for pressing quilt blocks and pieces.

cjtinkle 02-26-2011 07:54 AM

Outside on the clothesline, or if the weather is too bad, I hang the fabric over the shower curtain and starch it there.

oatw13 02-26-2011 08:15 AM

I place a cover over the ironing board and then put the fabric on top of it. Then I spray the starch.

Thank you for asking this question. I was just going to post. I avoid starching because I do not want my ironing board sticky or the wooden floor.

Melinda in Tulsa 02-26-2011 10:42 AM

Like you, I just spray starch on my ironing board. I've never noticed any problems from it.

sueisallaboutquilts 02-26-2011 06:42 PM

I put a large towel on my kitchen table and starch and press there.

Renee110 02-26-2011 06:54 PM

My board cover doesn't really get stiff, but I use Best Press.

Lindsey 02-26-2011 06:56 PM

I use it right on the ironing board. never had any problems. It gets dirty get a new one or wash it. Just even put a new fabric right over the old.

Divokittysmom 02-26-2011 08:01 PM

I use my shape n press board covered with a pillowcase. When it's stiff I toss it in the laundry.

justwannaquilt 02-26-2011 09:42 PM

So I asked this question then went and put a new cover on my ironing board. I needed a new one anyways the cat decided he was going to climb the other one like a tree and ripped it. Anyways. I DON'T LIKE IT. LOL its not stiff and it feels "loose" or kinda fluffy. like I'm not pressing anything. So maybe the starch IS good on my ironing board cover. Thank goodness I have 12 yards of fabric to starch tomorrow. lol

Thanks everyone for your replies!

Buttons922 02-27-2011 03:40 AM

I spray on my Ironing Board and wash the cover every couple of weeks.

justlooking 02-27-2011 04:55 AM

Wow I always starched on my ironing board cover, never thought about it. Only use the board for sewing and quilting, I do not iron clothing, well maybe one or two pieces.

piepatch 02-27-2011 05:28 AM

When doing a lot of starching, I hold the piece I am starching inside a garbage bag and spray. That is to keep the starch overspray off the ironing board and hardwood floors. You will be surprised at how much starch winds up on the floor, no matter how careful you are. Sometimes, I step outside to spray starch on to my fabric or garment.

teacherbailey 02-27-2011 05:31 AM

I don't starch ever. Hate the mess too much!

catrancher 02-27-2011 05:39 AM

I cover my ironing board and lay a sheet on the floor.

nabobw 02-27-2011 05:42 AM

I went to Joann fabrics and bought 2 yards of the teflon material and put that over my ironing broad, just layed it on top, when I am sewing. Anything I spray gets sprayed on that so when I have to iron I take it off and my cover is good.

sahm4605 02-27-2011 05:42 AM

I have started soaking my fabric in a bowl with the concentrated starch that I mix up. if there is a little piece that needs to be starched i just use a small bowl or spray on the ironing board. but lately most the time i use the bowl method. it makes things go faster and less work and pain in my hands. used to spray in the bathroom but got tired of hubby complaining about the mess.

Same here. Don't have any problems with Best Press

feffertim 02-27-2011 05:57 AM

I have an old large pillow case that I lay on my ironing board when I need to spray starch, when it gets too sticky I throw in in the washer.

east side quilter 02-27-2011 06:01 AM

I starch on my ironing board but I have two covers. So when one gets stiff I change it. Soak stiff one in amonia and hot water.

I had to laugh at the floor comment. If I don't get mine mopped today someone is liable to get stuck in the middle of the sewing room! I was starching quilt back last night and I can see starch spots all over it!

Cherylsea 02-27-2011 06:10 AM

I starch mine over the bathtub.

What's a Steady Betty?

Jeanniejo 02-27-2011 07:48 AM

I startch mine o the ironing board and when it starts getting stiff I throw it in the washer.

BeckiQuilts 02-27-2011 07:57 AM

I don't use spray starch, I use the one Hancock's carries,in an atomizer bottle. That helps control where the starch goes. I also use a pillowcase over my ironing board. Easy to wash and dry, unlike a towel.

karate lady 02-27-2011 10:35 AM

where is very interesting but as a newbie, when do you spray????

darleneerickson 02-27-2011 10:41 AM

/wow Nabobw...that quilt is fantastic.........

CaroleLee 02-27-2011 01:06 PM

I put down an old sheet folded several times, does the trick.

CGail 02-27-2011 04:22 PM

I always cut out a piece of fabric about the size of the area of my ironing board where I iron the most. I do a zigzag stitch around the edgings and then pin in with small safety pins onto my ironing board. When this gets dirty, I can wash or make another one. It saves my ironing board cover - sort seems redundant, but I like doing it this way. - Cynthia

Quilting Grandma 02-27-2011 04:24 PM

I have apiece of muslin that I use when using starch. I just throw it into the washer when it gets grungy.

KS quilter 02-27-2011 05:03 PM

I starch on my ironing board, or on my ironing pad directly right
of my machine. I buy a piece of what I call 'decorator fabric"
maybe what some would call upholstery fabric. It is thicker
but no nap. I use that wherever I am going to press. I press
most all seams, so there is a lot of overspray. When it gets to
feeling stiff I just put it through the laundry and it is good to go
again. They do wear out in time but much cheaper to replace
than an ironing board cover or ironing pad.

What is a Steady Betty?

b.zang 02-27-2011 05:25 PM

I never thought about overspray until I nearly killed myself slipping on the starchy floor under where I had sprayed. My floor didn't get sticky, it got super slippery.
I use Best Press and spray carefully now.

GGinMcKinney 02-27-2011 05:30 PM

I hang fabric over the shower curtain in the bath room, spray and leave to dry over night, then iron the following day. Takes planning and self discipline, but I can do it if I make up my mind.
